SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 – 10 DE SEPTIEMBRE, 2017

First of all, Sunday, September 10, is Grandparent’s day and I would like to wish a Happy Grandparent’s Day to all grandparents. Our Gospel today is from Matthew 18, which has been called the Sermon on the Community. In this sermon Jesus taught his followers, and teaches us how to deal with problems within a family or a community. Today’s verses 15-20 deal with fraternal correction, that is how to proceed in case of conflict among the members of the community or a family (18:15-18), and prayer in common: how to take care of those who have left the community or the family (18:19-20). Jesus gives concrete steps or actions to take. These steps may or may not work well today, in this same form, but the bottom line is that we need to try to reconcile with our family members or members of our community when harm has been done between two or more people. If necessary, one of our priests may be able to help resolve conflicts that arise in our community, but many times families can resolve these conflicts themselves. In the Our Father, we say “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Jesus tells us in this prayer how important it is for us to forgive each other. Forgiveness is not a one way street of reconciliation, it is a two way street. If we have been harmed by someone else we should tell them, and they should listen to us and ask for forgiveness from us, just as when we have harmed someone, we should listen to them and seek forgiveness from that person too. In the unity that comes from forgiveness and reconciliation, we find that our families and the members of our community are able to co-exist in peace and harmony. May God bless you and your family.

En primer lugar, el domingo, 10 de septiembre, es el día de los abuelos y me gustaría desearles un feliz día de los abuelos a todos los abuelitos. Nuestro Evangelio hoy es de Mateo 18, que ha sido llamado el Sermón de la Comunidad. En este sermón Jesús enseñó a sus seguidores, y nos enseña también cómo lidiar con problemas dentro de una familia o una comunidad. Los versículos 15-20 del Evangelio tratan de la corrección fraterna, es decir, cómo proceder en caso de conflicto entre los miembros de la comunidad o una familia (18: 15-18), y la oración en común: cómo cuidar a los que han dejado a la comunidad o la familia (18: 19-20). Jesús da pasos concretos o acciones a tomar. Estos pasos pueden o no funcionar bien hoy, en esta misma forma, pero la conclusión es que tenemos que tratar de reconciliar con los miembros de nuestra familia o miembros de nuestra comunidad cuando se hay daño entre dos o más personas. Si es necesario, uno de nuestros sacerdotes puede ayudar a resolver los conflictos que surgen en nuestra comunidad, pero muchas veces las familias pueden resolver estos conflictos ellos mismos. En el Padre Nuestro, decimos “perdónanos nuestras ofensas como también nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden”. Jesús nos dice en esta oración cuán importante es para nosotros perdonarnos. El perdón no es una vía unidireccional de reconciliación, es una calle de doble vía. Si hemos sido heridos por alguien más, debemos decirles, y ellos deben escucharnos y pedirnos perdón, así como cuando hemos dañado a alguien, debemos escucharlos y buscar el perdón de esa persona también. En la unidad que proviene del perdón y la reconciliación, encontramos que nuestras familias y los miembros de nuestra comunidad son capaces de coexistir en paz y armonía.
