FR. SERGIO’S THANKSGIVING MESSAGE

Dear brothers and sisters, When I came to this country more than 30 years ago, the festivity of Thanksgiving was a special event. It was an occasion to gather to share and blessed God for the gifts we have received during the year. Many hours were spend eating, conversing, and playing games with the family. Heading to the mall was not a common practice. But with the passing of the years, this practice of spend-ing more time shopping than with the family began to take a greater priority. It was not until this pandemic be-gan that it put a stop to this style of living: for better or worse. We have indeed lost a lot of things, but we have revaluated a lot of other things such as the value of fami-ly. This 2020 Thanksgiving Day is without a doubt special and because it is special let us live it out with the family without rushing, sharing what we have with those that we have. We have lost loved ones during this year, not just from the pandemic but from other reasons. Let us also give thanks to God for the privileged of having had them be-ing part of our lives. Like Job let us say: “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!” (Job 1:21)

On this day of Thanksgiving let us lift our prayers to the Creator of all things and give Him thanks for what He has permitted us to have. Let us share with those we love around the dinner table without forgetting those who for whatever reason are not with us.

Happy Thanksgiving Day! Fr. Sergio Ramos.

Second Reading — As in Adam all die, so too in Christ all shall be brought to life (1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28). Gospel — Whatever you did to the least ones, you did to me (Matthew 25:31-46). INHERIT THE KINGDOM The world in which we live is complex. We are a diverse, global soci-ety and there are many issues and opinions ranging from climate change to politics to creed. Sometimes we try and sort it all out, and it is hard to know who and what to believe. One can find multiple takes on the same news story, and social media can easily sway us. Yet when we focus on the Gospel story, it seems very simple indeed. We do not have to know it all or figure it all out. We are not the one on the throne during the Last Judgment. When God starts separating the sheep from the goats, the formula is a simple rule of thumb. “When did you see Christ in others? When did you respond accordingly?” It does not ask if you are Catholic or even Christian; whether you had a police record or an incurable disease; whether you had a PhD or a fifth-grade education, or what languages you spoke. The call is to remember that “Whatsoever you did to the least you did for me.” And then there will be the invitation, “Come you who are blessed. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”

THE SHEPHERD KING The job of shepherd and the job of king couldn’t be more different from each other. Shepherds are on the lowest rung of society, kings are at the top. But God says, through the prophet Ezekiel, that the Messiah will lead in a way very different from earthly authorities who lord it over their people and cause harm with their poor leader-ship. Our King takes on the job himself. Christ, like a shepherd, will give rest, seek out the lost, bring back the strayed and scattered ones. He will heal the wounded and bind up the injured. He does not dele-gate, but will “shepherd them rightly.” We have a king who cares for us and who is not afraid to “judge between one sheep and anoth-er” (Ezekiel 34:17).

MENSAJE DEL PADRE SERGIO PARA EL DÍA DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS 2020

Queridos hermanos,

Largas horas comiendo, platican-do, y jugando juegos toda la familia.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
