Lord, Hear our Prayer.

Back to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to ac-complish in school and in the workplace. It's a venerable Catholic cus-tom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physi-cians get Saint Luke. If you're stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cuperti-no is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you're in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new pat-ronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fel-low novices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us--nation, parish church, occupation, illness--can have a patron, and it is an as-pect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the "communion of saints" is to know that the ties that bind us as a com-munion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life's struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint? --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “Do this in memory of me.” And that’s exactly what we do at Mass each day. The priest takes unleavened wheat bread and grape wine – just as Jesus did – and says the words that Jesus said, “This is my body. This is my blood,” and the great miracle of the transubstantiation takes place. The ‘substance’ of the bread and the ‘substance’ of the wine is changed into the ‘substance’ of the Body and Blood of Christ. So the Church teaches that in the Eucharist, Jesus is really, truly, and substantially present, with His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. After pronouncing those words, the priest shows the Eucharist to the people. In some countries the faithful keep absolute reverential silence at this sacred moment; in other countries the faithful quietly proclaim the words of St. Thomas the Apostle, “My Lord and my God!” The server rings the bells and every-one knows that a great miracle has just taken place.

St. Laurence Sports Corner

School News - Wendy Kelly

It was another great week at St. Laurence! Our kindergarten class found their missing watermelon, 6th grade is working on a What If? project, 7th grade completed friendship essays, and many of our classes released the butterflies they’ve loved in their classrooms just to name a few. We held our Parent Information Night and would like to thank our parents for partnering with us to create a successful learn-ing experience for our students. The parents were introduced to the additions to our Discipline with Dignity approach to behavior as well as our new Attendance Success Plan to instill in all of our students the notion that Every Minute Counts. Our September Growth Mindset mantra is “Everyone Can Learn!” which is the basis of the idea that no matter where one is in terms of intellect and skill, with hard work and perseverance, we can all develop beyond that point. This theme permeates every aspect of our building to ensure that we are giving our students the tools to be successful beyond our walls. Next week, our teachers will spend the afternoon in an In-service designed to help them understand how to utilize our new Virtual Reality glasses in the classroom. These glasses have unlimited possibilities as they take students into places they would otherwise not have access to like inside the human heart, at the bottom of the ocean, in the trenches of war, etc. It is an exciting addition to our technology department. I will share many pictures in the weeks to come! I hope that each of the members of our parish community has a wonderful week! Wendy

Religious Education

Joe Bermea is being ordained on September 29, 2018 into the Permanent Diaconate in the Rockford Diocese. A celebration lunch will be held on Septem-ber 30, 2018 after the 11:00 mass. There will be signup for RSVP and a dish to pass available begin-ning this weekend.

Please join us September 14th at 7:00 pm. We will be offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the healing of all who have suffered and been affected by the abuse of power from clergy.

Prescient words from Fr. Joseph Ratzinger written 50 years ago in his book, Introduction to Christianity, but so applicable today: "He [Christ] has drawn sin to himself, made it his lot, and so revealed what true “holiness” is: not separation, but union; not judgment, but redeeming love. Is the Church not simply the continuation of God’s deliberate plunge into human wretchedness; is she not simply the con-tinuation of Jesus’ habit of sitting at the table with sinners, of his min-gling with the misery of sin to the point where he actually seems to sink under its weight? is there not revealed in the unholy holiness of the Church, as opposed to man’s expectation of purity, God’s true holiness, which is love, love that does not keep its distance in a sort of aristocrat-ic, untouchable purity but mixes with the dirt of the world, in order thus to overcome it? Can, therefore, the holiness of the Church be anything else but the bearing with one another that comes, of course, from the fact that all of us are borne up by Christ? At bottom there is always hidden pride at work when criticism of the Church adopts that tone of rancorous bitterness which today is already beginning to become a fashionable habit. Unfortunately it is accompa-nied only too often by a spiritual emptiness in which the specific nature of the Church as a whole is no longer seen, in which she is only regard-ed as a political instrument whose organization is felt to be pitiable or brutal, as if the real function of the Church did not lie beyond organiza-tion, in the comfort of the Word and of the sacraments that she provides in good and bad days alike. Those who really believe do not attribute too much importance to the struggle for the reform of ecclesiastical structures. They live on what the Church always is; and if one wants to know what the Church really is one must go to them. For the Church is most present, not where organizing, reforming, and governing are going on, but in those who simply believe and receive from her the gift of faith that is life to them. Only someone who has experienced how, regard-less of changes in her ministers and forms, the Church raises men up, gives them a home and a hope, a home that is hope - the path to eter-nal life - only someone who has experienced this knows what the Church is, both in days gone by and now."

Be strong, fear not In our first reading from the Prophet Isaiah this weekend, God has a message for those who are fearful. he says. God our Fa-ther always encourages us to trust in Him and to not let fear get in the way of our mission. At its core, fear is a sense of isola-tion. When we are afraid, ultimately, we are feeling alone and helpless. It is through that fear that we lose our hope, and when our hope is gone we lose our peace as well. Without that interior peace, it is tough to the disciples that Jesus calls us to be. Therefore, we need to do our best to always be strong and fear not! God does not call us to be timid in our vocations, but rather to be courageous. Be bold in the way that you surrender your life to Jesus Christ. Hold nothing back! With your fearless heart, Jesus will be able to mold you into a true disciple and do great things in your life. Place all of your hope and trust in God and see what incredible deeds He wants to work through you.
