LITURGY OF THE DAY When we gather together as a faith community to give glory to God, we expect that our expe-rience will be similar to what it was the week before, or the week before that. Most likely this is how the faithful of Nazareth felt when

they went to synagogue. Then one day, Jesus, son of Mary, a carpenter whom some may have known when he was just a boy, stood up to preach. Unlike the crowd in today’s Gospel, may we be open to the Word of God entering in unexpected ways.

LITURGIA DEL DÍA

Cuando nos reunimos como comunidad de fe para dar gloria a Dios tenemos la expectativa de que nuestra experiencia sea simi-lar a la de la semana pasada o de alguna otra semana anterior. Lo más probable es que así se sintieran los creyentes de Nazaret cuando iban a la sinagoga. Entonces un día Jesús, el hijo de Ma-ría, un carpintero que algunos seguro conocían desde que era niño, se levanta a predicar. No seamos nosotros igual que la mul-titud en el Evangelio de hoy, sino que más bien estemos abiertos a recibir la palabra de Dios que llega de maneras inesperadas.

The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the jour-ney of faith. So often we experience weakness on this jour-ney. Capital Campaign Announcement (V) Next weekend will mark the official start for the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign at St. Lawrence. This major fundraising effort will address our parish needs (enclose the pavilion to make it a large meet-ing room, renovate the day care and improve the sound system in the church), and archdiocesan needs including seed money for the establishment of new parishes in areas of growth, funds in support of the social services Catholic Charities renders to over 230,000 people a year, the establishment of a pilgrimage cen-ter at Mission Concepcion, support for lay ministry formation, the modernization of Assumption Seminary to

support priestly formation, the renovation of Catholic Schools across the archdiocese, and strengthening Campus Ministry at Texas A&M San Antonio and UTSA. The preparation phase of the capital campaign began last fall. The Archbishop and a leadership team of campaign general chairs have been meeting with major gift donors for the last several months to provide the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign with momentum. As we join other parishes in participating in the pilot wave of this important effort, it is with great joy that we report the campaign has already secured gifts and pledges totaling more than 30,000 pledges! It is now our turn to continue the great momentum they started. We will be officially kicking off the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign at all Masses next weekend of July 14th & 15th. It is an exciting time to be a Catholic in South Central Texas!

Éste gran esfuerzo de recaudación de fondos atenderá nuestras necesidades parroquiales (cerrar el pabellón para convertirlo en una gran sala de reuniones, renovar la guardería, y mejorar el sistema de sonido en la iglesia), y las necesidades ar-quidiocesanas, incluyendo fondos para el establecimiento de nuevas parroquias en áreas de crecimiento, fondos para el apoyo de los servicios sociales que Caridades Católicas ofrece a mas de 230,000 personas al año, el establecimiento de un centro de peregrinación en la Misión Concepción, apoyo para la formación de ministros laicos, la modernización del Seminario de la Asunción para el apoyo de la formación sacerdotal, la renovación de las Escuelas Católicas alrededor de la Arquidiócesis, y el fortalecimiento del Ministerio Universitario en Texas A&M San Antonio y UTSA. La fase preparativa de la campaña capital comenzó el otoño pasado. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Santa María Goretti nació en 1890 en Italia. Su padre, campesino, enfermó de malaria y murió. Una tarde, María estaba sentada en lo alto de la escalera de la casa, remendando una camisa. Aun-que aún no cumplía los doce años, era ya una mu-jercita. Alejandro, un joven de 18 años, subió las escaleras con intención de violar a la niña. María opuso resistencia y trató de pedir auxilio; pero co-

mo Alejandro la tenía agarrada por el cuello, apenas pudo protes-tar y decir que prefería morir antes que ofender a Dios. Al oír esto, el joven desgarró el vestido de la muchacha y la apuñaló brutalmente. Ella cayó al suelo pidiendo ayuda y él huyó. María fue transportada a un hospital, en donde perdonó a su asesino de todo corazón, invocó a la Virgen y murió veinticuatro horas des-pués. Alejandro fue condenado a 30 años de prisión. Por largo tiempo, fue obstinado en no arrepentirse de su pecado, hasta que una noche, tuvo un sueño en el que vio a la niña María, recogien-do flores en un prado y luego ella se acercaba a él y se las ofre-cía. A partir de ese momento, cambió totalmente y se convirtió en un prisionero ejemplar. En 1947, el Papa Pío XII la beatificó y en 1950 la canonizó. En la ceremonia estuvieron presentes su madre, de 82 años, dos hermanas y un hermano. También asistió Alejandro, el arrepentido asesino de la santa. (©Catholic Net).
