Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time-10 June 2018

Growing in FaithTM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Spring Cleaning for the Soul ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When a home is closed up during a long, stuffy winter, Spring is a time to open it up, air it out, and give it a brisk, thorough cleaning. The last few weeks of Spring offer us the opportunity for a brisk, thorough cleansing of our souls, too.

Let in the sunlight. Raise the shades and illuminate the dark and dusty places of your life to reveal whatever is keeping you from a close relationship with God. Is accumulating money or possessions your top priority? Are you trying harder to impress others than working to please God? Do bad habits (excessive food, alcohol, drugs) dominate your life? Make an honest spiritual assessment and get busy cleaning.

Clear out cluttered closets. Is there something stuck in the corners of your conscience that needs to be cleaned out and thrown away so you can put God first in your life? Do you harbor unconfessed sin, an old grudge or unresolved disagreements? Seek forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (Confession), perform your penance, make amends, and let it go.

Freshen up. What spiritual change have you been meaning to make? Do you need to make weekly Mass more of a priority? Does your prayer life need refreshing? Have you wanted to learn more about your faith? Now is the time!

St. Anthony of Padua June 13

Patron of lost items, the poor, & travelers

"St. Anthony, St. Anthony, come around! Something's lost that must be found!"

Did you learn this rhyme in childhood? St. Anthony of Padua is more than the patron saint for lost items. By his life, he shows a special interest in lost souls. St. Anthony was born to noble parents, but he preferred a simple life of faith to the riches of his childhood. He joined the Franciscan order in 1220. He quickly became known for his eloquence in preaching. He had a way of reaching all sorts, from nobles to clergy, to those who had fallen away from the Catholic faith. In addition to preaching, St. Anthony organized supplies for the poor and negotiated release for prisoners of war between Italian city-states. However you or your loved ones feel lost this week, pray for St. Anthony's intercession!

LTPTM—Reflecting & Living on the Word Matthew 3:31-35

“Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God

is my brother and my sister and mother.

Over and over, Jesus’ words and deeds call us to consider the oneness of our existence. Reserving the word “brother” or “sister” for only those related to us by blood or marriage fails to recognize the divinity in all that links us in ways we will never fully comprehend. Simply joining together in the will of God connects us in ways far more powerful than genetics. When we recognize this, we are able to build on it and make it stronger, using it for the benefit of all.

Who do you consider family? What are five qualities that you feel are important for families to have?

Making a family tree can be a great way to reconnect to your roots. If a family tree already has been put together, spend some time exploring it. If it has not, many online resources can help. Each child can make a simple family tree for themselves. Find a way to include people who are not necessarily connected to you by blood but are a part of your family or those you consider to be a part of your family nonetheless. Consider those you have “adopted” or those who have “adopted” you as a sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandparent. Talk about how we all have and need a family and what it means to be family to each other.
