November 7, 2021 Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time “For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had.” Mark 12:44 The story of the poor widow’s contribution out of her poverty, compared to those who contribute out of their abundance, is a reminder to most of us that we are greatly blessed and an en-couragement that we strive to outdo one another in generosity.

St. Mark Music Ministry—November, 2021 Take the Bread, Children

November 7th:

November 14th:

November 19th:

November 21st:

Carl Schalck, the composer of “Take the Bread, Children,” which will be sung on November 7th at 10:00 AM, passed away earlier in 2021. Dr. Schalck was a professor of music at Concordia University in River Forest Illinois. “Take the Bread, Children” is an anthem for choir and organ featuring a beautiful a capella second verse as well as a soaring descant for the final two verses. The Recessional Hymn on November 7th, number 666 - Go Make of All Disciples is a beautiful hymn urging us to accept our calling as disciples of the Lord. The cheerful tune comes from a late 18th century German source, but has been widely adopted by English language hymnals. The bell choir will join with the choir at the 10:00 AM Mass.

The choir will sing “Steal Away” arranged by Howard Helvey at the 10:00 am Mass. This traditional African American spiritual was commissioned at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson City, Missouri. This spiritual is written with hidden code and double mean-ing - both expressing faith in God, and communicating for slaves to run away on their own or with the Underground Railroad, singing, “Steal away, Steal away, steal away to Jesus.” This song was popularized by the Jubilee Singers, a professional African American choir from the late 19th century.

Recently, our organ at St. Mark has been replaced by a new, Rodgers Infinity Series 361 console. Due to a mechanical failure, the old instrument was beyond repair. Luckily, we’ve been able to replace the instrument with a top of the line digital organ. Join us on Friday, November 19th at 7:00 pm for a dedication of the new instrument. Dr. Jacob Hofeling, on the organ, will be joined by Abigail Green, trumpet, and Matthew Baumler, piano. Music will feature fantastic music from composers such as J.S. Bach, Aaron Copland, Ralph Vaughan-Williams and many others! A reception will be held following the concert to visit with performers.

The choir, and bell choir will be joining forces for the powerful and joyful, “Rejoice the Lord is King.” This hymn, written by John Darwall in 1773, was set to the text of the 148th psalm. This setting by Joel Raney features both choir, bell choir, organ, and piano ac-companiments. The piano will be played by Sharee Thompson, local organist and pianist. Sharee will also share her talents with accom-panying the hymns and mass setting. Sharee and Jacob will join forces for the prelude, “For the Beauty of the Earth,” arranged by John Innes for piano and organ. This classic Thanksgiving hymn expresses gratitude for the wondrous creations of the Lord.

November 28th:

The first Sunday of advent reminds us of the coming of the Savior, and our current expectation of his triumphal return. As we enter into the season of Advent, we think about what we are doing to prepare our hearts for His return. The choir will share a beautiful setting of “Advent Hope” by Joseph M. Martin, that asks, “When will Messiah come? When will You wipe our tears away? When will our sorrow turn to joy?” This mournful anthem is a setting of the familiar tune, Coventry Carol, an English tune written in the 1590s. The piece, largely composed in the minor mode, ends with an unusually hopeful G major chord, signifying our optimistic hope and assurance that the Lord will wipe all the tears from our eyes.
