Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, (1873-1950), notable for his infl uence on modern architecture in the United States, stated, “Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context - a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.”

I’ve thought about that statement quite a bit lately while working on our marvelous March issue with its modern perspective, and it’s

prompted me to look at things a little differently. I’ve thought about singular items – a vintage chair, an

incredible piece of art, or an amazing chandelier, and I think of the space where it will fi nd its home, the room where people will enjoy its beauty, the surrounding vista, sprinkled with color and life, and so on. It’s been a fun journey – thinking of design in the broader context.

My viewpoint has expanded (happily) with an appreciation for the artist or designer who was inspired to paint, build, create and add beauty to the world with his or her singular idea or contribution.

In this issue, we invite you to peruse the modern décor-fi lled pages of Obsession (pages 16 & 18), where we discovered furnishings in local shops and showrooms that spoke to us with their originality, timelessness, and in many cases, their sparkle.

Our featured urban home (pages 32 – 39) is a masterpiece in itself, though each singular piece is one that lives large with its contribution to its surroundings. The art-fi lled urban condo, with its mid-century to modern décor, looks out onto a breathtaking landscape, and again, fabulous furnishings and spaces live superbly within the context of the city.

DESIGNER Q+ACan you share any new lighting trends for 2010? Our industry continues to introduce cutting-edge lighting fixture designs and products. The overwhelming idea is the use of LED in the lighting industry to produce a sustainable lighting product that uses less power consumption and is eco-friendly.

In terms of lighting that would enhance a space with a modern aesthetic, what comes to mind? The lighting must be very clean and soothing in terms of design – using interesting yet simple pendants in a kitchen and sconces in a bath, for example, with some recessed lighting to add impact.

How do you collaborate with your lighting clients? Under-standing the clients’ needs in regard to their project size and scope is of utmost importance to me, as well as working with the

I work with my clients to analyze how lighting in each of their spaces will emphasize and impact the mood and function of each room. Lighting plans include technically oriented considerations for spaces such as task areas where, as in all areas of the home, the amount of light and placement of light is of utmost importance.

What are some of your lighting tips for our readers? First, I would suggest that homeowners use a certified ALA lighting specialist. Secondly, be prepared with your questions and considerations that need to be accomplished in the project. Consider lighting as one of your most brilliant and important accessories within your home’s design.

of Missouri River Timber Company was a simple one – to offer the best in timber frame construction.

Although the business may still be in its youth, less than four years old, it nonetheless offers an experienced, talented and passionate crew. One may even say that Dave was born to do this kind of work. Since the age of 13, he has been in the construction business. “It’s pretty much all I know,” says Dave, the company’s president. “I’ve been in it my whole life.”

Dave grew up working on farms and observed how other companies rebuilt old farmhouse beams. Eventually, he decided to start his own company with a determination to produce the best in non-structural, real wood beams and give them an Old World look.

“There’s something remarkable about taking a brand new piece of wood and making it look like it’s 100 years old,” says Dave. He and his crew employ a seven-step finishing process, devoid of any machinery, to give the timbers the look of vintage construction.

The company uses reclaimed wood, cedar and pine, which are finished with water-based, eco-friendly indoor finishes. And because the hollow beams are roughly one-eighth the weight of a solid beam, “you don’t have to beef up the existing structure,” according to Dave. “The installation is easier on the crew.” Another added bonus: a proprietary glue makes nails obsolete in every finished beam. “Carpenters don’t have to worry about nails flying up and hitting them while they’re cutting,” says Dave.

When Lisa Davis and husband Jeff Davis, executive chef at Café Napoli in Clayton, decided to toss a small dinner party, March seemed the perfect time for this

talented couple to work their design and culinary magic. Lisa, an interior designer with Heirlooms in Clayton, let the

restaurant’s urbane ambience guide her streamlined design plan to complement Jeff ’s seasonally fresh, colorful and savory menu.

“Although Heirlooms is known for their classic and traditional home décor, we can spice up any setting with a look to suit your style,” says Lisa. For their chic party table, Lisa used color to make a statement with pops of bright raspberry and touches of plum, soft black and silvery metallics. The combination created a crisp backdrop for a visually fabulous array of seasonally fresh foods selected by Jeff for the occasion. Mirrored and sparkling accessories added an immediate, reflective quality to the setting.

With 15 years at the well-known Café Napoli Italiano Ristorante, Jeff takes pride in the quality and presentation of the foods he serves. And with fresh seafood delivered daily, along with magnificent fruits and vegetables, the outcome – enriched by Jeff ’s culinary passion – is simply splendid. Whether entertaining guests at the restaurant or at home, the variety of delicious dishes – such as the evening’s bacon-wrapped shrimp, smoked salmon farfalle and beef chateau brion – are prepared with skill.

“Olive oil wine sauces are a great substitute for heavier, cold weather sauces. An olive oil, garlic and white wine sauce is ideal, served with fresh herbs and fresh tomatoes for the transition into spring,” says Jeff. “All the ingredients must play a role to a T.” And for the finishing touch, Lisa suggests adding fresh flowers to any dining setting, reminding hostesses that they “add life to the table.”

luscious Tiramisu. “ It was very rewarding to see everyone’s positive reaction to the menu,” says Jeff.

To mark the memorable get-together, guests were treated to personalized parting gifts designed by Lisa. “This is a great way to let your friends know that you were thinking of them while you were planning the party and thank them for coming.”

client’s vision of a livable space – that was high on style – to life. “This homeowner desired a more traditional East Coast look that would set the stage for his prized artwork,” says Steve, “so we imbued the space with classic architectural details purposefully designed to enhance and not distract from each unique art piece. We also opened up the floor plan in the main living area to take full advantage of the magnificent views from the adjoining terrace. Once you take out walls, though, you have to define spaces, which we achieved by building columns and adding crown molding.”

The final result was a cosmopolitan condo befitting a spot on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Adorned in rich shades of cream, gold and brown, Steve chose a luscious Prussian blue as his accent. “Originally, I had wanted to do a very

T he only thing missing is the red carpet in this chic high-rise condominium in the Central West End’s prestigious Park East Tower. With sweeping penthouse

views of the cityscape and Forest Park’s natural splendor, this sophisticated space exudes classical elegance with a dash of vintage Hollywood and a sprinkling of savoir faire.

An avid collector of contemporary and pop art, as well as modern and mid-century furniture, the homeowner wanted a retreat that was tranquil yet inspiring – a soft-hued backdrop to showcase his passion for artistic excellence.

He enlisted the talents of interior designer Steve Toedebusch of Frank Patton Interiors as the first step in achieving the home of his dreams.

Starting from a blank canvas, Steve began to bring his


monochromatic, neutral palette,” says the homeowner, “but Steve convinced me that we really needed to add some color. He was right; the blue accents add depth and interest to each room.”

An elegantly appointed living room envelops you in its refined beauty, while a classically designed fireplace with Hollywood Regency flair heightens the drama of the sophisticated space. The adjacent dining room sparkles with a magnificent Murano glass chandelier hovering like a glistening tiara above a stunning walnut table.

Just down the hall and tailored to perfection, the elegant master bedroom evokes a feeling of old Hollywood glamour that is at once polished and luxurious. Soft draperies surround the room and superbly complete the exquisite space. Roommates Bunny and Bear, four year-old Pekinese cuties, are right at home on sumptuous mohair and chenille-covered chairs. These surprisingly pet-friendly fabrics were a must for the homeowner. “I wanted everything to be beautiful,” he says, “but I needed to be practical in my choices, as well. Steve was great at helping me strike just the right balance.”

Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a grand place to watch the world below. Careful not to distract from the outside vistas, Steve has expertly dressed the windows in understated drapery panels of silk, linen and cotton. “It’s all about the view in a high-rise,” the homeowner adds. “Even though I enjoy city life, it’s wonderfully relaxing and yet rejuvenating to watch nature unfold as the seasons change. It’s really the best of both worlds. And at night, even with the sheers closed, you can still see the city lights. It’s very romantic.”

Fabric and grasscloth wallcoverings by Ralph Lauren and Kravet are seen throughout

the condo. A signature look for Steve, he feels that fabric wallcoverings add an extra special touch, especially for new construction. “They give the space a sense of age,” he says, “more so than paint alone. Plus, they absorb sound, helping to create a quieter, more intimate atmosphere.”

The homeowner’s fascination with mid-century furniture design is evident everywhere you look, with modern marvels thoughtfully chosen to enhance his living space.

Starring roles are played by a vintage 1950s classic Hans Wegner-designed chair that sits regally in a corner of the homeowner’s office and two spectacular 1940s Murano glass lamps that he proudly displays in his guest room. “I love Murano glass,” he says. “These two lamps were purchased at Rothschild’s Antiques here in the Central West End. It is very unusual to find lamps this old without any chips in them. I was excited because these were in pristine condition.”

Not to be upstaged by this wonderful assembly of mid-century beauty, the homeowner has amassed amazing

artworks that provide visual punch and literally make his home come alive. “I love to collect contemporary and pop art,” says the homeowner, whose beautiful condo is lavished with an incredible collection that includes the “Cosmic ’60s” iconic art style of Peter Max; the brightly colored whimsical pop art of Charles E. Houska; and the illusionary optical or “Op Art” of local artist Charles Blood. Also on display is the eye-popping “Cereal Box” series by Burton Morris.

The owner’s collection is a showcase of media, including an explosion of color in paintings by Mark Weber and Michael Hoffman. The display also presents the arresting works of laser-cut steel by Bernard Collin, imposing bronze sculptures by Tom Corbin, the unique stainless steel sculptures of Luis Efe Velez, the striking metal sculptures of Curtis Jere, and the playful artistry of Jeff Koons. An exciting juxtaposition against the home’s serene background, this dynamic array of artistic expression is positively dazzling.

Layering fabrics on windows helps to control light and temperature.

Figuring out your lighting plan is crucial when designing your space. It helps so much to know exactly where to put outlets so as to best highlight artwork and other special pieces.

In homes with a modern perspective, drapery is best hidden behind woodwork to give a streamlined and clean appearance. (Air conditioning vents and heat registers can also be hidden in the woodwork so they are as inconspicuous as possible.)

Using a combination of brushed and polished nickel hardware adds interest. Plus, over time, nickel develops a nice patina, aging beautifully like silver.

Painting the ceilings the same color as the walls lowers them and tends to warm up a space and make it cozier.

A glorious spring garden beckons a second look.

“Have you seen Karen Collins’ tulips?” The question, part of an overheard snippet of conversation

between two friends who live in Glendale, was posed with an undertone of awe on a lovely spring day.

Not even slightly embarrassed to be eavesdropping, I immediately jumped into the exchange. Garden writers are always on the trail of spectacular floral displays. In addition, I felt certain the Karen Collins of legendary tulips had to be the same Karen Collins I knew through her volunteer work at the

Missouri Botanical Garden and as a gardening expert employed at Kirkwood’s Sugar Creek Gardens.

My friends passed along the exact location of this spring flower show, and minutes later I was in the car to see it for myself. There was no need for a street address; Karen Collins’ tulips, on display amidst equally stunning daffodils, flowering trees and birdhouses, shone from two blocks away.

The beauty that surrounds her brick Cape Cod residence each spring is the only reward Karen needs for the hours spent for

the past 15 falls planting a total of over 10,000 bulbs. She relishes the delight of her neighbors and those who seek out her garden as their own particular spring tonic. “I had a man stop and tell me that my house is not on his regular route to work, but he always goes out of his way to drive by my yard in the spring,” Karen recalls.

Karen has been gardening at her Glendale home for more than 28 years and has gradually transformed a yard that contained “only one great big yew” into a showplace. She credits her mother for her fascination with bulbs. “They were always my mother’s favorites, but she didn’t plant them to the extent that I’ve done; I’ve gone overboard,” Karen says with a laugh, estimating that she plants between 700 and 800 bulbs every fall.

She credits an unknown gardener in Webster Groves with her penchant for birdhouses. “I saw all these birdhouses in a garden in Webster, and I drove my husband (the late Tom Collins) over to see them,” she recalls. “I said, ‘I have to do that.’ They add so much to a garden.”

There’s also a story about the gnomes peeking out from various locations in Karen’s garden. “When we were first married, we lived on Couch Avenue in Kirkwood,” Karen recounts. “The

lady who lived across the street, Celeste Holmes, was an avid gardener. She was a wonderful Southern lady who always wore earrings, beautiful hats and makeup when she gardened. She willed her garden gnomes to me. My favorite is the one reading the book.”

WHAT GOES INTO CREATING THE KAREN COLLINS LOOK? Karen selects bulbs with a variety of bloom times to ensure a floral display

that begins in early April and continues into May. While daffodils will naturalize and return year after year, tulips need to

be replanted each year to ensure a dramatic display. For the past few years, Karen has concentrated on a vibrant mix of Impression tulips, a vigorous Darwin hybrid with immense goblet-shaped flowers. Rather than using a bulb planter, Karen digs a broad hole, lines it with

compost, and plants a cluster of seven to nine bulbs at a time. She

fertilizes with Bulb Booster in the fall and in the spring once bulbs have fl owered.As a guide to where to plant each fall, “I plant Muscari armeniacum, a cobalt blue

grape hyacinth that blooms in April and May, with each group of daffodils and tulips. The foliage of this particular grape hyacinth reappears in the fall, a signal to me when planting new bulbs, ‘Don’t plant here.’”

Don’t be afraid to plant bulbs in shady areas; bulbs bloom before the trees leaf out.

Breathing RoomA Eureka couple builds their dream home with a green frame of mind.

For Eureka homeowners, Scott and Martha, the “livin’ is easy.” And as it turns out, it’s easy “livin’ green.” The dream home that the couple built upon an impressive Missouri hilltop is truly a sanctuary of the most sustainable kind. “Being eco-friendly is very important to us,” they say. “We looked for a new home for several years, but nothing really spoke to our love and respect for the environment. When we walked onto this property, however, we knew this was where we needed to be. It’s like living on top of the world; your own little piece of heaven. It’s perfect for us, and we’ve done our best to make the inside as great a testament to nature as the outside is.”

The house, which was partially built but had languished for many months, needed a family to finish it and make it into a

home. “It really was quite a reclamation project,” says Scott. “The house was in terrible shape, with no roof and walls only up one story. There was even a flock of pigeons living in the basement.” With the expertise of architect Jeannie Brendel of Brendel Architects, located in Albers, Illinois, and custom green builder William Burkey of Automated Land Development, the magic began that would transform a shell of a house into the magnificent eco-manor that it is today.

Gracefully keeping watch over the town below, this grand home is built high on a hill with sweeping views that remind one of being in the country. Livestock graze, wild grasses blow in the wind, and the river ebbs and flows. It’s easy to forget you’re only 45 miles southwest of St. Louis City.

That peaceful feeling is what Scott and Martha have successfully translated into an environmentally conscious way of life. “We use every room in this house,” say the homeowners, “so these rooms have to work efficiently for us all the time.” To this end, they installed Andersen Series 400 Low-E4 sun-tempered windows and glass doors throughout and chose only ENERGY STAR® appliances. They also installed two Aprilaire® Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) that exchange the air inside their home with fresh outdoor air every 24 hours. “The air can get stale in a well-insulated home,” says Scott. “These ventilators are great for allergy sufferers. By replacing the air every day, you always have clean air to breathe.” An ERV is also extremely energy efficient. In the winter months, the exclusive EnergyMax® Transfer Core uses the heat of the indoor air to warm the incoming cold fresh air, recovering approximately 77 percent of the energy.

“We also use two Laing Autocirc Under-Sink Instant Hot Water Pumps,” says Scott. These revolutionary pumps work with standard and tankless heaters, delivering instant hot water to every faucet in the house. According to the company, a family of four can save up to 46 gallons of water a day. Programmable timers built into the pumps allow them to run only when needed.

The actual construction of the house is an eco-conscious venture in itself. Built using LOGIX® Insulated Concrete Forms, Scott and Martha’s dream home is the picture of efficiency. Based on the simple concept of stackable interlocking blocks made from expanded polystyrene (a substance similar to Styrofoam™), each block is vertically reinforced with steel and filled with concrete providing a highly insulated wall system. Built to last for centuries, LOGIX® walls, which incorporate recycled materials, are reported to be more than eight times stronger than conventional wood-framed walls and are airtight and mold resistant.

One of the most uniquely green parts of the home is a pneumatic


vacuum elevator from Elevated Technologies, Inc. designed to operate using air and gravity. Vacuum pumps or turbines use air to pull the elevator car up to the desired floor, where an anchoring system locks the car into place. Then, the slow release of air pressure floats the car down again.

It seems Scott and Martha thought of just about everything when designing and finishing their house on the hill. “It’s so important not to waste,” they say. “We didn’t even scrap the leftover granite from our kitchen countertops. We repurposed them for our window sills.”

Surely this home and its lucky owners are perfectly in tune with the nature that surrounds them. Scott and Martha have found their little piece of heaven right there on top of the hill, where “giving back” is a way of life.

A new home in one of Clayton’s National Register Historic Districts features a unique “twisted spiral” chimney designed by architect Lauren Strutman, president of Lauren Strutman Architects, P.C.The very distinctive detailing of the spiral chimney mirrors the character of the neighboring historic homes.

Texture and pattern contrast were achieved by combining brick, tumbled limestone and a smooth clay chimney pot. (Tumbling is a mechanical process that makes the stone surfaces irregular, subtly creating a worn, charming appearance.) The extraordinary corkscrew shape of the chimney draws the eye to its unique design.

“It was important for the home to be compatible with its historic surroundings,” says Lauren. The owners wanted a new home with Old World charm, suitable for the neighborhood. Original homes in the district, c. 1910 -1930, are period homes, and their design suggests earlier styles, including Medieval, Tudor, Regency, Georgian and Colonial Revival.

Sturdy construction, high-quality craftsmanship, diverse textures and handsome details are among the character-defining elements that this architecturally novel chimney shares with the area’s original, meticulously designed and elegantly proportioned residences.

CHALLENGE: To transform a crowded, outdated kitchen into a family-friendly gathering space.

SOLUTION: Desiring an updated kitchen that would balance form with function, homeowner Mary Jo Welch contacted Fred Bueler of Bueler, Inc. to design a well-planned space that could accommodate multiple cooks. “I have three daughters who like to help in the kitchen, and I wanted to create a place where we could interact together,” says Mary Jo.

An extensive first-floor addition expanded the kitchen by approximately 200 square feet, which allowed for a larger breakfast room and the installation of a wet bar and additional built-in cabinetry. Fred’s design also included an island that seats four and abundant countertop space to ensure that Mary Jo

and her daughters could work side-by-side with ease. “Now we spend far more time in the kitchen than we ever did before,” says Mary Jo, crediting its thoughtful design elements and natural flow.

Interior designer Melissa Buckley of Frank Patton Interiors chose warm, welcoming hues to tie the room together, such as those found in the golden-toned Juparana Cascadura granite countertops, sandalwood maple cabinets with a mocha glaze, and blended oak floors. Finishing touches, such as an eye-catching Daltile backsplash, decorative pendant lights and sleek stainless steel appliances, complete the overall look.

The spacious new kitchen serves as a perfect place for hosting get-togethers, too. “I’ve had several parties since the renovation,” says Mary Jo, “and it’s true that people love to gather in the kitchen.”
