h, the joys of spring cleaning. It’s one of those

tasks that I really do look forward to, if only for

the immense feeling of satisfaction I get at its

conclusion. The “doing” part is another story

altogether. If I’m lucky, I can maybe get those

three people who insist on calling me “Mom”

and that one big guy who also lives in my house to help out.

So, as I dream about a squeaky clean kitchen, bathrooms that

sparkle, crumbless floors and closets so perfectly put together

that I can’t find anything anymore, I am also focusing my

attention on my other home — the magazine — and doing a

little spring cleaning here.

In the April issue, we’re introducing some brand-new

departments that I hope you will love. I know I do.

“Hot Hue” is all about color. This month, we highlight the

many shades of pink, truly a springtime favorite and a nod to

Pantone’s 2011 Color of the Year, Honeysuckle. Each month,

we’ll showcase a different hue or palette and give you ideas on

how to bring that color into your home.

In “Bright Idea,” we’ll share with you one terrific new idea each issue that will hopefully inspire you

to think “outside the box.”

“Spotlight” is just that — a place to bring attention to one masterfully designed room, architecture

that takes your breath away, a creative person that you have to meet, inspired outdoor spaces,

St. Louis neighborhoods and more. You never know what you’ll find in “Spotlight.”

“Toss a Party” has been renamed “Celebrate” and will continue to offer you a glimpse into our

readers’ fabulous parties, catered by the best restaurants in town. As always, we will give you great

ideas on throwing your own soirees, from menus to invitations to décor. Look for “Celebrate” three

or four times a year.

“Delish Dish” will feature one outstanding recipe from a well-known chef in town. (This month, it’s

Kevin Sthair, Executive Chef at Balaban’s). “Tablescape” will be a feast for the eyes as local interior and

floral designers create magical themed tabletops with plenty of ideas for you to take away.

April also features our last dedicated “Ecologic” story. We will still look for great green projects,

though, and share them with you as part of a regular home feature or in one of our new departments.

For more on eco-friendly living, look to our blog and our website.

Whew! This cleaning stuff is hard, but oh so rewarding! I hope you will enjoy our new lineup and will

continue to look for your old favorites.

Happy Cleaning!

A

a look at how our cover logo has changed over the years. Our very fi rst logo in 1996

This enchanting, bold hue is popping up everywhere, especially since world-renowned color authority Pantone® named Honeysuckle, a vibrant and

energetic reddish pink, the 2011 Color of the Year. Captivating, confident and just downright pretty, Honeysuckle will lift your mood and breathe new life into your home

this spring. Look for it in paint, fabric, accessories and furniture. Use it in big doses or just a bit here and there. Honeysuckle is sure to bring a smile to your face.

It’s a hue that just makes you feel, well, really happy.

SLHL: It’s so fun to be invited into someone’s own home and see how they create spaces for themselves. Your hearth room has such a fresh vibe. It’s traditional, but not quite. How would you describe your design style?

MARY: I guess you would say that I like classic décor but

enjoy adding pops of color and an element of surprise to a

room. When Maggie and I go to Market or to antique stores

— or even when we travel — we always try to find items

that are unusual, things that not everyone would have. It’s

these special pieces that “hold” a room and give it interest.

SLHL: And yet, your basic palette is neutral.

MARY: Yes, if you go with neutrals on the wall, it’s easier to

interject color in other places. Our design actually started

with the wallpaper, which is a handpainted design by

Schumacher.

MAGGIE: If you notice the wallpaper, though, it’s neutral and

traditional, but the oversized pattern gives it an edge. We

wanted a background that would be interesting but that

would be quiet enough to allow us to be creative and let

our accessories, such as lamps, paintings and pillows, pop.

above: Mary (standing) and Maggie Stieven have created a comfortable, yet stylish hearth room for family and friends to gather. Purposefully placed accessories and jolts of crisp color add vibrancy and a twist to the traditional décor. Rustic touches, such as the handmade twig chandelier, are unexpected and fun additions to this space. Neutral sofas from Arhaus provide a soft background for fun pillows from MKS.

STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM APRIL 2011 19

SLHL: You both have a great eye for color. Can you give us some advice on how to use bright hues to give a traditional interior some punch?

MARY: I always gravitate to the crisper colors — bold colors that pop

against neutrals. I love that look. One of my favorite colors these days

is orange. I see this really vibrant hue popping up all over in today’s

interiors; it can replace that “touch of red” that everybody always says

you need. Orange is a happy color, and it blends so well with all design

styles. Two of my favorite pieces are my French fireside chairs that I

picked up at The White Rabbit. Reupholstered in orange velvet, the

chairs have such presence.

SLHL: You’ve both done a great job at making your hearth room both comfortable and chic. It’s certainly a place where family and friends would want to be. Do you spend a lot of time here?

MARY: Oh, my gosh, yes. This is truly a family home, and our kitchen/

hearth room is where we gather together.

MAGGIE: On a normal day, there are more than eight people in this

house — dogs, too. We really live in our spaces, but that doesn’t mean

they can’t look put together. See page 70 for design resources.

SLHLSPOTLIGHT

And the same goes for her living spaces. Creative, colorful and

confi dent, the beautifully designed bedrooms of these three teenage

sisters are not only classy and fabulous, they are also in harmony with

each girl’s individual personality.

When this close-knit family fi rst moved into their suburban St. Louis

home, their daughters’ new bedrooms were neutral and a bit bland,

rather than the bright, dreamy spaces they envisioned for their personal

retreats. Desiring a total transformation, Brigette, the girls’ mother,

called on interior designer Pat O’Neal, owner of Intuitions Designs, to

fashion her daughters’ bedrooms into style-savvy sanctuaries where

they could relax, do homework and entertain friends.

“It’s really fun to design for girls,” says Pat, who has three sons. “The

rooms are refl ective of the girls’ personalities, and Brigette and her

daughters are so in tune with what works best for them.” To take their

ideas to the next level and tie each space together, new bedding,

custom curtains and all-important accessories were carefully selected.

At 17, Molly is the oldest of the three sisters. Dreaming of a space

that would be vibrant and bold, she selected an upbeat palette of hot

pink, orange, aqua and lime green. “Molly’s room has an older, edgier

vibe,” explains Pat, adding that while each room is beautiful, it’s also

livable. “Molly likes to keep things simple, so we used a soft rug and

no-fuss bedding with only a few pillows,” she says. According to Molly,

the end result is nothing short of perfect. “I really love my bed now,” she

says. “The bedding is so cute and comfy.”

Just down the hall, 15-year-old Caitlin’s cozy bedroom is a classic

example of polished pink and green. “The girls and Brigette love color,”

says Pat. “There’s so much that can grow out of that.” And grow it did.

With Pat’s expertise, Caitlin’s bedroom was soon a well-dressed haven

of haute couture. Polka dots, bows, a chic chandelier and other

feminine fi nishing touches give the space a glamorous, girlie feel.

“Caitlin is a fashionista,” says Brigette. “She loves the details.”

Grace, who is 13 and the youngest of the three, was to have a room

with a hip, beachy vibe that would fi t her sunny disposition. A more

playful color palette and fun yet fashionable décor are the perfect

complements. “We decided to break up the color to give it some interest,”

says Pat of the two-toned aqua and lime-green walls, adding that the

colorful fl oral drapery was the starting point in their design. “Grace’s

room is energetic and happy, just like her personality,” notes Brigette.

Each of the sisters now has a beautiful bedroom that teenage girls

everywhere dream about. And best of all, with their colorful yet classic

designs, the rooms can grow with the girls.

“The girls love their rooms,” says Brigette. “It’s nice to come home from

a long day at school to a relaxing space that welcomes you with all of

your favorites — colors, textures and memories.”

Three colorful teenage girls’ bedrooms radiate a playful mix

of fashion and fun

N estled along Russell Boulevard

in the historic neighborhood and close-knit community of Compton

Heights, a classic Victorian manor exudes the breathtaking beauty of a

bygone era. Tastemakers in their own right, the home’s owners, Chris

Brenner and Tyler Olsen, have filled its rooms with a masterful mix of

stately style and chic sensibility. But aside from impeccable taste and a

penchant for interior design, these talented homeowners also possess

the most essential of traits – a deep appreciation for the rich history

that flows throughout their remarkable residence.

Built in 1897 by prominent attorney Herman Haeussler, the home’s

style is an authentic reflection of St. Louis architecture during the

late Victorian period. Amazingly, Chris and Tyler are only the third

owners in 113 years. “This home was state-of-the-art when it was built,”

notes Tyler, who goes on to explain that its design even included such

modern conveniences as indoor plumbing, electricity and gas fixtures –

all rare luxuries at the turn of the 20th century.

Although Compton Heights is now just minutes from the hustle and

bustle of Downtown, according to Tyler, it was at one time a 20-minute

trolley or carriage ride, making it an elite escape from the more industrial,

soot-infested areas of St. Louis. Another point of historical interest

surrounding the home is its connection with the famous Col. Alonzo

William Slayback, who established the distinguished Veiled Prophet Ball

in 1878. As a partner in Haeussler’s law practice, Slayback was a frequent

Page 40: St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles

houseguest throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “Houses

in this neighborhood carry a lot of history,” says Tyler.

To enhance their new home while respecting its architectural

integrity, Chris, a nurse, and Tyler, a real estate agent, embarked on a full-

scale rehab. “The house was still in its original condition, so we kept the

original floor plan,” says Chris, adding, “We were so fortunate.” That’s not

to say, however, that there weren’t major changes to be made; the home

even had a room filled with more than two feet of coal. But only one

year later, having patiently uncovered a “diamond in the rough,” Tyler

and Chris were living in their dream home. Resplendent with gorgeous,

century-old architectural accents – including the original wooden

molding, front door, pocket doors, second-floor transoms, windows and

a stunning stained glass work of art at the main staircase landing – the

home radiates a sense of character that can only come with age.

Desiring décor that would complement the home’s genteel

personality, the homeowners have filled their interior spaces with

thoughtfully chosen pieces that exquisitely convey elegance and an

unsurpassed sense of style. Chic antiques, which, like the home, have

led long and interesting lives, as well as unbelievable estate sale finds,

exist in historic harmony within the walls of this Victorian residence.

Original artwork by notable painters dress the walls in nearly every room,

encompassing a range of styles from a lovely oil on canvas by 18th-

century American Impressionist Kathryn E. Cherry to the arresting, larger-

than-life mid-century abstract works by Edward Boccia, now a professor

emeritus of fine arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

Buttery cream, soft sage, restful khaki and deep rust offer a polished

color palette that infuses each of the home’s spaces with an ageless

beauty, blending brilliantly with the classically styled furnishings. “We’re

more traditional in style,” says Chris. “I want our home to be timeless.” He

has, inarguably, achieved just that.

Sharing their labor of love with family and friends has been one

of Chris and Tyler’s greatest joys. Whether hosting an intimate dinner

party of eight or an enormous holiday extravaganza of more than 250,

Chris and Tyler enjoy making their guests feel at home. “We have always

loved sharing our home with friends and neighbors,” explains Tyler.

A superb masterpiece of fine design, modern practicality and

extraordinary history, this grand yet gracious home is a time-honored

tribute to the splendor of St. Louis architecture and style.

E ven with all of its exquisite accoutrements, gorgeous

antiques, rich fabrics and detailed architectural design, you just know

the minute you step foot into this beautiful home that family is what

it’s all about. The warmth that emanates from the walls’ very pores

immediately wraps itself around you, taking hold and making you

never want to leave.

For the homeowners, a couple with two young sons, the home they

wanted to build was to be a comfortable place to raise their family;

a place where Bryn, their beloved yellow lab, could be happy and free; a

place they could share with family and friends. It’s not surprising

then that they admire the French Country style of interior decoration

and chose it for their home.

Springing forth from the hillsides of rural France, French Country

décor evokes a cozy, intimate and somewhat old-world ambience.

The look is relaxed, inviting and fuss-free. “The homeowners desired a

warm welcoming home that was family-friendly and, at the same time,

casually elegant to complement their new home’s very detailed French

Country architecture,” says their interior designer, Tom Manche, Allied

Member, ASID, of Tom Manche Interiors.

“Tom came onboard from the start, as soon as the architectural

plans were complete,” say the homeowners. “He guided us from that

point on, every step of the way.” They are also quick to point out

that their architect, Dick Busch of Dick Busch Architects, and their

custom builder, Kevin Sanders of The K.V. Sanders Company, did

an amazing job realizing their dream of a French Norman-inspired

residence. “Dick and Kevin were instrumental in making our home

happen, on time and with every detail in place,” they say.

“This home was designed to resemble an 18th-century Country

French estate,” says Dick.

“The homeowners were committed to having their home’s

architecture and finishes accurately represent the Country French

estates built during this time period,” adds Kevin. “They had definitely

done their research.”

It was then up to Tom to build upon that research, envisioning and

executing a spectacular interior worthy of the stately façade, while

at the same time creating warm family spaces that were inviting

and comfortable. “In a large home such as this,” explains Tom, “it can be

challenging to create an ambience of intimacy. The selection of a rich

color palette of terra-cotta, moss green and golden yellow for the main

level helped us to achieve this goal.” Weaving these lush hues throughout

the great room, library, hearth room, dining room and kitchen, Tom

was able to design rooms with layers of color that spoke quietly to one

another while maintaining their own unique perspectives.

When choosing furniture for their new home, the homeowners

opted for a comfortable yet gracious style that would be as timeless

as it was tasteful. “With a nod to true French Country style,” says Tom,

“we combined family heirlooms and antiques with newer pieces. The

French use their treasures; they don’t hide them away for safekeeping.”

Yet, even the great room, with its stunning fabrics reminiscent of old

French tapestries, is kept down-to-earth by the soft colors and a style

of French Country furniture that is much more casual than what the

average person considers typically French. The chandeliers, massive

in scale yet befitting the high vaulted ceiling, are glorious overhead,

drawing the eye upward to the glittering stained glass clerestory

windows that encourage sunlight to dance across the room, creating

ribbons of color.

The magnificent dining room is actually an extension of the great

room.“ We did this on purpose,” say the homeowners. “We really wanted

our guests to be all together, whether they are relaxing on the sofas

or gathered around the dining table.” And that philosophy doesn’t

end with the interior spaces. Large French doors open from the

dining room onto a delightful veranda, where guests can linger in the

warmer months, taking in the impressive view of the pool and outdoor

entertaining area below.

Page 47: St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles

STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM APRIL 2011 45

The spacious kitchen and adjoining hearth room are where this

young family really enjoys spending quality time together. Flowing

eff ortlessly into one another, these two warm gathering areas are truly

the heart of this home. The kitchen, with its French Country manor

house feel, immediately makes you want to stay awhile. Natural stone

fl oors are a neutral backdrop for the rich, warm, dark wood furniture

that suggests casual comfort. Custom cabinetry in a creamy custom

European fi nish is juxtaposed beautifully with stunning granite

that matches the home’s soft color palette. A more rustic stone

fi replace in the hearth room begs family and friends to gather ’round and

relax on the comfy sofas. Tall window panels in a charming old French

print, a favorite of the homeowners, beautifully frame the outside views.

“Everything works so well,” say the couple. “The rooms are comfortable

yet pulled together. All of the fabrics in the hearth room are beautiful

and sturdy. They stand up well to two boys and a dog.”

And that’s really what it’s all about here — creating memories in

a family-friendly home that is at once completely comfortable and

casually elegant. “We love to entertain for our family and friends,” say

the homeowners. “We wanted a place where everyone we love would

feel at home.” See page 70 for Design Resources.

T here’s something almost hypnotic about being there. The

tumbling water of the Big River, composing a peaceful cadence,

lifts you from the mundane and transports you to a place where

everything is good and right with the world. Towering trees keep

watch over proliferous, flowering gardens and ponds rife with

colorful fish, drawing your eye upward to a remarkable three-story

home just off the river’s edge. For Jim and Jeannie Lalumondiere,

this idyllic paradise is home.

But paradise wasn’t always perfect. What began its life in the

mid-1800s as a grist mill (a building in which grain is ground into

flour), the Byrnesville Mill was suffering from years of neglect.

In 1974, the Lalumondieres resurrected this former center of

commerce from its sorry state, breathing new life into its soul and

giving it renewed purpose as a home to raise their family.

Needless to say, Jim and Jeannie are visionaries. They saw the

pearl hidden deep within this shell of a building and were willing

to take the time to uncover its treasure.

“I believe that our limited financial resources at the time we

began the renovation of our Mill home proved an advantage in

the long run,” says Jeannie. “We were forced to use our ingenuity

and repurposed materials that lent themselves to the character

and age of the building and its surroundings,” she adds.

Truly, preserving the past and respecting their natural

surroundings is one of the homeowners’ core beliefs. “Recycling,

or ‘repurposing’ as it is called now, is so popular today,” says

Jim, “but we were repurposing long before it was fashionable.”

Their exquisite property is an eclectic creation that keeps

evolving as Jim and Jeannie stumble upon new finds. “We

love the thrill of the hunt,” beams Jeannie. “It’s wonderful to

find something and say ‘what can I do with this?’ It forces you

to be creative, and we love that.”

Jim Lalumondiere has always found great joy in making

something out of nothing. He began his career as an apprentice,

living upstairs in the upholstery shop in which he worked. “I told

the owner that he didn’t have to pay me until I started making him

money,” says Jim. “I loved to sew, and it showed in my work. I even

made Jeannie’s wedding dress!”

It was that same creative passion that gave Jim the impetus he

needed to build a home and gardens that so clearly reflect his and

Jeannie’s belief in the value of using what you have. “Jim is a natural

born salvager,” Jeannie says with a smile. “He finds architectural pieces

from all over St. Louis as buildings are being torn down. We always

have an amazing amount of stuff, but sooner or later, it all gets used,

and I always end up pleased with the results.”

The outdoor oases that surround Jim and Jeannie’s home represent

some of their most significant ecological achievements. Multi-level

patios and gathering areas are terraced throughout the 7-acre property,

offering unparalleled views of the Big River and the natural landscaping

that surrounds it. “We plant very little, except containers and

window boxes,” says Jim. “We just let nature be, and this is what

we got.” What they got was an organic utopia that could never have

been planned had they tried.

Jim has enhanced his and Jeannie’s gardens with unbelievable

salvaged finds. “The things I use have stories to tell,” he says. One of their

favorite areas is what they call “the ruins,” which showcases stone pieces

Jim collected from some of St. Louis’ finest structures as they met their

demise. “There’s something so intriguing about walking into a ‘ruin,’” says

Jim. “You can’t help but imagine what used to be right there.”

Luckily, Jim and Jeannie understand and value what is “right

there,” respecting their natural surroundings and giving new life to little

pieces of history. After all, isn’t that what “green living” is really all about?

See page 70 for design resources.

Left: A colorful cabana doubles as a guest room. “Overnight guests have been known to fight over who gets to sleep in the cabana,” says Jeannie. For the homeowners, it’s all about making your friends and family feel relaxed. “If you create an environment where your guests are completely comfortable,” says Jim, “you’ve peaked.” Below,

For beginning gardeners or seasoned pros, here’s a list of

“Top 10 Best-Performing Perennials & Shrubs”

By Kim Reiss, Senior Plant Fanatic, for Sugar Creek Gardens and president

of the St. Louis Hydrangea Society.

St. Louis’ best selection of exceptional and rare plants.

Question: I don’t have the

time or energy to

spend hours in my garden.

Can you recommend some

perennial plants that are

low-maintenance and good

bloomers and will also

take the St. Louis

heat?

Answer: We’re seeing

this trend at the nursery –

young homeowners who

work a lot and maybe

have small children and

retirees who might not

have the stamina or the

“knee health” needed to do

heavy gardening.

Here are our top 10 favorite perennials and shrubs that require

no fussing – I have eight out of 10 in my home garden (and will

probably find room this summer for the other two!)

like SUNSHINE like SHADE

6 Helleborus (Hellebore). These bloom in many

colors AND

love the

shade.

7 Clematis “Rooguchi.” This

deep purple, bell-shaped

flower blooms all summer.

8 Geranium “Rozanne” (Perennial geranium)

Purple flowers bloom all summer.

No deadheading needed.

9 Ceratostigma plumbaginoides

(Perennial plumbago). Indigo

blue flowers in the summer and

bronze-reddish foliage in the fall

10 Hydrangea “Twist-n-Shout.” Unusual lace

cap flowers bloom all summer

and have red fall foliage

1 Buddleia “Lo and Behold” (Butterfly bush). It blooms

constantly without deadheading.

2 Echinacea “Magnus Superior” (Coneflower).

These striking pink blooms have a uniform growth habit.

3 Heliopsis “Tuscan Sun” (Ox-eye daisy). This yellow

stunner blooms all summer.

4 Phlox “David” (Tall garden phlox). These

pure white blooms require little

maintenance to keep blooming.

5 Rudbeckia “Indian Summer” (Black-eyed

Susan). This plant will “wow” you

with clear, large yellow petals.

Spring Cleaning

Sometimes spring cleaning needs to be

done below the surface, too. It’s important

to remember to take care of all the spaces

in your home, even those that no one

sees — your crawl space being a prime

example. According to Dave Thompson,

Marketing Director of Woods Basement

Systems, it’s essential that homeowners seal

their crawl spaces in a way that will keep

exterior air out. While this advice is espe-

cially pertinent in spring due to moisture in

the air that helps mold thrive, sealing your

crawl space properly will also make your

home more energy-efficient by reducing

costly air conditioning bills in the summer

and heating bills in the winter.

When mold spores enter a home’s

crawl space, it can make for quite the

smelly situation, not to mention an allergy

sufferer’s worst nightmare. Under the

right temperatures and conditions, the

mold will flourish, causing pungent air

to circulate throughout the entire house.

Mold can also attach to the exposed wood

structure of your home, causing what is

commonly referred to as “wood rot.”

To solve this problem, Woods Basement

Systems uses a double vapor barrier, which

covers the exposed earth within a crawl

space and air-seals any penetrations to

the outside and sub-floor. This prevents

the negative effects of a dirt crawl space

from rising up into the home. Even vertical

foundation walls made of concrete block,

brick or stone can be porous, Dave explains,

as moisture can be absorbed easily through

mortar. A two-step approach that includes

air sealing and encapsulating the crawl

space can help ensure that your crawl

space — and home — remain air-tight

and mold-free.

SEALING YOUR CRAWL SPACE PROPERLY MAKES YOUR HOME MORE ENERGYEFFICIENT BY REDUCING COSTLY BILLS IN THE SUMMER AND WINTER.

The all-too-familiar term “spring cleaning” often entails more than just organizing your

spaces — in fact, it frequently calls for scrubbing, cleansing, wiping, dusting and polishing every

surface in your home until it shines like new. Unfortunately for many of us, this conjures

up unpleasant thoughts of harsh chemical fumes and residue — but all of that is about to

change. Green Works®, a line of eco-friendly cleaning products created by the experts at Clorox,

can help you achieve a spotless home naturally, with plant- and mineral-based ingredients.

The Natural Products Association (NPA) recently developed the Natural Standard for Home

Care Products, and five Green Works® products have already met the core criteria: Green Works®

all-purpose cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, bathroom cleaner, glass and surface cleaner, and glass

cleaner. To be certified, these products must be at least 95-percent natural (excluding water)

and meet the following criteria: manufactured in a certain manner, using biodegradable

ingredients with environmentally sustainable packaging whenever possible; use no animal

testing during the development process; and use no ingredients from the NPA’s list of

prohibited ingredients. All Green Works® products are 95- to 99-percent naturally derived,

including filtered water, coconut-based cleaning agents, essential oils, corn-based ethanol

and wood-based fibers.

Green Works® products are available at your local grocer or drugstore. For a list of retailers, visit www.greenworkscleaners.com/where-to-buy.

SETTING STANDARDS

An estimated 40 million Americans suffer from indoor/outdoor allergies.*40

Does your spring cleaning to-do list include one or two home improvement projects this

year? If so, consider updating your home’s floors with a stylish and sustainable option, such

as bamboo or cork. Not only will this enhance your home’s beauty and increase its value,

it could even alleviate some of your family’s allergy problems. According to the Asthma

and Allergy Foundation of America, an estimated 40 million Americans suffer from indoor/

outdoor allergies.

“Bamboo, like any hard surface, is always more hypoallergenic than carpeting,” explains Rich

Olson, owner of Just Around The Corner. “Dust particles and other allergens are impossible

to remove completely from the lower parts of carpet and, below that, at the pad level.” And

because bamboo is finished with a special urethane coating, it’s remarkably easy to clean.

One of the world’s fastest growing plants, bamboo is a natural front-runner in the field

of eco-friendly flooring. “Bamboo plants grow to maturity in slightly more than five years,”

says Rich. “If you compare that to the several decades required to grow average hardwoods,

bamboo reigns supreme in eco-friendly status.”

And it’s durable, too. “Although it is classified as a grass, bamboo is extremely durable,” he

adds. “In fact, stranded bamboo, the latest addition to our bamboo lines, is ranked two to

three times harder than ever-popular oak and adds texture to the traditional vertical and

horizontal grains that are characteristic of bamboo flooring.” Even better, bamboo flooring

is available in a variety of colors that easily match any home’s décor.

According to David Fox, owner of DyeMasters Flooring Co., cork is another option in eco-

friendly flooring on the market today, although it has been around for hundreds of years.

“Cork is obtained from the bark of a tree every nine to 11 years,” he explains, “so the trees

are not actually cut down.” In addition to being durable and easy to clean, cork floors are

mold- and mildew-resistant, which will definitely aid in allergy relief. Even more, cork floors

repel insects, which every homeowner likes to hear. Like bamboo floors, which DyeMasters

also offers, cork floors come in many different colors, so they can be easily incorporated into

both traditional and contemporary spaces.

A PERSONAL RETREAT SHOWERS A YOUNG COUPLE WITH MEMORIES

OF THE CARIBBEAN

Private Paradise

Imagine blue skies above as the sun warms your back and a fresh stream of water

washes away all the stresses of the day. Sound dreamy? It’s actually a dream come true

for a young couple who decided to bring a dose of the tropics back home. “We have

taken several trips to the Caribbean,” say the homeowners, “and have always loved the

luxury of an outdoor shower.”

So, when they decided to build a new home, they were sure that an open-air shower

would just have to be part of the plan. Located directly off their master bathroom,

the homeowners’ “little bit of heaven” is reminiscent of the showers found in some

of the finest Caribbean resorts. Enclosed in stone walls that are just high enough and

dripping with pink bougainvillea, this small but splendid space is indeed a peaceful

sanctuary. “It’s our favorite ‘room,’” say the homeowners. No kids. No dog. Just total

relaxation. Now that’s Paradise!

“It’s our favorite ‘ room’”— homeowners.

62 APRIL 2011 STLOUISHOMESMAG.COM

CHALLENGE: To transform and incorporate an uninspiring kitchen

misfi t into an integral part of a stunning great room.

SOLUTION: Sitting majestically on a bluff overlooking the Meramec

River in Eureka is a gorgeous home that truly takes advantage of the

beautiful view. Floor-to-ceiling windows capture the wonder of

the natural vista and wrap the stunning great room in light. When

homeowners Amy and Dan Thompson fi rst walked through the doors

of this spectacular residence, they were awestruck. And then they saw

the kitchen.

Haphazardly “attached” to this glorious great room was a stark

white space that stuck out like a sore thumb. White laminate cabinets

and counters seemed to say “why me?” The disconnect between the

kitchen and the great room was so severe that the homeowners knew

something had to be done right away. “We loved the house, but not

the kitchen,” say Amy and Dan. “It just wasn’t us at all.”

Luckily, Nettie White of Nettie White Interiors and her talented team

knew just what to do. Nettie, who specializes in unbelievable paint

transformations, had a clear vision of what the kitchen could be.

“We did not get rid of the original cabinets,” says Nettie, “however, using

only paint techniques, we completely changed the look.” What was

once a glaring, misplaced beacon is now a polished gathering area,

with the panache of a grand hotel lobby bar, that fl ows eff ortlessly

from the great room.

Dressed in a warm espresso fi nish, the once nondescript white

laminate cabinets are now character-rich. A special “crocodile” paint

technique on the inset panels of the lower cabinets adds an un-

expected and interesting touch to this “club-like” kitchen.

“Nettie worked wonders on our kitchen” says Dan. “We love to

entertain, and now we have the perfect spot to do that. Amy and I have

always thought that you buy a house, and then you create a home.

Nettie helped us do just that.” See page 70 for design resources.
