THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
Dear friends,
What a wonderful journey this has been! What won-
derful companions you have been! The time with you
these past two years were a blessed gift for me and my
family.
Little did I know the impact you would have in my life
and ministry when Bishop Greg suggested that I do my
Curacy in this parish. From the get go, you extended
your gift of hospitality and care to me, Ricci, Catie, Ga-
briel, Elías and eventually to Alexis too. Thank you.
Some of you have mentioned that you have seen me
grow as a priest and pastor. It is true, I am aware of my
own growth and gained experience. That is because
you were gentle and open. I found that with you I
could be myself, I felt safe to be vulnerable and sup-
ported in my learning and gaining of experience. I al-
ways try to be intentional and do the things right, but I
knew that among you I was in a safe place to make
mistakes and to learn from them.
St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas, you are a light in Vancouver.
You are a beacon, a hope.
I’ll take with me your deep sense of hospitality. The
hospitality you showed me, which is the same hospital-
ity you show to those coming through your doors
when in need and seeking help.
I’ll take with me your thirst for justice. You are honest
in knowing that you cannot solve all the problems in
the world, and yet you take seriously in word and ac-
tion your baptismal vows in striving for justice and
peace among all people.
I’ll take with me your love of food. Not that I didn’t
love food before, as you can well attest. You know how
to practice Eucharistic living, but welcoming everyone
at the Lord’s Table, by feeding those in need and by
sharing your food at the potlucks. I will miss the tama-
les.
I’ll take with me these and many others things.
I am looking forward to entering into this new leg of
the journey as rector of St. John’s, knowing that I can
always count on your prayers and love.
With gratitude and love,
Fr. Eliacín (English articles continue on page 8)
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
mí, Ricci, Catie, Gabriel, Elías y eventualmente a Alexis
Me di

Muchas gracias a Ebie
merosos voluntarios.
Nuestra nueva Administradora de la Parroquia, Eri-
ka Carranza comenzó a trabajar en Agosto 15. Ella y
Kris tendrán 5 semanas para intercambiar conoci-
miento y responsabilidades. Espero que todos tenga-
mos tiempo de darle la bienvenida. ¡Si no, puedes
8AM puedan regresar a divertirse!

REPORTE DEL GUARDIÁN MENOR Ventanas, ventanas, ventanas. Después de retrasos del
proveedor finalmente comenzamos a reparar algunas

ADMINISTRADORA
DE LA PARROQUIA Soy originaria de Jalisco, México.
Graduada del Instituto Lerma como
Auxiliar de Contador, y continué
mis estudios en Moorpark College
California.

¿Podemos regalarlo? Imagínese
cuanto pudiéramos haber comprado con $14,463. He-

recibimos muchas donaciones directas.

Meta 2: Expandir Programas Sociales
San Lucas has sido orgullo-
ra vital a organizaciones financieramente.
hecho donaciones monetarias a: the Diocesan Carbon
Offset Cooperative Mission (Philippines), Episcopal
Relief & Development (Global Needs), Living Stones
Capital Campaign (Seattle), Share (Vancouver), Babies
in Need (Vancouver), and HOPE (Vancouver). Los in-
je y comprado pantalones y zapatos, algunas ocasiones

Del Trabajo “Labor Day” St Luke’s – San Lucas podrá

SENIOR WARDEN’S REPORT Oh my, it is September all ready. How did the time go
so fast? Guess it is because this has been a busy sum-
mer. Activities at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas don’t stop just
because it is summer.
Jazz Vespers finished off the 2016-17 season.
Looking forward to next season’s artists.
In August there were the four TGIF 4 Hands con-
certs on Friday nights.
There was a successful tamale sale to support the
Immigration Committee’s efforts to assist children in
obtaining passports, whose parents are undocu-
mented.
VBS was a success this year. Many thanks to Ebie
Mountford for coming back to help and all the nu-
merous volunteers.
Our new Parish Administrator, Erika Carranza, be-
gan working on August 15. She and Kris will have 5
weeks to transfer knowledge and responsibilities.
Hope you’ve had a chance to welcome her. If not,
stop by the office during the week and introduce
yourself!
August 20 was a huge celebration of Eliacin’s time
with us as a curate. It was a joyful celebration of his
and his family’s ministries among us and a great
way to send him on to St. John’s, Snohomish.
August 27, was the blessing of the back packs as
school started August 30.
There was also an open session for feedback as we
look to having the women’s shelter with us again
this fall. Share has asked us to consider expanding
our services so an ad hoc committee is looking to the
congregation before we commit to anything more
than we did last year. Be sure to talk to a vestry
member if you were not able to attend this meeting.
Looking ahead, Welcome Back Sunday is September
3rd. We will combine the 10AM and the 1PM services
into one bilingual service at 11:00am with the tradi-
tional picnic to follow. Hope all you who attend the
8AM service will come back for the fun! It will be a
good way to celebrate the end of summer and get
ready for the fall. Speaking of fall, Sunday school will
begin on September 10. Sometime in September, we
are looking forward to celebrating Kris’ retirement.
Your vestry is starting to discuss the pledge drive for
this fall. We are looking over the financials and decid-
ing how to approach things this year. Last year, we fell
short of our goal of adding an additional priest but
were still able to do a lot of things to our physical
plant that needed to be done. I hope we can be as suc-
cessful this year. Please start thinking about what you
want to do for next year. You will be hearing from the
pledge committee soon. If anyone has a desire to serve
on this committee, please let me know. This is im-
portant work for the parish. I for one am a little sad to
see summer come to an end, but I am excited to see
what the fall will bring. I hope you are too.

JUNIOR WARDEN REPORT Windows, windows, windows. After several supplier
delays we finally started replacing some thirty-nine of
our sixty year-old inefficient windows on August 16th.
By the time you read this we should be complete with
this important project which will make us better insu-
lated and more air-tight. Every so often someone men-
tions to me that “such-and-such light is burned out” or
“I see ants in this part of the garden”. These com-
ments are very helpful so keep them coming. You can
also drop a note in the office which will be put in the
Thursday Crew folder for follow-up. Better yet, vol-
unteer for Thursday Crew. It’s actually lots of fun
with a great group people. Progress continues on the
shower room and laundry room in the basement.
Some walls are ready for paint and some are almost
ready for tile. We continue to work toward comple-
tion before the WHAT women’s shelter reopens in No-
vember.
Over the next month we’ll be repeating the discern-
ment process we went through last fall when we were
first approached by SHARE to provide space for the
10 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
WHAT shelter. I have felt the shelter has been a suc-
cess and I know the women we’ve hosted have greatly
appreciated the warm dry home we’ve provided, alt-
hough there have also been some bumps in the road.
SHARE is now asking if we can provide more space
and time for these women. The “more space” would
be up to two additional rooms for six additional wom-
en. The “more time” would be allowing the women to
stay around the clock and possibly year round. We
currently have a contract for twelve women, nights
only from November through March. Please share
your experiences with the shelter last year and your
comments and concerns about what these changes
would mean to St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas in the future. John Mathieu

GETTING TO KNOW
OUR NEW PARISH
ADMINISTRATOR I am originally from Jalisco, Mexico.
I graduated from Lerma Institute as
an Accounting Assistant, and then
continued my study in Moorpark
College California. Pursuing my
love for art, I started my own busi-
ness as a painter and muralist, then
I moved to Vancouver WA with my
two kids in 2012.
I have always been interested in connecting with the
community by volunteering and working for different
non-profit organizations promoting my culture while
blending my art and social work. For the last 5 years I
have been working as an Advocate and Case Manager
with survivors of Domestic Violence in Shelters and at
the Family Justice Center serving participants in Port-
land Oregon. I’m very excited to work as the new
Parish Administrator and be part of St. Luke’s ~ San
Lucas. I want to express my gratitude to Kris Lawless
for sharing her knowledge, I truly enjoy learning and
working with her and also with Fr. Jaime. I invite you
to stop at the office and say Hello, I’m really looking
forward to getting to know you all.
Sincerely, Erika Carranza

WELCOME BACK SUNDAY
SEPTEMBER 3RD St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas will worship together on Sun-
day, September 3 at 11AM at a Bilingual Service. Then
stay for BBQ & Picnic immediately following.
St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas will provide hamburgers, hot
dogs, garden burgers, buns and condiments. Please
bring a salad, chips, juice, burger additions or a dessert
to share. Volunteers requested to help with set-up and
clean-up. The Sign-up sheet for food and volunteers is
in Narthex.
STEWARDSHIP Dear People of SL2,
Every year I report on my charitable giving during the
previous year to the parish as a whole. Amy and I gave
a total of $14,463 in 2016. It was a difficult year because
Amy lost her job mid-year and I had to tell the
Treasurer that I would not make my whole tithe. The
tithe for 2016 comes to between 9% and 14% of our in-
come, depending on if you include things like pension,
health insurance and pre-taxable compensation. We
are happy we were able to give to SL2 10+% of my
gross before taxes. There are many, many ways we can
give 10% or more of our Time, Talents, and Treasure
“for the spread of the kingdom of God.” (BCP p. 856) I
like to look at numbers for certain things, like, how
well did we do in the area of generosity with our mon-
ey? Can we give it away? Imagine what we could have
bought with $14,463. We gave that support what we
feel called by God to support. That is satisfaction in-
deed! It’s been a joy to contribute most of our tithe to
SL2: This year we make sure our tithe to SL2 is 10% of
my compensation before taxes. Do what is best for
you! We are each different.

THE IMMIGRATION COMMITTEE The Immigration Committee is pleased to report great
success with our tamale sale. The sale was held to
provide undocumented parents help in paying for
passports for their American-born children. We intend
to pay for half of the fees for the passports for these
American Citizens.
Many thanks to Maria Zepeda and her huge team of
assistants. We had helpers ages young teens to seniors!
Despite the extreme heat in the kitchen at St. Luke's ~
San Lucas, there was a lot of laughter and fun while
we made over 1,000 tamales!! However, I think that the
next time we do this, we will plan it for late fall or
early spring when it is cooler.
So far, we have received $3,016, expensed $317.75, and
grossed $2,748.25. Most from sales of Tamales, but also
a lot from direct donations. The Immigration Com-
mittee would like to thank everyone who bought tama-
les or made donations to this cause. We hope the ta-
males were greatly enjoyed. We will be able to help a
lot of children get documentation proving their citizen-
ship.

VISION AND DESTINY Our shared life together as a Parish is rich, complex,
deep, and wide. That life, as a dimension of each of our
lives, is a matrix in which ministries are born, thrive,
wither, and then die. In a longer scale, churches may
do the same thing. We are promised that nothing that
we do in Christ’s name is really ever lost. God remem-
bers it. Our striving, though parochial, combines with
the striving of all people to bring us closer to the king-
dom of God. We are both local and an outpost of the
“Jesus Movement,” Episcopal Church branch.
In our life cycle we have challenges, but we are at a
pretty healthy place. So many good people are atten-
tive to the well-being of the ministries of the Parish.
The Parish is living out its vocation to serve in so many
ways that I have stopped trying to enumerate them.
With all the health come particular needs to view the
Parish as having a life-cycle much longer than our
own. We have been here a long time.
What will the future look like? How are we preparing
for the future St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas?
Let us gather together and formulate a vision for the
future, and try to imagine the steps we might take now
that will lead to that future. We have real influence on
our destiny.
On Saturday, September 23, at 10 am I am calling an
All Parish Meeting. The subject of the meeting is to
propose a long-term vision, say ten years from now, of
how our beloved Parish might be living out the Good
News. We will try to construct a future vision for the
Parish in relationship to Vancouver, how we might
attract people, and integrate people into the
Parish. Please plan on attending to give voice to your
own hopes for SL2.
Fr. Jaime
Goal 2: Expand Outreach VANCOUVER PEACE & JUSTICE FAIR September 9th from 9am to 4pm, is the date for the
14th annual Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair at Esther
Short Park. Once again, our parish will be there to pro-
mote what we do and what we value. This is a serious
outreach opportunity for us. Please help to plan, set
up, staff, and take down our display. Just let Father
Jaime know that you are interested by sending him an
email at [email protected].
ESL TUTORING St. St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas has offered English as a Sec-
ond Language (ESL) to interested students for the past
three years. For the first two years we offered class-
room sessions on a regular schedule. Separate child
care was provided for students with small children.
The classroom sessions have evolved over time. We
now offer individual ESL tutoring. This allows more
flexibility for both students and instructors. Students
may bring their children with them to the tutoring ses-
sions.
ALS WALK – SEPTEMBER 23, 2017 Dear Friends,
This is our 9th year in the WALK TO DEFEAT ALS. As
always, we will be walking in loving memory of Father
Eric Werts.
12 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
This 5K walk raises funds for research, support of fam-
ilies, awareness and most importantly finding a CURE.
ALS strikes someone every 90 minutes and every 90
minutes someone loses their battle with ALS. The aver-
age life span is 2 – 5 years after diagnosis. Father Eric
survived 3 years, 2 months and 10 days. Help put ALS
in the forefront in people’s minds.
The ALS Association and the community of St Luke’s ~
San Lucas were so good to us and helped make Eric’s
journey so much easier. Please consider supporting
our team FOR THE LOVE OF ERIC this year with a
donation as we WALK TO DEFEAT ALS. Online dona-
tions are via: http://webor.alsa.org/goto/ruth_werts or
just mail me a check made payable to “ALS Associa-
tion”.
Hope you can join us for the walk on Saturday, Sep-
tember 23rd at Esther Short Park. Registration begins
at 11am and the walk begins at noon. If you can join
us please let me know. (If you walked last year, please
wear your red bandana again as a symbol of FOR THE
LOVE OF ERIC team.) Thank you so very much.

OUTREACH FUNDS DISTRIBUTION According to Frequently Asked Questions on the inter-
net the Episcopal Church is a community of people
united by their faith in Jesus Christ and eagerness to
serve others. Through our many Outreach initiatives
many St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas members are able to find
a cause that touches their hearts and in which they can
personally give and/or serve. Additionally, we have
been able to help vital organizations financially. Since
January, Outreach
Ministry has made
monetary donations
to: the Diocesan Car-
bon Offset Coopera-
tive Mission
(Philippines), Episco-
pal Relief & Develop-
ment (Global Needs),
Living Stones Capital
Campaign (Seattle),
Share (Vancouver), Babies in Need (Vancouver), and
HOPE (Vancouver). Please visit the bulletin board out-
side the church office for more details on these dona-
tions. Thank you for your generosity!
OUTREACH At our meeting August 9th, we updated each other on
the School Supplies effort, and authorized another gift
for $1,000 to support tiny homes for the homeless,
pending some more information. Our expenses have
been in line with our outlay, but we note an increase in
purchases of food for the food bags for people with
access to kitchens. More donations for these kinds of
nonperishable foods would be great!
We will have a booth at the Peace and Justice Fair on
September 9th and hope you will consider volunteering
for an hour shift or some other role that day, or at least
come by to visit the booth and the fair. Thanks to Den
Mark, we have been an anchor for many years at the
Peace and Justice Fair!
Men’s clothing continues to be a challenge. We buy
inexpensive items that our clients go through quickly,
like white socks, and some intrepid Outreach volun-
teers have been hitting the garage sales to pick up jeans
and men’s shoes, sometimes for free when they tell the
sellers that the purchase is to give away in our Out-
reach program.
Negotiations will begin soon for the SHARE WHAT
shelter, whether there will be expansion at SL2. Our
contract has WHAT returning November 1, and leav-
ing March 31, then the contract expires, so the re-
negotiation is timely. Look for an announcement for a
forum to get members’ feedback on the negotiations!
Coming up this fall, we will be doing Thanksgiving
Baskets, the Giving Tree, and continuing our Tuesday
through Friday distributions. Look for announcements
for BURGERVILLE effort to raise money for homeless
children in the Vancouver School District. And we
hope to participate in the Compassion Clinic for Van-
couver, to which we gave $1,000 last fall.
All interested persons are also invited to be present at
the Visioning SL2 event on September 23, to advocate
for Outreach as part of the many ministries that make
up the Parish.

Goal 3: Spiritual Growth SUNDAY SCHOOL Our first day back will be September 10. We look for-
ward to learning more stories to share with the chil-
dren and coming up with more ways to help them
learn and enjoy Sunday School.

VBS WEEK REPORT From July 18-21, St. Luke's ~ San Lucas held its annu-
al Vacation Bible School. The theme this year was
"Maker Fun Factory." Thirty-eight children and sixteen
volunteers spent the week learning about God's reason
for making each of us. The Bible lessons were taught
through songs, daily teaching, video lessons, and crea-
tive play. Each day ended with Imagination Station, a
hands-on lesson where the activities included creating
stuffed teddy bears, building wind-up toys, and solv-
ing 3-D puzzles. Special thanks go out to Ebie Mount-
ford, for coming out of retirement and spending her
week with the children of St. Luke's ~ San Lucas. The
children and volunteers awarded her with the #1 Fun
Maker Blue Ribbon award at the end of a very fun
week.
YOUTH GROUP All youth in grades 6th – 12th are welcome to par-
ticipate in this group’s activities. We will kick off
September with two evening meetings, both Saturday
evenings will be from 6 PM to 8PM in the parish hall.
On Saturday, September 16th we will have a Pizza
Night for the youth when we can get acquainted and
catch up on our summer activities.
On September 23rd we will have a Family Cook-Out for
youth and their parents. This will be a great opportuni-
ty for parents to meet other parents and youth to meet/
reconnect with other youth. We will work on plans for
the upcoming year and discuss dinner opportunities/
options. There will also be information about Diocesan
Youth Conferences and transportation. Please save and
the date so that you can come to this important and
fun time together.

FALL DIOCESAN YOUTH EVENTS As you are working on your planning for your youth
group's events and activities, I'd like to invite you to
consider adding the diocesan youth retreats to your
calendar and work on scheduling around these dates
for your other events so that youth can take advantage
of all that the church has to offer them. HYC is a re-
treat for those in grades 9-12, JYC is a retreat for those
in grades 6-9.
Here are all the dates for the Fall 2017-18 school year:

FAMILY MINISTRIES We just got done adding a rug to the open area on the
north side of the Narthex, so that our kids could be
comfortable and safe while the parents can still listen
to the service through the speakers. Now we could use
a supply of things to play with in that area. Anyone
interested in donating or shopping for the little ones?
A poster with a quote such as “Suffer the little children
to come unto me” would also be appropriate to mark
the area.
With Fr Eliacin departed from us for greener pastures,
we have a big hole in our ministries. WE are looking
for ways to enhance our ministries to the smallest
among us. Herlinda is struggling to keep up with her
very demanding job and still give us time for Godly
Play on Sundays. Any and all are called to help with
this vital ministry!
CONFIRMATION INQUIRY CLASS I’m preparing to start classes for Confirmation. Confir-
mation is seen as a mature profession of faith, and so is
open to people 16 years or older. The Bishop will be
14 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
here to do Confirmation: It is one of the sacraments re-
served only for Bishops. The class will be an open fo-
rum with various teachers to tackle subjects that relate
to the Gospel, our Episcopal role in it, and our particu-
lar lives at SL2 where we try to express the Good News.
You do not have to be planning to be confirmed to
attend the class. Classes will begin on September 17th, at
11:40 AM in Children’s Chapel. We will not be having
class the Sunday after Thanksgiving. If one is planning
to be confirmed, received or reaffirmed, terms which
we will explain in the class, the date of the Bishop’s vis-
it is Saturday, December 2, at 11 AM. I look forward to
an exciting class!
Fr. Jaime Case
WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP All women are welcome as we begin another year of
reading, studying and sharing. We will resume our 2nd
Saturday monthly sessions on Saturday, October 14
when we will gather from 10AM to 12PM. This will be
a time to come together and expand our spiritual expe-
riences with a feminine view.
Each Saturday session begins with refreshments and
friendly conversation then we will begin our study and
discussion based on the book, The Heartbeat of God –
Finding the Sacred in the Middle of Everything” by Kathe-
rine Jefferts Schori, former Presiding Bishop of the Epis-
copal Church. We will have 12 books available for a
suggested donation of $14 in September. Scholarships
are available. Or you can purchase this book from our
local Barnes and Noble, if you call and order first, on
Amazon, Abebook.com and other sellers. Used books
are also a great option too! The reading assignment for
our October meeting will be included in the October
Messenger.
If you need Nursery care for young children, ages 0-3
years please let us know so that we can provide for
their care while you attend these sessions.
Hoping you will join us! If you have any questions con-
tact one of the conveners:

LECTOR & LAY EUCHARISTIC
MINISTER (LEM) MINISTRY Are you a long time member of this important minis-
try? Are you new to St. Luke's ~ San Lucas and looking
for a way to get involved? Do you enjoy public speak-
ing, or are you looking for a way to get some practice?
Do you want to share Eucharist with others? If you an-
swered yes to any of these, then we'd love to have you
join us on Saturday, October 7th. We will be having a
training and review session for all new and veteran
Lectors and LEM's. This session will also serve as re-
quired continuing education for licensing by the Dio-
cese of Olympia. We will meet in the sanctuary from
9am - noon. Please reply to Jill McClellan at
[email protected] if you plan to attend, or are
unable to make it and plan to begin or continue serving
as a Lector or LEM.
10AM LITURGICAL CHANGES On July 30, Sunday, we changed our liturgy in many
ways: We can now access The Inclusive Bible electroni-
cally, and so our readings of scripture will come from
there. Changes include: Opening Salutation from En-
riching Our Worship; return to the Immigrants’ Creed; use
Joan Casey’s Prayers of the People; sung Confession
(Hymn #674); Collect and Eucharistic Prayer from Pray-
ers for an Inclusive Church and the Lord’s Prayer from New
Zealand Prayer Book. We are rotating through three versions
of the Sunday liturgy during this long season after Pen-
tecost.
One more change will take place October 1. I hope you
find the breadth of the liturgies we use refreshing to
your faith.

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM September brings the start of another choir and
hand-bell season, which begins officially on Sunday
September 10th, preceded by a bi-lingual Welcome Back
Sunday service on the 3rd over the Labor Day weekend.
Many thanks for the musical laborers who helped with
special music during the summer, including our “Three
Sopranos:” Catherine van der Salm, Beth Lawson, and
Avis Horjus, plus the men of the choir who held forth
beautifully on August 13th, and all the volunteers who
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 15
sang with the informal Sunday morning summer choir.
Regular rehearsals start on Wednesday evening, Sep-
tember 13th with bells at 6 PM and choir at 7 PM. New
members are always welcome, both singers and ring-
ers.
The Vestry recently gave the go-ahead to hire two cho-
ral scholars to help solidify our choir. If you know of
any young professional singers or talented college-age
students who want to learn about liturgical music
practice and to support the worship life of our parish,
please speak with me promptly.
Mike Horsfall is busy setting up the next roster of art-
ists for our Jazz Vespers services, which begin on Sat-
urday, October 7th at 6 PM. Many thanks to the vol-
unteers from the Music Committee who helped to
make the second annual TGIF Piano Duet Festival
Vancouver a success. Chor Anno returns for a concert
again at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas on September 16th at
7:00pm. Mark your calendars and look for details on
our Fall offerings. Here we go again!
Tim Nickel, Director of Music
COFFEE HOUR Thank you to all who have offered to host Coffee Hour
in the next year. It is very helpful when each family
takes a turn at hosting one Sunday a year. There are
still some open dates remaining to be filled. Thank you
to Ryan Bishop who provides great help in our kitchen
and is responsible for supporting our hosts each week.
The new schedule for June through May is currently
posted near the kitchen.
Coffee Hour The Coffee Hour hosts for September are as follows:
3 September Welcome Back Picnic
10 September Schlatters
17 September van der Salms
24 September Denny/Surface
1 October Harris
LUNCH BUNCH We will be starting up our monthly luncheon and pro-
grams on Tuesday, September 12 at 12PM. Our pro-
gram for this month will be provided by SW Washing-
ton Elder Abuse Prevention Coalition. Our lunch is a
pot-luck so we ask that you use the sign-up sheets in
the Narthex to let us know if you will be attending and
what you want to contribute to the luncheon.
"R @ R" GROUP Rev. Chuck Barnes has left us for sunny Southern
California BUT the R @ R group is still on the calen-
dar!! Nancy Denny and Bob Stevens invite all retirees
and others wanting a breakfast out with lively conver-
sation to join us on the 3rd Wednesday of each month
at 9:00 AM at Dulin's Café located at 1929 Main St.
Vancouver WA 98665. In September we will gather on
Wednesday, September 20th.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE
These gatherings are one of the best ways to get to
know your St Luke’s ~ San Lucas family, and for the
family to get to know YOU! Please join us!
Once each month we gather in someone’s home to
share food, laughter and fellowship. Each dinner is a
potluck, with guests bringing appetizer, entrée, salad/
side or dessert and a beverage to share. Be sure to sign
up so the host will know how many to plan for. In Sep-
tember, we will gather at the home of Nancy Denny,
8318 NW Bacon Rd Vancouver 98665, 360-573-2415, on
Friday, September 22 at 6:30PM.
It’s not too soon to think about hosting a Friday Night
Live in 2018. The host sign-up sheet is posted beside
the kitchen door in the Parish Hall, underneath the
monthly sign up sheets. Summer months go especially
fast, so don’t wait too long to put your name on the
list. If you have room for us to gather indoors, consider
hosting during a fall/winter or early spring months.
This will allow those who don’t have as much indoor
space to host during summer months.

YOU’RE INVITED Tom and Ann Amies will celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary on September 2, 2017. They were married
at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Vancouver, Washing-
ton and are long-time parishioners. The Amies family
invites friends and relatives to celebrate with them on
September 9 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at St. Luke's ~San
Lucas Parish Hall.
16 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
Some of Tom and Ann’s many volunteer activities in-
clude: Evergreen School District, Society of Washing-
ton Artists, Vancouver Farmers Market, Girl Scouts,
Order of St. Luke, American Red Cross, Clark County
Fair Fine Arts, and OMSI’s Interactive Chemistry Lab.
Tom retired after working at NW Natural Gas Com-
pany for 37 years. Ann has taught art through Clark
College Community Education, in the Evergreen
School District, and to private students. They are both
active in Ann’s business, Calli de Graphique.
Tom and Ann have two daughters: Kris Burleigh and
Holly (Bryan) Van Horn. They also have five grand-
children.
PLEASE HOLD WHILE WE PRAY On November 30, 1960, The Oregonian had this brief
article: “
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Vancouver has this no-
tice in bulletin: “If you have called the Parish office
and have been asked to hold the line while your party
is being called to the telephone, you may have won-
dered about the music you heard while waiting. So
have we. Our telephones have a ‘hold’ button which is
pressed while you wait. Apparently this immediately
puts radio KGW on the line through some freak cir-
cumstances of electronics. We are glad you enjoy the
music, but the commercials do not reflect the opinions
of the St. Luke’s Church.”
True, it was noted in an earlier
Lantern, the predecessor to The
Messenger. We can only wonder
about the songs that might have
been heard on our church phone.
Like “Teen Angel”, “Stairway to
Heaven”, “Only the Lonely”, “The
Twist”, “You Talk too Much”, “Are You Lonesome
Tonight?”, or that favorite, with the Parish Treasurer,
“It’s Now or Never”. All were hits in 1960, and now
they are buzzing around your head, including the
song “I’m Sorry”.
It is of small interest that MOH, or ‘Music On Hold’
wasn’t ‘invented’ until 1962, nor patented until 1965.
The likely successor telephone company to the one in
Vancouver in 1960 wasn’t interested about hearing
this story. Perhaps because music played by a radio
station is supposed to be copyrighted. OOPS! Pat Lawless, Parish Archivist
Goal 4: Pastoral Care
PASTORAL CARE COMMITTEE Please let us know if you have someone who is not
able to come to church, is in some type of crisis, medi-
cal or otherwise, or, perhaps, is in the hospital, by
making a call to the office. Our meetings are on the
fourth Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will
be on September 26 at 6:30 pm in the Chapel of the
Holy Spirit, (Children’s Chapel).
The Rev. Dennis Cole
LIFE GOES ON The next meeting of Life Goes On is Thursday,
September 28 at 2 pm at Glenwood Retirement Cen-
ter (5500 NE 82nd Ave, near the Vancouver Mall). We
are a group of people who have faced significant loss
and are in the process of grieving. Some lost someone
several years ago, others have lost someone this past
year. We share grief and loss and work hard not only
to remember the ones we have lost but to find new
meaning and purpose in continuing our lives. Life
does go on. Please feel welcomed to come join our
group. We share together from 2-4PM, including some
goodies, coffee and tea.
