TREASURES from our TRADITION
Friday’s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday’s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgi-cal readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus’ saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the “Day of the Dead.” Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, princi-pally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary des-serts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a pro-cession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or “bread of the dead.” A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is consid-ered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. We have open dates for Altar flowers. You can honor or remember a loved one and beautify our Masses.
Please join us for our annual Memorial Mass Saturday, November 2 at 9am. This mass is for parishioners and their family who have lost loved ones in the past year. It is a special time when the parish and family members come together to pray for the dead and for the comfort of remembrance. Even if you have not recently had a death in your family, come and join us in praying for those who have lost a loved one this year.
SAVE the DATE. The Knights of Columbus will be at St. Laurence Parish selling Christmas Cards during the weekend of November 2-3, 2019. Please support our Knights.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION for children grades Kinder-garten through eighth grade runs from mid-September to early May. We currently need several more adults to function as AIDES or SUBSTITUTES. Please consider whether this is a ministry to which you are called to serve. (Completion of diocesan volunteering forms is required.) To volunteer or to investigate this ministry, contact Thomas O'Leary 815-914-7333, the parish office, or visit during classes.
The wait is over! You are welcome to stop by the Parish office to pick up your copy of the Parish Directory at any time. Remember, only those whose picture appear in the directory will receive a copy.
We have received a call from a parishioner who lives on the east side of town who is hoping to find a ride to Mass. She has no preference as to a particular Mass time; she is unable to drive herself. If you think you might be able to provide her with assistance, please call the office for more information. Thank you for your consideration.

O St. Laurence, generous servant of the Church and deacon of God’s people, most lov-ing patron of our parish, inspire our hearts with your total and courageous love for Christ. Encour-age us, and intercede that we too give away our lives, little by little, toward the advancement of the Church’s mission and the spiritual health of our parish. Help us not to fear the cost of discipleship, but focus with faith on the glorious effects of your grace in our lives. St. Laurence, pray for us!

The Heavenly Dusters, a group of dedicated parishioners who serve our Parish by cleaning the Church every week, is asking for volunteers to help with their efforts. The group meets every Friday, immediately following the 8 am morning Mass to dust, vacuum, polish, sweep, etc. so that we enjoy a clean and tidy worship space for our weekend Liturgies. The Heavenly Dusters reduce our parish’s opera-tional expenses by thousands of dollars per year and we are most thankful for their sacrifice. However, as the saying goes, “Many hands make light work.”. Are you available for 1 hour per week on Friday mornings? If so, your help would be most welcome. Contact the parish office @ 847-468-6900 for more information.
RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into relation-ship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
