St. Paul counsels us to not be overcome by evil but to overcome evil by good. Please pray for the peace that

we desire and the healing of all that divides us: Prayer for Reconciliaon

God of perfect peace,

Violence and cruelty can have no part with you.

May those who are at peace with one another hold fast to the

good will that unites them;

may those who are enemies forget their hatred

and be healed.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your

Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

From: The Sacramentary

September is The Month of Our Lady of

Sorrows

The Seven Sorrows Devotion

The Blessed Virgin Mary grants

seven graces to the souls who

honor her daily by saying seven

Hail Mary's and meditating on her

tears and dolors (sorrows). The devotion was passed on by St.

Bridget.

SEVEN SORROWS

1. The prophecy of Simeon. (St. Luke 2:34, 35)

2. The flight into Egypt. (St. Matthew 2:13, 14)

3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the temple. (St. Luke 2: 43-45)

4. The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross.

5. The Crucifixion.

6. The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross.

7. The burial of Jesus.

HERE ARE THE SEVEN GRACES:

1. I will grant peace to their families.

2. They will be enlightened about the divine mysteries.

3. I will console them in their pains and I will accompany them

in their work.

4. I will give them as much as they ask for as long as it does not

oppose the adorable will of my divine Son or the sanctification

of their souls.

5. I will defend them in their spiritual battles with the infernal

enemy and I will protect them at every instant of their lives.

6. I will visibly help them at the moment of their death, they

will see the face of their Mother.

7. I have obtained from my divine Son, that those who

propagate this devotion to my tears and dolors, will be taken

directly from this earthly life to eternal happiness since all their

sins will be forgiven and my Son and I will be their eternal

consolation and joy.

Prayer for Students Lord our God,

in your wisdom and love you surround us with the mysteries of the universe.

Send your spirit upon these students and fill them with your wisdom and blessings.

Grant that they may devote themselves to their studies and draw ever closer to you, the source of all knowledge.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Teachers Lord God, your spirit of wisdom fills the earth

and teaches us in your ways. Look upon these teachers.

Let them strive to share their knowledge with gentle patience and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds.

Grant that we may follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life,

forever and ever. Amen.

Gospel - Mark 7:31-37

Christ the Friend

Did Jesus need to go through that whole ritual of touching this poor man’s ears and tongue and speaking the word of command?

Certainly not. More than once Jesus performed miracles without any tangible contact with the beneficiary. What comes across in

this encounter is God’s humility. Christ deigns to bring the healing power of God into this man’s life through symbolic gestures and

visible signs. He continues using this tactic through the ministry of his Church: the sacraments (as well as many of the Church’s other ministries) are tangible connections between concrete individuals and divine grace. God made us to exist in the unity of body and soul, and he comes to save us in a way appropriate to that nature. We should be grateful for his patience and condescension, and we

should be careful to imitate it as we try to bring Christ to those around us.

The Better Part is available now in the Shrine

Gift shop

Further Reflection: Catechism of The Catholic Church

1084 "Seated at the right hand of the Father" and pouring out the Holy Spirit on his Body which is the Church, Christ now

acts through the sacraments he instituted to communicate his grace. The sacraments are perceptible signs (words and actions) accessible to our human nature. By the action of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit they make present

efficaciously the grace that they signify.

Adult Faith Formation Program at St. Joseph the Worker Shrine

Twice per year (Spring and Fall) St. Joseph the Worker Shrine

features Adult Faith Education classes conducted on 7 successive Wednesdays by Fr. Gene Tremblay OMI, S.T.L.

This year, we will present a Scriptural offering: The Letters of St. Paul.

The Fall session will open on Wednesday, September 23 and will continue on thru September 30; October 7, 14, 21, 28

concluding on November 4th.

This Fall, in Part I, we will set the stage, so to speak, by examining the man, Paul of Tarsus and the worlds he inhabited (Greek and Jewish) and we will explore how the format of his

letters helped shape the Gospel message for his hearers.

Next Spring (Lent) in Part II, we will examine the actual 13 letters that make up St. Paul’s contribution to the New

Testament.

Format: “ Soup and Substance” – arrive anytime after 6:00 p.m. (if you choose) and enjoy a repast of hearty soups, chili, baked beans, chowder and breads along with beverages and desserts. Class follows in the Conference Hall and runs from

7:00-8:30 p.m.

For more detailed information as to content and cost, visit our website www.stjosephshrine.org or consult the flyer in this

week’s bulletin or the posters in the lobby. Let us hear from you soon so that we can plan to accommodate all who might

want to participate. We’ve been averaging some 50 participants in these programs – we would max-out of space at

85 folks.

September 6 – Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

When Jesus cures the deaf man, “He ordered them (the crowd) not to tell

anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it.” Christ is risen from

the dead, there is no need to “not tell anyone” of His marvelous deeds. Disciples in

the 21st century are encouraged to speak about Jesus in our lives. Sadly, many do not. Listen to

Isaiah: “Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God….,” .

Pray for courage to tell someone how Jesus

has worked in your life. Tomorrow is Labor Day. Spreading the Good News is a labor of love!

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Many of life’s most important lessons come through experience. We live and learn through our successes and mistakes, often discovering the truth about ourselves and others when we least expect it. Experience can open our eyes and our minds to a better understanding and a deeper appreciation of life. That insight can happen in an instant. When Jesus cures the deaf and mute, it is not simply to restore them to health, but rather to lead them to faith. He opens their ears that they can hear the Gospel and He opens their mouths that they can proclaim what they have heard. Healing is never about Jesus showing His power. It is the power of God, restoring balance and wholeness so that the message of salvation is more apparent and experienced by those healed and by those who witness it. In the Rite of Baptism for Children, the Church prays that the Lord will soon touch the child’s ears to receive His word and the child’s mouth to proclaim His faith. The experience of baptism changes life in an instant. By faith we are given the charge to be a witness, to grow in our understanding and love of God and to be the faithful disciples of the Lord. It is an instant in time where we are put on the path to eternity.

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Every family has good intentions of becoming better, closer, more caring and more loving. Children will follow the example of their parents and older siblings, so spending time together and doing great things helps build character and reinforce values. But, good intentions, made in time of celebration and leisure, are lost to the reality of busy lives and the lack of a purpose for which they were made. Who’s to notice, anyway? Another year will pass and those resolutions will be waiting for us next year. But before we write off our good intentions, we might consider a different kind of resolution, one that has purpose and meaning, It requires a little planning, some time and a bit of effort. But it promises lots of rewards, a sense of gratification and a good night’s sleep. Let’s consider service. How many times do we get a request for volunteers? How often does the pastor mention something that could use our efforts, or people who are looking for aid? So many people need help, especially some who live in our parish and in our neighborhood. Why not volunteer as a family? Sign up to deliver meals, or visit the nursing home. Tutor someone in reading or math. Help with a community project or work with Habitat for Humanity. Write letters, serve meals, or help a senior citizen in need. You’ll find a resolution you’ll love to keep!
