Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaid-ed. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word In-carnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

School News - Wendy Kelly

Kid’s Corner

Congratulations again to the St. Laurence Class of 2018! This week, their names were added to the long list of St. Laurence Tiger Alum! With that said, it is also appropriate to congratulate those of our alum that graduated this month from area high

schools and colleges! We are so proud of each and every one of our former students! One of the ways we focus on the individual development of our students is by extending learning beyond the class-room! Our students in preschool through 4th grade trav-elled back in time to Midway Museum in Rockford while our students in 7th and 8th grade went to Naper Settlement in Naperville. Through both field trips, history came alive for our students. As I mentioned last week, our 8th graders graduated this year, but not before taking their 8th grade trip to Chicago to enjoy pizza at Giordano’s before attending the Blue Man Group. It was a fun way to cap off a wonderful year! Registration is still open and I welcome the opportunity to share with families all that we have to offer through our school! I will be available throughout the summer and can be reached at (847)468-6100. I hope that everyone in our St. Laurence family has an awesome week! God Bless! Wendy

God calls by name Our name is something so important that when God calls, he does it by our name. We are so special that we are not called in a generic or group way, but we are called individually, personally. Our name is given by our parents because they have given us life. When we say our full name, we want to express who we are and where we come from. By saying "I am Gerardo Gomez", I am saying that my parents decided to give me that name, and that I belong to the Gomez family. And if I want to be more spe-cific I could include my first name, and my maternal surname to indicate more specifically where I come from and who I am. When I arrived in this country, Father Lavan asked me two questions: What is your name? and How do you want us to call you? The first question was easy, I told him my name is 'Manuel Gerardo Gomez Reza'; but the second question was more complicated to answer. Even though I was 26 years old, I was never asked before 'how do you want us to call you'. I answered I have two names and two surnames call me as you wish, or make the best com-bination out of them. Father Lavan answered I'm going to call you 'Manny', and from that moment on, I've been Manny. There is something inter-esting and important that each culture contributes to a better understanding of what our name represents. In the Hispanic culture Mom and Dad give you a name, but when you grow up friends or family give you some nickname, or some way to identify you, that they will use for the rest of your life. In the culture of this country also Mom and Dad give you a name at birth, but when you have the use of reason you can say how you want to be called. So, we discover, the name as something that we receive, but also as something that we decided to be, something that we em-brace. Something similar happens with our vocation, God calls us by our name and gives us a mission in life, but he respects our freedom. It is precisely in that freedom that we can choose to be what God wants from us or something different that may not lead us to happiness.

The Collect is also called the ‘Opening Prayer’ and it is the moment for all the faithful gathered at Mass to collect their thoughts and intentions for the Mass that has just begun. Accordingly, we pray in silence. That is the moment to silently tell God in our heart what we are praying for at Mass: family, friends, relatives, a child who is seriously ill, a new job, for vocations, the Pope, and upcoming elections … whatever. Since there is an infinite amount of grace available at each Mass, we can pray for as many persons or intentions that we wish. “Then the Priest, with hands extended, says the Collect prayer, at the end of which the people acclaim Amen.” Pay attention to the Collect prayer—it is usually centered on the theme of the Mass, whether it be a saint or a season or a solemnity of the Lord.
