Parish Office PASTORAL POST
Written by Sister Marie
FOR ALL THAT HAS BEEN ‘THANKS’. FOR ALL THAT WILL BE ‘YES’.
Thank you for letting me be the Pastoral Minister at St. Matthias for twenty-eight blessed
and wonderful years. The Religious Community to which I belong is the Sisters of Notre
Dame de Namur. The Sisters missioned me to St. Matthias on July 9, 1991, and said that
“Where one of us is, we all are.” They have always known that I was happy at St. Matthias,
and they do rejoice with me that “I had it so good.” Actually, our Foundress, St. Julie
Billiart, always spoke of the goodness of God, “Ah, how good is the good God!” Her
constant exclamation is on the cross that each of us wears.
First of all, I have loved that the Church is the center of life in the building. Of course, you
can tell that my favorite times have been before, during and after Mass, because then, we
are all together to hear God’s Word and to be fed by the Body and Blood of Jesus. I
especially loved ministering Holy Communion.
Before I came to St. Matthias, Fr. Raymond Lavelle told me that “St. Matthias is the hidden
gem of the Northland areas.” He was right. Plus he was right after the first pastor, Fr.
Ralph Dermody. When Fr. Lavelle’s time was up, Fr. James T. Smith asked to be appointed
to the then thirty-five year old parish. Fr. Smith hoped the people would help him to
become more human. He stayed twenty-two years, and he was who he was when he died
with the help of St. Matthias parishioners. Next Fr. Raymond Larussa became the fourth
pastor, March 5, 2013. In his five years, he happily shined up ‘the gem of the Northland
area’ in many ways. Fr. Anthony Davis requested to be the fifth pastor, and was welcomed
on July 10, 2018. It is evident that St. Mathias is his home, too. I am grateful to God for all
that I have experienced in assisting the pastors, and in being given the freedom to be
available for the people. Foremost in my sharing in the life of the Parish were Baptisms,
First Penance, First Holy Communions, Confirmations, Marriages, and the various
preparations of which I was a part, were very enriching.
From the beginning, it has been a privilege to be able to greet Winnie, Mr. Kinley, Mrs.
Reither, the teachers, staff, children and their parents each morning. I have admired them
all for so many reasons, especially for all that they continue to learn and change. There is
hard work involved and a great deal of love that goes into continuing education. Also, I
have seen that St. Matthias Athletic Association does a huge amount for families, and
thank God for all the past SMAC members. Our Sunday Ministers: Lectors, Eucharist,
Music, Ushers, Religion Teachers, Children’s Liturgy of the Word Leaders, Greeters, Donut
and Coffee people, Welcome Tablers have been so beautiful to know. Then there is
exceptional Sr. Mary Riley, OP and all the parishioners involved in assisting our immigrant
families. And so special are the generous ones in the Funeral Ministry, all who carry Our
Lord in Holy Communion to the homebound, all who volunteer for the homeless and
needy, and the knowledgeable Finance Committee. Being with the volunteers for Fish
Fries, Garage Sales, Scouts was yet another fulfilling blessing. There’s no counting the
times the Holy Spirit was thanked that, “They each suited up and showed up.” I have a
great deal of appreciation for the Parish first responders, and all the second, third ones,
too. I will forever remember you. I will remember each person whom the Loving Father
of us all has placed in my life at St. Matthias. My heart will be full of overflowing
thanksgiving every day, all day long forever.
STEWARDSHIP MEDITATION
“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” LUKE 12:34
Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encourages us to build
up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are you
investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are you investing in building
up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of
some of the things of this world.

GARAGE SALE: from Mary Cardinal Thanks a million to all of you who helped
make the Garage Sale a success. Without
your help, it couldn’t be done. You
worked hard each day – unpacking,
washing, cleaning, pricing, setting up, and

dates too. It took a lot of energy but it
was also a fun time. You’re the best!!!!
We made approximately $12,000.
