Treasures From Our TraditionsThe Blessed Sacrament was not reserved in church buildings in the first centuries of the church. In those early years, of course, people met in borrowed “house churches,” gather-ing on the Lord’s Day for community, apostolic teaching, the breaking of the bread, and the prayers, as Acts of the Apostles tells us. Dispersed, people went their way into the workaday world until the next assembly. Weighing down their hearts was the absence of brothers and sisters, not only the sick, but those imprisoned for the faith. No wonder they developed a way of extending the food of the Holy Table to them.Forty years ago, every altar boy in training heard about Saint Tarcisius. He was a twelve-year-old boy at the time of intense persecution in fourth-century Rome. His community had be-gun to convey the consecrated bread from their Eucharist to those condemned to death or awaiting trial. Normally dea-cons did this, but on one occasion, it was necessary to send the boy to bear the holy mysteries to the prison. The legend says that he was an athlete, and was detained on the way by some playmates who wanted him to join in their game. When he refused, they demanded to know what he was carrying. The situation went from bad to worse, and he was badly beaten and died of his injuries. A hundred years later, a pope called him a second St. Stephen. In the nineteenth century, Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman of England wrote a novel in which he ex-panded the story and popularized it. By then, no one seemed to notice that this twelve-year-old was actually touching and ministering the Eucharist, unthinkable until recently. Schol-ars say the story rings true: the first reason for setting some Eucharistic bread aside was not adoration, but Communion of the sick.

NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS

First Reading -- When the people grumbled to Moses for water in the desert, the LORD heard and brought forth water from the rock for all to drink (Exodus 17:3-7).Psalm -- If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 95).Second Reading -- God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-2, 5-8).Gospel -- Ask, and you will be given living water so that you will never thirst again (John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]).

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by them-selves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. (Matthew 17:1–2)Adult: How has your faith in Jesus transformed you? What difference does your faith in Jesus Christ make in your life? Child: How has the example of Jesus helped you become a better person and Christian?

St. Joseph Answered Our PrayersSt. Joseph’s Table is a religious custom and tradition that started centuries ago in Sicily. It was in thanksgiving to St. Joseph for answering their prayers for rain that stopped the severe drought. A thanksgiving table was set with food from the bountiful harvest that resulted from the rain. The Community Events Ministry continues the tradition of the St. Joseph’s Table to thank St. Joseph for the abundance of rain that has beautified our hills, replenished our reservoirs and watered our agriculture. The St. Joseph’s Table and pasta dinner will be on Sunday March 19. A procession bringing St. Joseph from the church to the St. Joseph’s Table in the parish hall will follow the 11 a.m. Mass. Dinner which includes pasta, meatballs, salad, bread, lemonade and coffee and dessert will be served from 5:30 to 7:30. Tickets will be available for purchase after all the Sunday masses for the next two weeks and at the Parish office. Proceeds to benefit St. Julie’s Parish. It’s Okay to Be Human . . .An important theme of the Lenten season is the humanity of Christ. In Jesus, God became human and fully expe-rienced the wide range of emotions we all encounter in life. Jesus experienced times of loneliness, sadness, hurt, anger, disappointment, grief, and abandonment. That is part of being human. Another part of being human is needing help from each other. God never intended us to be completely self-sufficient. Part of God’s plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it.So when you are experiencing difficult times, don’t strug-gle alone. Our Stephen Ministers will walk with you, listen to you, encourage you, pray with you, and provide confi-dential one-to-one care to help you through tough times. Stephen Ministers can bring the love of Jesus back into your life. To learn more about Stephen Ministry, talk to one of our Stephen Leaders: Sr. Cristina Marie Buczkowski, SND 805-498-3602 x106 ([email protected]). Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!
