    Lord, Hear our Prayer.

    Mass Intentions October 22-28

Rosaries for the Church and our Nation will be prayed in front of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe by the St. Laurence church office. If you haven’t been able to do this, please consider joining us on Saturday, October 27 at 2:30 pm.

As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase “the Catholic vote” is heard. It’s an interesting concept, since Catholics start-ed out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by 1830. It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasion-al visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to “every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism.” Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacra-mental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in Eng-land had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. —Rev. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. Ministry

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS - Remember that each one of us have gifts that were given us by God. These gifts are unearned, undeserved, yet freely given. Please prayerfully consider your gifts and how you are being called to use them. We are in need of Eucharistic ministers. This ministry is a very special way to become more active in, and to help nourish our Parish Community. We are meant to give to and receive from one another. Please consider volunteering for 3 months at the Mass of your choice. Training is provided and scheduling is made around your availability. We especially need help at 4:00 PM Saturday and 7:15 AM. Sunday masses, but all masses are in need of extra people. Please contact Melanie Marcordes at melmarc814@gmail or (224) 639-0910 or Belinda Bermea at the office (847)468-6900 for more information.

ALTAR SERVERS - Altar servers are needed for the 6 PM Saturday mass and the 9 AM Sunday Mass. If you (or your student) are in grades 4 - 12, not already serving at masses and would like to volun-teer your time, please contact Jo Trisilla at [email protected].

LECTORS - The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to answer the weary a word that will waken them. (Isa 50:4) The role of the Lector is to inspire parishioners to listen to the Word of God. Do you have a love for the Word of God? Would you consider sharing that love with our parish as a Lector? We are looking for Lectors to serve at the 4:00 PM, 7:15 AM and 9:00 AM Masses. Please call the office @ 847-468-6900 for more information.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF CARE especially for nursing homes - Please consider joining us in this very rewarding opportunity in continuing to support the Catholic faith through administering Com-munion and providing conversations with our residents of local nursing homes. Contact Dee Reinhardt at 708-822-2152 for more information.

Please join the Vocation Ministry on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at the 11:00 AM Mass, Priesthood Sunday, in praying for our priests, praising God for their courage and their generosity. Also, please take a moment to fill out a spiritual bouquet card located in the Narthex, which is an offering of prayer for one or both of our priests. Let us show Fr. Andrew and Fr. Bob our encouragement and gratitude in thoughts and deeds. God bless our priests!

TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: “Too much information!” We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don’t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple ques-tion, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it’s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John’s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been “too much information” for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem “too much” for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to under-stand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

  • Praying the Rosary During Lent one year in high school, a good friend of mine asked me if I would be interested in praying the rosary each day during our lunch period. It wasn’t the most ideal, but we figured that if we prayed it relatively quickly we could finish it somewhere in the 12-15 minute range. Thus leaving at least 10 minutes to eat our meal. At the thought of it I felt overwhelmed but once we got a couple of days into the season, it started to become much more natural. More than that though, it was something I began looking forward to in the day! Up until that point I hadn’t really set apart much time to sit and pray in silence. As I look back at that Lent, I realize that Mary was nourishing the seed of my vocation and allowing it growth in my soul. But even more than that, I was giving God some solid time –in the mid-dle of my day- to begin a conversation about my life with Him. I encourage you, in this month dedicated to the rosary, to pray it and give God some time to speak to you and you to Him.

Let me comment on the “Sign of Peace”, which the reform of the Litur-gy of the Second Vatican Council recovered and inserted into this part of the Mass. Some think we should have the “sign of peace” at the beginning of the Mass so we can be more focused at this point on receiving Holy Communion. As it turns out, the ‘rubrics’ state that the priest says “The peace of the Lord be with you always” and the people respond, “And with your spirit.” But then the rubrics point out: “Then, if appropriate, the Deacon or the Priest, adds: ‘Let us offer each other a sign of peace.” So, it is not mandatory to have the sign of peace, and sometimes it is omitted at weekday Masses. For funerals and weddings and other very special occasions it is not uncommon that the exchange of a sign of peace takes longer and is more involved as the circumstances war-rant. The sign of peace that we exchange should be in keeping “with local custom … to express peace, communion, and charity.” Here in the USA the custom is a handshake. In other countries it is a smile, and in still other countries a hug. But the ‘sign of peace’ remains only a sign if there is not a deeper commitment to charity, love, and for-giveness of our neighbor.
