St. Jude Community Homes is
pleased to announce that we have
joined Community Food Centres
Canada’s Good Food
Organizations program to
showcase our commitment to
offering impactful community
food programs based in principles
of health, empowerment, and
respect. With over 175 other Good
Food Organizations and 10
Community Food Centres across
the country, we are working to-
wards a Canada where everyone
has the means, knowledge, and
voice necessary to access good
food with dignity.
Launched in 2014, the Good Food
Organizations program offers
access to tools and resources,
customized training, an annual
conference, and opportunities to
network and promote shared
priorities. By working together
through a set of shared principles,
this important initiative connects
[your organization name] to
like-minded and progressive
organizations across the country
that are using food to tackle
problems of food insecurity,
inequality, poor health, and social
isolation.
We’re proud to be a Good Food
Organization partnering with
Community Food Centres Canada
to build a country where everyone
has the means, knowledge, and
voice necessary to access good
food with dignity. We are joining
a growing network of like-minded
organizations across Canada who
share a commitment to offering
healthy and dignified food pro-
grams in their communities.

MONEY MATTERS WORKSHOP
By: Linda
We were lucky enough to have
ABC Life Literacy Canada in
partnership with TD Bank come
to St. Jude Community Homes
and facilitate several workshops
on managing money called Money
Matters. These workshops re-
volved around educating our resi-
dents on how banking works, how
to save, and how to budget.
There was a booklet that was com-
pleted during the sessions which
included questions involving com-
fort level when it comes to bank-
ing, a questionnaire asking to de-
termine what your spending hab-
its are, and a summary of all the
banking institutions in Canada.
Some questions to consider are:
When talking about money or
banking, do you feel uncom-
fortable?
What would be reasons for
saving money at different
stages in life?

RECIPES
We hear about mixing drinks at a
bar but why not mix non-
alcoholic drinks for better
flavour? And why not with certain
teas? Teas provide a good source
of antioxidants and other health
benefits.
Below are listed a few specialty
mixes with tea that can make it
extra tasty. Instead of always mix-
ing your teas with almond, soy, or
plain milk, try one of these combi-
nations with juices! No need to
follow the recipes exactly, these
are only suggestions.
First steep the tea bag(s) in a mug
of hot water (1/2 or 2/3 full) for 5
- 10 minutes. Then remove the tea
bag(s) and add the mixer until
mug is full.
1) Green Tea + Bengal Spice {Celestial brand} =mixed with= Apple Juice
-This one can be done with just Green Tea. Try mixing with Apple Juice, it's great!
2) Rooibos Tea {4 O'Clock brand} + a spoonful of Honey + verbena? =mixed with= Blueberry Pome-granate {Oasis "Antioxia" brand}
-Verbena is optional.
3) Chai Rooibos Tea {Yogi brand} =mixed with= Pomegranate Cher-ry {Kiju brand}
-This one's probably the tasti-est in my opinion!

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES
SARAH’S COMMUNITY KITCHEN
Saturday October 20, 2018
On this chilly October weekend we
had the pleasure of having Sarah
facilitate a community kitchen
where she made chicken tacos
loaded with a ton of healthy vege-
tables, rice and beans on the side,
hard taco shells, and a pumpkin
cake! We had a blast getting to
help prepare the meal before
enjoying it, and we even had some
leftovers for the following day!

PUMPKIN CARVNG
Saturday, October 27, 2018
A few days before Halloween, we
got together to carve four pump-
kins that we placed on the
windowsills of the Dundas dining
room. We each got one pumpkin
to carve ourselves, and the fourth
pumpkin was a collaboration
between several people, making a
truly unique experience! What a
wonderful way to get into the
Halloween spirit!

DAY OF THE DEAD OUTING
Saturday November 3, 2018
The weekend after Halloween we
took a trip down to the
Harbourfront Center to enjoy the
celebration of Day of the Dead.
Dia De Los Muertos is a Mexican
tradition celebrating those that
have passed away through placing
beautifully intricate alters in their
honor.

Be the author of your own
destiny. Choose to tell your own
story. Be not afraid of the dark-
ness of your experience, as you
are the narrator of your tale.
Limn your life, however harrow-
ing it may be. You are the reader
of your document, already carved
in stone. Your "voice" exists, be-
cause you will it to be heard. Hav-
ing an individual voice is the opti-
mal choice. If a narrator’s com-
promises his truth, he renders his
voice null and void. In its ab-
sence, though, it is not a surprise,
if you choose someone else to tell
your story, you lose the autonomy
of voice, Solitary narrator's who
dare to draw their pens as sabres
are the stronger of the two.
To guide their tale of litera-
ture, their signatures are eviscer-
ating, too, Your writing fleshes
out scrawls blind to the eye, but
cuts deep the soul. Prose renders
gouts on the sword, as the collec-
tion of pages disembowel. Upside
down half-circles on the swallow-
ing floor do mock my writer's
path. Through the blinds a’quiver,
I see an invocation: a "Drawing
down the moon." A pen draws
such a fury, that it aches as if
brand new. A Priestess summons
down, as I did: a vision of the ini-
tiation well spent.
I brought my Goddess of writ-
ing through the telling time of ad-
olescence. Be the author of your
own destiny. Choose to tell your
own story. Remember that the
light of your experience, is only in
your darkness, revealed. Live your
life as a tragic epic, as it may well
be the only one told. Your story is
already carved in stone, it is you
who reads it alone. Your "voice"
exists, because you will it to be
heard, Write your words "bullet to
the bone."

You are damned if you do, and
you are damned if you don't. Con-
tinue to move on, To think, to cre-
ate, to do. Often the more some-
one criticizes you, the more some-
one envy's you. You don't grow as
a person, as an individual, with-
out taking some flack. Rest as-
sured, even in the best situation,
someone will give you his worst.
Get up, shake it off, and get on
back to life. Chronological time
spent on this earth often counts, if
it is used wisely. A child prodigy is
only as good as the many years
she takes to be a journeyman mu-
sician, The constant practice and
repetition of scales takes years
and years etc. until it becomes
"hardwired." Often critics can be
your best friend. If your "art did-
n't matter to him, why would he
criticize it. Use what you can from
the criticism, and move on.
There’s a Roadblock around
the corner tomorrow morning,
someone to get in your face. You
are damned if you do, and you are
damned if you don't. Face one
critic at a time.

When I was living with my Dad, in my early years (I might have been about thirteen years old) my Dad and I went on a trip to Barbados in the Caribbean. We had to fly over a Caribbean ocean to get there- it was really pretty seen the ocean. It was very nice of my Dad to take me to Barbados. We met some really nice people there.
While I was there, my Dad and I saw people limbo dancing- I wanted to participate but I was too shy. Our hotel was near a golf course where we stayed and we actually went golfing. While we were there, we went to town, played on a few slot machines and went to a few restaurants. We even played tennis while we were in Barbados! The weather was very nice while I was down there. They had beautiful palms trees and the people there were very nice. It was well worth going to Barbados. I would definitely do it again.

When I was about 9 years old, my Mom and I decided to visit my aunt and cousin in Palm Springs, California. While we were there, we went to Disney Land. My aunt took pictures of us with the Dis-ney characters (like Goofy, Daisy Duck and Mickey Mouse etc.) and went on rides such as Pirates of the Cove, Small World (After All) and the Twisty Cup ride- it was really fun! I even got a Disney Land record while I was there. It was a great experience for me.
During our stay, my mom and I went golfing. My uncle who also lives in Palm Springs was part of a golf club and we had a tour of his golf course while we were there. The weather was so beautiful down there, they had very beauti-ful palm trees. We did however experience a small earthquake, but luckily everyone was okay. We even celebrated my birthday dur-ing our stay.
It was a great trip and a memora-ble birthday!
