We are all called to holiness and to be saints. This Respect Life Month, we are re-membering five saints who were fed by pray-er, heard the call, and answered it to be-come missionary disciples. They built the king-dom of God in their midst. Each in their own way, they promoted and respected LIFE. This year, the four weeks of October, Respect Life Month, are inspired by them. THIS WEEK IN SMM HISTORY October 9, 1975—The newly formed Charisma c Prayer group began mee ng weekly, in the church sacristy, each Thursday evening at 8pm. October 10, 1965—The Women’s Society published “A Guide for Guilds” , including a sec on on church cleaning. The sec on included the following rules: 1. No smoking in the church or flower room; 2. A scarf, hat or head covering must be worn at all mes while cleaning the church; 3. No slacks or pedalpushers are to be worn, women are to wear dresses only. October 11, 1962– A Mass was offered in church at 1:00am for all parishioners to pray for the success of the Va can Ecumenical Council, beginning at the same hour in Va can City. October 14, 2012—A Mass honoring the Feast of St. Margaret Mary and the culmina on of the parish 75th Jubilee Year was celebrated by Cardinal Roger Mahony, and a ended by former pastors and associ-ates. During the Jubilee year, the parish set a goal of comple ng 75,000 volunteer hours. At the end of the year over 92,000 volunteer hours had been com-pleted.

LA VIÑA DEL SEÑOR Por Humberto Beltrán

El evangelio de hoy nos trae una enseñanza de gran actualidad. La parábola que nos dice hoy Jesús podría llenar la primera página de los dia-rios y llevaría muchos meses de investigación en la televisión. La parábola habla de unos emplea-dos corrompidos que no cumplieron su deber. Esta es una parábola actual porque nos vemos engañados por otros.

Malos viñadores.

El evangelio narra la parábola de la viña que no produjo fruto por culpa de los viñadores. En el Antiguo Testamento Israel fue la viña es-cogida, plantada personalmente por Dios que por culpa de sus malos dirigentes no dio los fru-tos que Dios esperaba; al contrario, Israel dio muerte a los profetas y hasta al Hijo de Dios. Pero esta parábola no trataba simplemente de contarnos socialmente la historia religiosa de Israel. Es también una llamada de Dios para no-sotros los cristianos de todo tiempo.

La parábola fue inicialmente una acusa-ción contra los fariseos. Ellos eran los jefes del pueblo. Habían recibido de Dios la misión de servir y orientar al pueblo, pero empleaban su posición para sacar ventaja personal. Jesús los desenmascara y rechaza. Ellos saben que la pa-rábola está dirigida a ellos; que el hijo asesinado de la parábola es el mismo que les esta hablan-do. Por eso se indignan contra él. El Reino de Dios les será arrebatado de las manos y entrega-do a otros que tengan honestidad. Los oyentes comprendieron que Jesús venía a inaugurar una nueva era cuyo fundamento iba a ser la verdad y la honestidad.

Desde que vino Jesús, la iglesia es la nue-

va viña del Señor. No necesitamos pensar sola-mente en la iglesia Católica universal, en térmi-nos generales. Debemos pensar en nuestra co-munidad local que también es una viña del Se-ñor. ¿Qué frutos produce? ¿Qué desafíos y oportunidades te ofrece? ¿Qué clase de dirigen-te tiene? ¿Cómo se coopera con los ministros de Dios y sus enseñanzas, especialmente cuando no nos gusta? ¿Qué se busca en la asistencia a la iglesia cada domingo? ¿Se busca una paz y tran-quilidad superficial—que no nos pidan cuen-tas— o más bien un desafío a producir frutos en Cristo? Los frutos deben ser amor, fraternidad,

y perdón, —la nueva justicia cristiana—que de-ben brillar en la vida religiosa del Nuevo Israel.

La sociedad cristiana es también una vi-ña, aunque a veces produzca frutos de odios, guerras, egoísmos, indiferencias, discrimina-ción, abortos, abandono de los necesitados, etc. ¿Qué diría hoy Jesús sobre nuestra sociedad que se dice cristiana y que piensa tanto en vio-lencia y guerra?

Cada uno de nosotros somos también una viña del Señor: desde pequeños nos cuidó y mimó en la familia, nos dio talentos, la educa-ción que recibimos. Ahora el Señor espera fru-tos de nosotros. Jesús se comparó a una viña, a la vid, de la cual somos sarmientos; solamente en y con Cristo podemos ser la viña que Dios desea, imitando su ejemplo de vida y obediencia su palabra. Cada uno de nosotros es una viña y tenemos nuestros sarmientos que deben recibir vida de nosotros para poder producir frutos. Los padre tiene sus sarmientos en sus hijos, los dirigentes en sus empleados, los maestros en sus alumnos, los amigos en sus compañeros.

El Señor ha hecho mucho por nosotros, por su viña, y espera uvas productivas; que nos preocupemos un poco más de los hermanos po-bres, abandonados y enfermos; especialmente cuando sufren tragedias de inundaciones y te-rremotos; que no nos aprovechemos de los de-más.

Reflexión

En esta celebración, Cristo está presente en medio de nosotros. El es el hombre perfecto, en quien no hubo pecado ni falsedad. Que su ejemplo nos estimule a buscar la verdad en nuestras vidas y nos dé el valor cristiano de tra-bajar por una sociedad nueva donde haya ver-dad y honestidad. Animémonos a mejorar nues-tra vida y conducta con Dios y con el prójimo, para que Dios no nos abandone y vuelva a elegir nuevos viñadores para su viña, si no ve en noso-tros frutos buenos. ¡Que Dios nos ayude!

ADORACION EUCARISTICA

Además de nuestra Adoración Nocturna el primer viernes de cada mes, ahora tendremos exposición del Santísimo Sacramento durante el día en la iglesia. Comenzará después de la Misa de las 8:15am y continua-rá hasta las 6:45pm. justo antes de la Misa del Primer viernes, a las 7:00pm, tendremos la Bendición con El Santísimo. La Adoración nocturna continuará en la Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento a las 8:00pm.

Las pruebas que la sociedad

La tentación de dejar de lado la propia fe está siempre presente y la conversión se convierte en una respuesta a Dios que debe ser confirmada varias veces a lo largo de la vida ". - El Papa Bene-dicto XVI. Todos los adultos que son voluntarios en la parroquia están obligados a tomar una clase de Virtus llamada Protección de los hijos de Dios. Esta es una clase de tres horas que se ofrece en la parroquia y es muy in-formativo. Si usted es voluntario en la parroquia y aún no ha tomado la clase o ha tomado la clase hace más de cuatro años, tendrá que tomar la clase. The morning Bible Study Group meets eve-ry Thursday (except for holidays and vaca-tions) from 10-11:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Center. The Group, which is led by Fr. John, is continuing its study of St. Paul’s Let-ter to the Ephesians (chapters 5 and 6). All are welcome to join, even if you have missed previous meetings or have never studied the Bible before. Please bring a Bi-ble, or purchase a Bible for $10 at the first session that you attend. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. John at the parish office.

FR. JOHN’S BIBLE STUDY GROUP

Many contemporary Christians believe Je-sus was the Messiah, but they don’t neces-sarily know why they believe he was the Messiah, much less why his first followers thought he was the long-awaited king of Israel. There are dozens of passages in the Old Testament that are interpreted as pointing to Jesus as the Messiah, but, when we turn to the Gospels, we find Jesus re-peatedly referring to himself and his mis-sion in terms of several prophecies from the book of Daniel. Challenge yourself to try to understand ancient Scripture from the perspective of Jesus! The evening Bible Study group will begin again soon (starting date, day, and time will be determined later).
