Itwascold,dark,andthestormmadeourboatfeellikeawoodentoyfloatinginanangryseaoflargeswells.Theschoolofsquidilluminatedwhatwastobethemostfrighteningexperienceofmylife.Ourboatcaptainhadfallenanddrowned.Thatwas1982.Iwasbarelythirteen.Iwasjusthappytoescapewithmythreeyoungersiblings.Anythingwasbetterthanprison,whichIknewalltoowellinthepreviousthreeyearssincemyparentsbeganourfamily'sescapeplans.Wedriftedintheseaforthreedays,hungeranddehydrationtookatollonallofus.Weprayedforrescue.Weprayedfordrinkingwater.Ourprayerswereansweredwhenalightrain,providedustemporaryrelief.Littledidweknow,astormsoonfollowedandourboatwasinjeopardy.Weprayedagainandagain.IcanonlyremembertherollercoasterofmyfeelingstowardGodandhisplans.Ourrescuecameonthethirdday,whenwewerepickedupbyacargovesselandtransferredustoarefugeecampinIndonesia.Aftersevenmonthsintherefugeecamp,mysiblingsandIwereplacedwithafosterfamilyinCharlotte,NorthCarolina,untilwewerereunitedwithourparentsafewyearslater.ItwasthroughthiswholeexperiencethatIsolidifiedmycommitmenttothereligiousvocation.
