Lord, Hear our Prayer.

O St. Laurence, generous servant of the Church and deacon of God’s people, most loving patron of our parish, inspire our hearts with your total and courageous love for Christ. Encourage us, and intercede that we too give away our lives, little by little, toward the advancement of the Church’s mis-sion and the spiritual health of our parish. Help us not to fear the cost of discipleship, but focus with faith on the glorious effects of your grace in our lives. St. Laurence, pray for us!

Please Pray For:

We pray for the repose of the souls of

Pat Vallely, Mother of Kathy Castoro and

Carrie Finley, Daughter-in-law of Greg and Shar Huske

Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls, and the souls of all the faith-ful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to they protection, implored they help, or sought thy inter-cession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother, to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the word Incar-nate, despise not my petitions, but in they mercy hear and answer me.

This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Je-sus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his pro-phetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in wa-ter goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). School News - Mr. Manuel Cantu

A voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:17

Happy New Year Everyone from the St. Laurence School Staff and Students, Hoping everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We are all back to school, safe and sound. Many of the students were not ready to return while others were getting bored and missed their friends. We ended the year with our 6th-8th students singing Christ-mas Carols at the local senior retirement centers. The annual tradition was led by Ms. Turas and Ms. Trisilla. The annual Christmas Program was a tremendous success. “It was the best Program ever”, according to several parents. This year it was directed by Kin-dergarten Teacher, Lynette Reid. And of course, we cannot forget the Christmas Choir, led by Bill Lucas. His long-standing tradition continues to impress our Parishioners. Thank you, Bill, current students, and former students for your amazing talents. Congratula-tions to our Tiger Boys Basketball Team, as they won 3 games and lost one game during the break. The boys have made great strides since the beginning of the season under Coach Wesley Pierce. Looking ahead at January, Report Card Day for Quarter 2 is set for January 24 and Catholic Schools Week is scheduled for January 27th-February 1st. Several activities have been planned for that week. More information coming soon. Since we have been on holiday for the last 2 weeks, we had 3 weeks of Trifecta drawings this week. Congratulations to our winners:

It is fitting that on this final feast of the season of Christmas, we celebrate Jesus’ baptism, and with it our own entry into Christ’s life through the waters of baptism. During Christmas, we have reflected on the stunning recognition that God came to be one with us in Jesus Christ. Now, as we make the transition to Ordinary Time, we think about what it means to follow this same Christ, the Anointed One of God. In baptism, we too are anointed. Baptism plunges us into Christ’s death and res-urrection; in baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit. Baptism, which is available to all who believe, draws us to the very heart of God. In baptism, we become the servants of the Lord, chosen ones who are called for the victory of justice, a light for the nations. WHY ARE YOU COMING TO ME? We can almost hear the amazement in John the Baptist’s voice as he says to Jesus, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Throughout the time that John preached and baptized people in the desert, he had been preparing people for the coming of the Messiah. Now, Jesus approaches him for baptism! We might share in his wonder. Why would Jesus, who is sinless, come to John for a baptism of repentance? Jesus’ response to John helps us understand. Jesus has come to fulfill all that is expected in the Messiah, and more. As he entered the waters of baptism, Jesus entered fully into our humanity, raising us toward God. Jesus sanctified the waters of baptism, making them holy, opening the heavens through his humble obedience to God’s plan of love. CHRIST’S MISSION IS OUR MISSION As Jesus came out of the baptismal waters, the Holy Spirit descended upon him and a voice from the heavens was heard saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” In joining himself to humanity, Jesus opened the heav-ens for us, and in doing so, was confirmed in his mission of mercy and love. In bap-tism, we are joined with Christ. Immersed into his life and love, his mission is our mission. It is still early in this new year. Today, reflect on your baptismal call to live as a member of Christ’s body. In what ways do you love God and others? In what ways might you grow as a disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ? How are you living the mission of Christ, to make God’s love and mercy known in the world? Is Christ’s mission your mission?
