Prayer to St. michael the Archangel St. michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. may God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, o Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust

into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Merry Christmas, Everyone!

the annual St. Cecilia Christmas Day dinner will be noon until 2 Pm on tuesday, Dec. 25, in the school cafeteria. the dinner is free of charge and open to all. We would love to see you there.

one of our greatest needs each year is for individuals to donate their time and talent to this cause. Whatever help you can give will be greatly appreciated. We need hams and funds to put on this meal. monetary donations can be dropped in the collection basket marked “Christmas Dinner” or mailed to the St. Cecilia rectory. For any of the numer-ous volunteer opportunities available, please call Julie at 478-3575. We will need people to cut the hams and prepare the fixings (especially this Sunday, Dec. 23, the day hams are requested to be dropped off), set up the cafeteria, serve, wash dishes, prepare carry-out, engage in hospitality, deliver meals and help with clean-up. With your help we can bring the spirit of Christmas to our community and show them the love of Jesus.

in an effort to address the SafEty anD SECurity concerns at each church, a Safety Committee is being formed to examine them. each church will have its own committee who will meet to form a comprehensive plan and then help to communicate that plan to the congregation. this will be an ad hoc committee with a limited scope that will meet in January and February of 2019. those with experience in Police/fire/EMt, mental health counseling, and emergency planning are encouraged to contact Matt Springer at [email protected] for more information.

the season of Advent has now concluded, and we turn to the Christ mass wherein we celebrate an event for which people waited over 4,000 years. the event that we remember every year because it is so profound and one that changed the world forever. that Christ, our Savior, who is God himself, came into the world. the birth of our Savior brings joy to the world. let us commit to worshipping our lord with zeal this day and season knowing that we have God to guide us in our lives.

on this day, we celebrate more than the historical event that God brought himself down to this earth in Jesus, the messiah. We also celebrate what that means for all of humanity now that the waiting is over and Jesus Christ is born. With the birth of the messiah, there is now hope. the hope that people longed to have in their lives. A hope that gives their lives purpose and fulfill-ment. A hope that gives all the grace, God’s power, to not be defeated in any event in life or in any sin perpetrated on us or to which we have succumbed. there is now a loving God that loves and cares for us all and is always there to bring victory and resur-rection within any defeat in our lives, especially death.

What a loving God we have, and that is worth celebrating. Amen? Amen!

Curious about the Church? Want to learn more? Call us today at 513-871-5757, ext. 215.

We began another season of Catholicism 101: the rCia Ex-perience in September, for which an overwhelming 38 people registered. this is the third year in a row that attendance at rCiA has been overwhelmingly outstanding! Because of the large number of those interested in becoming Catholic, we have completely revised the rCiA program for our region. new aspects this year include a comprehensive parish sponsor for-mation program, new rCiA team members with new responsi-bilities, and a brand new curriculum created and published in house by our resident theologians and catechists. in addition to all of these positive revisions, we have also started a weekly column in the bulletin titled This Week at RCIA. the purpose of this column is to get our parishioners more involved in the faith journey of our candidates and catechumens.

our Parish religious Education Program (PrEP) started the 2018-19 school year on September 23. PreP has two sections: St. Cecilia PreP meets on Sunday mornings from 8:30 Am-9:45 Am, and St. Anthony/St. margaret-St. John PreP meets on Sunday mornings from 9:45 Am-10:45 Am. Both PrePs have 4 sections: kindergarten-1st Grade, 2nd-3rd Grade, 4th-6th Grade, and 7th-8th Grade. We have been covering multiple topics, such as the holy trinity, cre-ation and the fall, the sacraments, the Church, and prayer. it is in this program that our 2nd Graders prepare for first holy Communion and first reconciliation. to register for this wonderful program, please visit our parish websites and under our Faith Formation tab, click PreP. From there, simply fill out the online form at the bottom of the page.

We will also be celebrating the sacrament of Confirma-tion for our 7th/8th graders this year. Confirmation Prep-aration is a joint effort where all of our programs in the re-gion prepare for the sacrament together (St. Cecilia School, PrePs, and home Study). our teens and their sponsors have been meeting since october once a month on the 1st Sunday of every month at 7 Pm to prepare for this great sacrament. to learn more about the Confirmation preparation process, please visit our parish websites.

We were very excited to welcome Fr. tony Stephens & msgr. Frank lane to preach our advent Mission on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3. the theme of the parish mission was Christ Our God: Truth Incarnate. Fr. tony & msgr. lane discussed themes such as God making the first move in our conversion as well as the capacity for man to know God. We also had an opportunity for confession on the second evening. Fr. tony & msgr. lane effortlessly presented on these most impor-tant topics, while including comedy that made for a fruitful mission full of joy and laughter.

We are excited to announce that our region has renewed our subscription to a dynamic new online platform called fOrMED. every parishioner will have 24/7 access to the best Catholic content on any device, including your computer, smartphone and tablet with internet access. From Fr. michael e. Gaitley, miC, author of the bestselling book Consoling the Heart of Jesus, comes an extraordinary 33-day journey to marian consecration. Featuring the teachings of four giants of marian spirituality—St. louis de montfort, St. maximilian kolbe, St. teresa of Calcutta, and Pope St. John Paul ii—Fr. Gaitley shows how simple it is to put marian devotion into practice.

People’s lives today are of-ten busy and challenging. Stage 1 of the hearts Afire parish-based program offers individuals a quick and easy way to withdraw from the demands of daily life and enter into a peaceful interior reflec-tion on their relationship with Christ in the context of marian devotion. We begin with the immacu-late heart because mary leads us to the Sacred heart of Jesus. the end result is that, by learning

to entrust ourselves to the mother of our lord, we can discover a transforming trust in Jesus himself.

Capital improvements at St. Ceciliathe Restoring All Things in Christ Capital Campaign raised in excess of $1.6 million several years ago. this allowed the parish to restore many of the deteriorating parts of the church. major projects included the cleaning and tuck pointing of the limestone stone façade, restoring the stained glass windows and adding new protective coverings, restoration of the narthex and painting the church interior, updating the sound system, adding security alarms and new air conditioning. new doors were installed at the side entrances, and the front doors were restored to their original beauty. A new accessible entrance into church from the rear parking lot was added through the St. Joseph Garden.

All of these projects were completed as monies became available. We are blessed by so many generous people at St. Cecilia in life and in death, who continue to contribute to the restoration Fund through new gifts and bequests. these additional gifts have allowed us to pursue the sanctuary restoration and updating the restrooms in the undercroft, both of which are in process. Part of the original campaign plan was to create this restoration Fund to take care of ongoing capital needs. the Finance Committee’s policy is to invest any bequest in the restoration Fund. Additional gifts can be made to the fund at any time. Please speak with Bob kellison, Director of music & Stewardship.

in addition, the 100th Anniversary School Capital Campaign is also accepting gifts to fund restoration projects needed in the school. to date, the primary wing classrooms have been updated as well as the St. Cecilia Commons, three of the nine classrooms, and the restrooms in the original building. Pending projects needing to be funded include primary wing bathrooms, air conditioning for the entire school and the remaining six classrooms. to put the expense in perspective, a classroom renovation costs approximately $65k, which includes asbestos abatement, new flooring, ceiling, windows, lighting and furniture. Air condi-tioning the entire school is estimated to cost a minimum of $250,000. the completion of these projects are important to maintain the vitality of our parish school.

restoration fund Savings account: $319,072 | 100th anniversary School Campaign Savings account $78,165

the Finance Committee has also successfully moved the use of festival proceeds out of the operating budget over the past five years, reducing the amount now to where 100% of the festival profits are used for specific capital improvements. examples of the past several years’ use of festival proceeds include the restoration of the church bells and the St. Cecilia organ.

the St. Cecilia share (20%) of the pledges to the Archdiocesan One Faith, One Hope, One Love capital campaign is estimated to be $175,000. these monies are earmarked for the St. Cecilia Commons air conditioning and accessible entry. to date the air conditioning is completed, and plans are in process to provide a simple ground floor entry into the Commons.

making A Commitment “How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me?” - Ps. 116:12

it’s about PrayEr. As stewards, we set aside time each day to pray — time to listen to God and hear exactly what it is that the lord calls each of us to do, whether it be in individual prayer or prayer with others, as a family or as a parish community.

it’s about MiniStry. As stewards, we nurture all we have been given so that it yields its increase. God has given us so many abilities and talents. together, by giving freely of our time and talent, we can make our world, our parish, our community, our home a wonderful showcase of God’s love.

it’s about finanCE. As good stewards, we thank God by returning a portion of his gifts through our financial giving. only we know how much God has given us. only we know how grateful we are. only we know how much we can give responsibly. But God does repeatedly ask us to give from our abundance — to give of our first fruits.

it’s about COMMitMEnt. At the end of time, we will only have the things we gave away. everything we kept, we will no longer be able to keep. our lives are a process of giving and sharing. At the end of time, we will be happy about everything we ever gave away and be rewarded as good and faithful stewards.

AVe MARIAhail Mary, full of grace, the lord is with you.Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.holy Mary, Mother of god, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

MeMORAReremember o most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.inspired with this confidence we fly unto you, o Virgin of virgins, our Mother.to you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful,o Mother of the word incarnate.Despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer them.

MAGNIFICATMy soul magnifies the lordand my spirit rejoices in god my savior;because he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid;for behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;because he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.his mercy is from generation to generationon those who fear him.he has shown might with his arm.he has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly.he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.he has given help to israel, his servant, mindful of his mercy even as he spoke to our fathers, to abraham and to his posterity forever.

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord …” –Psalm 98

Silent NightPerhaps the best known Christmas carol is Silent Night, writ-ten in 1818 by an Austrian assistant priest Joseph mohr and the church organist Franz Gruber. Whether it was because the church organ was broken or because Fr. mohr just loved the guitar, the congregation listened as the choir sang Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht to the accompaniment of Fr. mohr’s guitar for the very first time at that midnight mass in St. nicholas Church in Austria. today, Silent Night is sung in more than 180 languages by millions of people and is the most recorded song.

O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles)this carol is attributed to John Francis Wade, a Catholic lay-man and a music teacher residing in France, where he made his living copying and selling music and by giving music les-sons to children. he combined the latin text with a bit of mu-sic and published the resulting hymn in his own 1751 publica-tion of Cantus Diversi. But the song’s popularity dates from a performance of Adeste Fideles at the Portuguese embassy Chapel in london, which so impressed the Duke of leeds that he had it arranged for choir and ensemble for his Christmas celebration in 1795. A century later, Frederick oakley, an An-glican minister who converted to Catholicism, felt that if Catholic congregations had good literary texts to sing, they would sing well. he translated the latin Adeste Fidelis into the english version, O Come, All Ye Faithful. this carol is among the most recognizable Christmas tunes in existence.

Joy to the Worldisaac Watts — Father of english hymnody — is credited with the words to this carol based on Psalm 98. A hundred years later, American composer and music educator lowell mason embarked on the task of producing a hymnal whose tunes would be drawn from the work of european classical compos-ers such as haydn and mozart. Published in 1822 by the handel and haydn Society of Boston, mason’s hymnal turned out to be a great success. Although Joy to the World is often attributed to handel, handel did not compose the carol. one might say that mason was more “inspired” and “borrowed” a few musical ideas from handel’s Messiah; however, nowhere in the Messiah will you find the entire musical composition of Joy to the World.

From the earliest of times, we have been encouraged to sing…sing to God. no other season of the church year brings out the singer in all of us as does christmas. it was st. Francis of assisi who introduced the christmas carol (along with the nativity crèche), and from italy christmas carols quickly spread to Germany, France, spain and england.
