The Wisdom of St Thomas Aquinas

This Friday (28th January) we keep the feast of StThomas Aquinas. As a young novice, this saint was%!�#'��&���%����%%��&�%��������������!��� ��+��-&����'���!*.����&�&��%�#'��&����'$��)� &�! �&!����!���one of the cleverest men in history.

His greatest work (though he wrote many) was the Summa Theologica, a sort of compendium of Catholic philosophy and theology which��!��%� � &� ���� �!$� -���� �$%.� , though it is in fact one of themasterpieces of Christian thought!

Towards the beginning of his great work, Thomas gives his famous-��(�� )�+%.� &�$!'��� )����� � +� �'�� � ��� ��� �(� � )�&�!'&� &���assistance of Divine Revelation, can come to know the existence ofGod. The five ways are these:

1. Movement. In the world we see motion , but motion implies a�!(�$�� � �� '�&���&��+� �� -��$%&� �!(�$.�� &��� $��%! � �!$� ���� �!&�! � ,and this we call God.

2. Cause. Things in the world are produced by their causes , but thesein turn were produced by their causes, and so on. Ultimately there�'%&����� �-' ��'%�����'%�.�!$�-��$%&��'%�.�, and this we call God.

���! &� �� �+����� �%�)������$�� !&� ���%%�$+��$���������-�! &� �� &.�, they come into existence, decay and ultimately pass away.Our whole world, in fact, is contingent. But contingent things demandas their ultimate explanation a non-contingent, necessary being ,and this we call God.

4. Perfection. Looking round the world we see that some thingsare more perfect than others. But this implies there must besomething which is most perfect, against which everything else isjudged , and this we call God.

5. Order. The universe we see around us is ordered , were it not,no sort of life could exist. But order implies a Mind, which brings aboutthe order , and this we call God.

In an age which often opposes faith and reason, St Thomas reminds usthat human learning can and should be in harmony with DivineWisdom. The world around us is a gift from God , and the better weunderstand it, the nearer to Him we grow.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Remembrance Sunday falls on the Sunday

nearest Armistice Day, 11 November, which marks the end of the First World War. On this day we remember all those who gave their lives for their country, all who suffered and died through acts of war and those who

were left behind to grieve and mourn.

CONFIRMATION 2017 Application Forms were available from Fr Uche last weekend, and are additionally available this weekend ONLY, to be returned no later than Sunday 20th November. Applicants must apply in person, and be in School Year 8 or above this academic year. The Confirmation Programme runs on Fridays at 5.30 - 7pm, and will start in the new year.

Parishioners are invited to attend a "Mission Showcase" on Thursday 17th November 6:00-7:30pm in The Holy Cross School Hall. A dynamic team of young people from the Sion Community will be presenting the Gospel and creating space for people to reflect and respond, whether it be for the first time or the hundredth time!
