Working closely with our parish council we decided not to wait until we were robbed, but instead to be proactive. We met with a member of the Sterling Heights Police Department who gave us many recommendations. These included our extensive camera system which monitors most of the grounds and the insides of both the church and the Currier Center. These pre- cautions have so far been very successful in protecting our property. The time has now come to be proactive again. Under the leadership of our parish council, we must now take precautionary actions to enhance personal security. The parish council, tech ministry and staff members attended a powerful workshop given by the Sterling Heights Police Department on church and school security. Our religious education director, tech director, business manager, and I have since met with an officer of the Sterling Heights Police Department. We walked through the buildings and grounds and he gave us recommenda- tions for enhancing personal security both at weekend masses and during religious education. Some of these rec- ommendations involve changes to our doors in the Currier Center, enhancing our camera system to include the youth center and better coverage of the grounds, and having action plans in place and practiced regularly. The parish council has approved those changes. Another recommendation involves all of us as parishioners and responsible citizens. The Sterling Heights Police Department recommends a security ministry. This ministry involves having two volunteers at every week- end mass and major services whose mission is to observe those coming and going plus take appropriate action when necessary. We will need one person in the gathering space and another in the church proper. They will be responsible for making 911 calls and responding to any serious situations. These volunteers will be trained by the Sterling Heights Police. Mr. Tom Torrento, the head of our ushers, has agreed to chair this ministry. We will also be requiring security ministry volunteers throughout the school year in the Currier Center during religious educa- tion. This ministry is a proactive response to the evergrowing security issues in our society. The parish council and I do not want to wait until an incident happens and then respond. Like our proactive response to the burglaries a few years ago, we want to be proactive in our personal security. Mr. Torrento will be in the gathering space after at all masses the weekend of May 5 th and 6 th to sign up volunteers. If you are interested in signing up or would like more information please stop by and speak to him. Thank you, Fr. Joe Gembala

Are you ready for a trim? In today's Gospel, we hear the familiar teaching of the vine and the branches. Jesus reminds us that if we remain close to himliving in humility, following God's law, loving our neighborwe will notice a positive change in our life and the lives of those around us. "Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit." The Holy Spirit is lifegiving. He is fruitful. The Spirit of God won't refuse grace to a heart that is open. As we progress through life, learning how to live and love, we grow. Our personalities flower. We discover what it is to be a blessing to others. We also experience lack, loss, and the results of our failures. We know what it is like to "wither" at times, particularly the times when we willingly separate ourselves from Jesus. "Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me." For most of us, this experience of being disconnected and off track generates a desire to return to what is right and good, to return to the vine. But this Gospel is more than "Are you in or are you out?" Even when we remain in God, when we follow Jesus, we are not exempt from the challenge, the pruning. "Everyone that [bears fruit] he prunes." A prudent trim is necessary in the natural world of trees and vines. Dead wood, broken shoots, and diseased branches need to be cut back in order for the plant to bear fruit. Jesus wants us to be healthy! He says as much himself: "By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples." Take a look at your life today. Where are you bearing fruit? Where do you need to be pruned?

Secular Order of Discalced CarmelitesAn Invitation to Join Us!

Do you feel that you would lie to strengthen your spiritual life? The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites may provide just what you are seeking. We are a community of practicing Roman Catholics, both men and women, married and single, (as well as priests and deacons) who desire a more intimate relationship with God. We pray the Liturgy of the Hours, wear the brown scapular of Our Lady, spend time in mental prayer, and study the spiritual works of the Carmelite Saints. The spiritual bene-fits are very rewarding!

We meet the fourth Sunday of each month at St. Hubert’s in Harrison Township, “Come and See!”

The doll booth has been a part of the festival for over 30 years and a corner stone in many of our childhoods. In order to continue this for the generations to come, we need your help. We still have 300 hundred dolls in need of the beautiful clothes you craft. If you can help us or know someone who can, call Karen at 5862165531 or email us at [email protected].

This a great opportunity for all ages and we have crochet and sewing patterns available. We are also looking for sponsors to help us cover costs of the dolls.

St. Malachy Blood Drive Information

Increase your intake of High Iron FoodsInformation on ways to get iron into your diet. The USDA dietary allowance for iron varies with age & sex. It is a good idea to read the Nutrition Facts Label of all of the food you eat & calculate how much iron is in your diet.

Foods that are good to eat to increase the amount of iron in your diet are listed below.

Liver, beef, pork, poultry, & fish are all excellent sources of die-tary iron. Shellfish, such as shrimp, clams, mussels & oysters are also good sources of iron.

If you do not eat meat or fish, other foods with high iron content include: iron fortified cereals, beans or legumes, especially kid-ney beans, pinto beans & chickpeas. Vegetables such as peas, spinach & lentils. Fruits, especially apricots & raisins. Enriched whole grain breads & molasses.

Absorption of iron from any of the sources above can be im-proved by eating vitamin C rich foods at the same meal. Vitamin C rich foods include orange juice, grapefruit, cantaloupe, green peppers & tomatoes.

In you do not eat meat, fish or poultry, avoid drinking tea with meals. Tea contains tannins which will decrease the absorption of iron. Legumes (peas or beans for example) also contain com-pounds that decrease the absorption of iron. Vegetarians should eat these foods with a source of Vitamin C.

Tips for a Good Blood DonationExperience

Before Donating: Get a good nights sleep Have a good breakfast or lunch Drink extra water & fluids to replace the volume you

will donate Eat iron rich foodsred meats, fish, poultry or liver,

beans , iron fortified cereals, raisins & prunes. Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries or ice

cream before donating. Tests for infections done on all donated blood can be affected by fatty materialslipidsthat appear in your blood for several hours after eating fatty foods. When this occurs & required testing cannot be performed, the blood may need to be discard-ed.

During Donation: Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the

elbow

Show the staff any “good veins” that have been used successfully in the past to draw blood

Relax Take the time to enjoy a snack & a drink in the refresh-

ments area immediately after donating.

After Donation: Rehydrate by drinking plenty of fluids over the next 2448 hours Avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for

about 5 hours after donation

Enjoy the good feeling that comes with knowing that you may have saved as many as three lives.
