Every threatening situation feeds mistrust and leads people to withdraw into their own safety zone. Mistrust and fear weaken relationships and increase the risk of violence, creating a vicious circle that can never lead to a relationship of peace. Even nuclear deterrence can only produce the illusion of security. We cannot claim to maintain stability in the world through the fear of annihilation, in a volatile situation, suspended on the brink of a nuclear abyss and enclosed behind walls of indiffer-ence. As a result, social and economic decisions are being made that lead to tragic situations where human beings and creation itself are discarded rather than protected and pre-served. How, then, do we undertake a journey of peace and mutual respect? How do we break the unhealthy mentality of threats and fear? How do we break the current dynamic of distrust? We need to pursue a genuine fraternity based on our common origin from God and exercised in dialogue and mutual trust. The desire for peace lies deep within the human heart, and we should not resign ourselves to seeking anything less than this.

2020 World Peace Day Message, Pope Francis

Called to pursue a genuine fraternity based on our

common origin from God.

We believe we are called to break down the walls that divide us—accepting, affirming, and accompanying each other, even those with whom we disagree. We seek unity, not uniformity.

This year’s Christmas Food Basket project was a big suc-cess thanks to the generosity and hard work of our parish-ioners. A total of 59 food baskets (each fed a family of six ) were donated along with $640 in food gift cards.

Social service agencies picked up the food baskets and delivered them to clients. From left to right: Bridge Communi-ties, Catholic Charities, Mutual Ground, Daybreak Transitional Housing and 360 Youth Services. Other agencies helped by our food baskets include: Midwest Shelter for Homeless Vets, Family Shelter Services, Hesed House, and our parish refugee support group.

God’s Word To Us

Reflection on Lectionary Readings 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jan. 19, 2020

Do YOU Know Him?

AMAZING! John the Baptist, a relative of Jesus, didn’t KNOW him! Kind of hard to believe, don’t you think? Well, at least he came to know the true identity of Jesus. What about us? When we KNOW someone, it really can be hard to recognize them for who they really are! We have in our minds, and frequently in our hearts, all we think we need to know about them, because WE KNOW THEM. But in reality, this is a special kind of blindness, and if lethargy keeps us from looking closer, deeper, and more holistically; a person can become invisible in plain sight. Do we see the light of God shining through those we know, those we don’t know; the child or parent or sibling who is next to us always - the stranger we see every day on the street - the suffering face we glance at and move on? John was not the expected herald of God’s coming presence. Paul was not the one expected to bring the message of salvation to the gentiles. Jesus was not the expected messiah who would restore the independence of Judea and Israel. And yet, like Isaiah, each was a light to the nations of God’s love, God’s presence, God’s compassion and inclusion. So, what about us; as individuals, as Church, as community? Do we let God’s light shine - gifted to us through Baptism, through Eucharist, through all the sacraments? We are called, individually and communally, to be light to the whole world, to the nations. Like Isaiah, like John, like Paul, we have been enlightened by the Holy Spirit and through our relationship with Christ, to be instruments of God’s compassion, love and mercy to everyone we meet, and in all the events of our lives. With the help of the Holy Spirit, following and relying on Christ, let us recognize and respond to the light of God in expected and unexpected people and events, and let us be lights of hope and love, pushing back the darkness of our world. That is what it means to be Christian; that is what it means to be Church!

EVERY 40 SECONDS, SOMEONE IN THE U.S. IS HAVING A STROKE!

Stroke Scan Plus will be at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church on Saturday,

February 8, 2020 to provide life-saving, wellness ultrasound screenings. It is important to perform preventive maintenance for ourselves yearly. Do you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease, stroke, abdominal aneurysm or internal cancers? If so, do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possibly serious disease. These screenings are typically NOT performed at your annual check-up, and insurance companies may not pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Diagnostic versions of these screenings cost thousands of dollars in a hospital. Stroke Scan Plus will be offering them to you for $159 for all 7 combined ultrasound screenings (Stroke, AAA, AFIB & organs). Insurance is NOT necessary and appointments are limited. Stroke Scan will be available at the church for you to register on January 25 & 26, 2020 or please call 832-437-7355 or toll free 1-866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today for you or a loved one. The screenings will take place in/at the Rooms 4 & 5. Prevention is your key to quality health! www.strokescan.com.

This week marks the 47th anniversary of the Roe v Wade

Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in our country. Following are facts concerning abortion are taken from “Roe Reality Check,” a publication of the Secretariat for Pro-life Activities, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Abortion is legal throughout all 9 month of pregnancy.

About 95% of abortions are “elective”-not done for health reasons.

In the United States the abortion rate is among the highest of all developed countries.

Nearly half of all abortions are performed on women who have already had at least one abortion.

A fetal heart begins to beat about 22 days after conception; 77% of abortions are done after this point.

Roe v Wade has been cited in other “life issues” including “right to die” and “right to assisted suicide”.

Since abortion was legalized, 61,000,000 unborn babies have died from abortion.

St. Margaret Mary Parish, Naperville, IL Pastoral Council Minutes Summary for December 3, 2019 By Terry Wagner, Pastoral Council Secretary

Page 11: St. Margaret Mary Parish · St. Margaret Mary Parish January 19, 2020 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 1450 Green Trails Dr. Naperville, IL 60540 630-369-0777 Masses: Saturday: 5:00

Fr. Paul’s Homily

Gift of Spirit to All Humanity Is 42:1-4, 6-7; Acts 10:34-38; Mt 3:13-17

(Every moment, is pregnant with two possibilities: one wonderful, divine, full of grace, and the other hellish.)

11

“Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.”

This is from Peter’s homily in the house of Cornelius in the Acts of the Apostles. The theme of today’s liturgy is a continuation of last week, the Epiphany. The term “epiphany” refers both to the appearance of the star, the light, and the descent of the Spirit upon Jesus in his baptism. And so the theme is the universal invitation of God to all creation.

This is a reminder for the Church that the mission of Christ is to bring redemption to the whole of humanity. Last week the non-Jews were represented by the magi. Even Jesus was tempted to limit the scope of his mission to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. It’s natural enough to limit one’s scope to one’s own kind, but as he learned, this is wrong, it cannot be. The will of God is to enlighten all people, to embrace all people, to bring all people into eternal communion.

Of course, and this is the problem, many people are blithely ignorant of this universal love of God for everyone. They are willing to accept God’s love for them, but not necessarily others. What is worse is that many professed Christians are also blithely ignorant of what God is doing right now in our world, and have turned the saving mission of Christ into an in-house project. That means

they imagine salvation is for those who join their group, whatever group that is. This is a serious problem. It means that the various forms of the Christian religion have become rivals, not enriching each other or cooperating together in spreading the light, but opposing each other and pretending that the light abides only with them.

Clearly, Peter’s speech in the Acts of the Apostles indicates a very different belief. I will reread it. “Rather, in every nation whoever fears God and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.” The gospel therefore is for all people. Salvation is for all people. God is for all people. Our work of evangelizing is sharing this good news and thus spreading hope and joy in a world that is truly gloomy and dark, despairing and ignorant.

Speaking of this event, the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, St. Cyril of Alexandria says, “He,” meaning Jesus, “receives it,” meaning the Holy Spirit, “to renew our nature in its entirety and to make it whole again, for in becoming human he took our entire nature to himself.” So the gift of the Spirit at Jesus’ baptism included at that time all of humanity. The gift of the Spirit at Pentecost is subsequent to this. The work of the Spirit in the sacramental life of the Church is subsequent to this. This is the primary first and total gift of the Spirit to the human race and includes all time, meaning before

and after Christ, since God does not limit himself to time, in fact God does not dwell in time. The gifts of the magi: gold, frankincense, and myrrh, however precious, are actually pitiful when contrasted to the gift of God himself given to us.

This gift is constantly offered to us as food in the Holy Eucharist, expressly to give us strength to support God’s work in renewing the world. That means to give us also joy. That means also to give us enthusiasm. That means also to give us zeal in spreading what is good because we have been so blessed. The Church’s Eucharistic Prayer expresses just such a universal mission. In the III Eucharistic Prayer it says, “May this sacrifice of our reconciliation advance the peace and salvation of all the world.” And God will never be finished until that is accomplished. Every time we come together we need to be reminded of how great and generous God is, and how great the gift God has given us, and how needed it is by our fellow citizens on this planet. God’s work and God’s will is, after all, inexorable and therefore must at some point reach fulfillment. This is a cause for hope, but it is not a cause for complacency, because every day, in fact every moment, is pregnant with two possibilities: one wonderful, divine, full of grace, and the other hellish. And we all have a part in choosing which of these possibilities actually play out in life.
