Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrow-ful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Just before our first reading it says that "the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many vi-sions." (1Sam 3:1) I imagine most people today would think that was true. Do you think God has stopped talking? People apparently felt that way in Samuel's time. Let's look at the reading to see what Samuel's experience can teach us. At first Samuel thinks it is Eli calling him. It is not unusual for people to miss a sign from God. If you have a talent that you are proud of, per-haps it is a sign that God wants you to use that talent to help others. Or if a friend tells you she is concerned about your health, it could be God's way of telling you to get help. Try to see God speaking in what-ever happens to you and you may hear a lot more than you think. Samuel also gets help from Eli. Eli began to recognize that the LORD was speaking to Samuel. Sometimes we need help discerning what the Lord is telling us. A good spiritual director can help. He or she will probably ask how often you pray. In our reading Samuel finally speaks directly to God, instead of going back to Eli. So if you wonder what God plans for your life, try spending more time in prayer with him. I bet we have all had times where we didn't know if we are doing God's will because we didn't take time to pray. But don't do all the talking. Give God some quiet time to hear his response. For God hasn't stopped talking; we just stopped listening. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Religious Education School News

Kid’s Corner

First Reconciliation will be held on Wednesday, January 17th, 2018, at 6:15 pm. Students and families, please arrive to the Church by 6 pm.

While the temps have been chilly, the ener-gy in our building that has come from a shared effort to save our school has creat-ed warmth that can only be attributed to God’s love of St. Laurence! Last week, we shared pictures of the start of our newly decorated kitchen area. Since then, the hallways and stairwells have received a bright, happy makeover. The goal is to have the school ready for our Open House “Move that Bus” Extreme Makeover reveal the Sunday before Catholic School’s Week. Stay tuned for more information about the events taking place the week of January 27th-February 3rd. Catholic School’s Week is a national celebration of all that is won-derful about our Catholic Schools.

Our Preserving the Legacy committees have been working diligently. Some high-lights include events planned to get the word out including participation in the Gail Borden Preschool Fair and a table at the Centre of Elgin on February 10th. New mar-keting materials have been created, the website continues to improve each day, and the social media outreach continues to expand to other domains! Events are being planned including a dinner dance held offsite to raise funds for our Save the School fund. Our Classroom committee has been working on additional offerings outside of the classroom including STEM camps, a monthly Community Life Program that invites people from various professions to share their profession with our students(Anderson Animal Shelter will be here in February and Mayor Dave Kaptain in March), and a school play in May…just to name a few. It’s such an exciting time to be a Tiger!

The Growth Mindset mantra this month is “Feedback is a gift…Accept it!” to promote students understanding of how to use critique as a tool to improve oneself. It is also an opportunity for us to use better forms of praise and critique. Check out our website for an explanation of this month’s theme!

In addition, we started our “Every Minute Counts” Zero Tardy Campaign this week to emphasize the importance of being on time because our goal, as always, is to do what is best for every student, every day. Re-search has shown that chronic tardiness leads to many problems down the road for students including low academic achievement and job loss to name a few.

Our students share a portion of the daily reading with a reflection each morning around 8 on Face-

book Live. Please tune in!

Hope everyone in our St. Laurence family has a wonderful week! ☺

Vocations Corner: MY Yoke is Easy

The most common reaction that we experience when we lose control of a situation is to have fear. The bigger the situation, the bigger the fear! This very same concept applies to allowing God to have control over our lives as well. Jesus knows this however, which is why He calms us and gives us peace by saying “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” This passage is very comforting if we think about what a yoke is. At first glance this might not make sense because a yoke is the tool of burden that oxen wear in order to plow a field. . . it means hard work! But it takes on a different light when we come to realize that most yokes are made not for one but for two oxen who will pull the load side by side. So, when Jesus tells us that the way to find peace and rest is to carry HIS yoke, He isn’t simply asking us to do hard work for Him. Rather, He is asking us to work WITH Him, alongside Him. When we accept this fact and embrace the work that He invites us to, it is then that we will truly find rest for our souls.
