School Overview

St.JosephtheWorkerSchoolcommencedoperationin1978andquicklygrewtoatwostreamschoolfromPreptoYearSix.Theschoolandparishcommunitieshavealwaysworkedincloseco-operationwithoneanotherthroughtheParishPastoralCouncilandotherjointcommittees.

ThepropertyisboundedonthreesidesbyEdgarsCreekandhasapleasantlyappointedplaygroundwithshadedareasforthestudents.Theschoolhasthreeseparatepermanentstructures,whichhouse14classrooms,computerlab,libraryspace,ArtsandLOTErooms,hallandaschooladministrationcenter.Thebuildingsarewellmaintainedandingoodcondition.

Thecurrentschoolpopulationis210.Therehasbeenadeclineinnumbersovertimeduetochangingdemographics.ThepercentageofchildrenwhoareCatholichasremainedsteadyon80%.OurstudentsarecurrentlygroupedinonePrepclass,oneYearOne,twoYearTwoclasses,twoYearThreeclasses,twoYearFourclassesandthreemultiageseniorclasses.Thesocio-economicstatusbandis92.

StJosephtheWorkerservesarangeofethnicbackgroundswhichisreflectedintheschoolpopulation.TheschoolmaintainsahighleveloffamilieswithanItalianbackgroundandwelcomesfamiliesfromadiverserangeofculturesincludingVietnamese,Chinese,IndianandSriLankan.

Currentlywehave28dedicatedmembersofstaff;14classroomteachers(8fulltimeand6parttime),aPrincipal(inherfirstyearofprincipalshipatStJosephtheWorker),DeputyPrincipal/AdditionalNeedsLeader,LearningandTeacher/LiteracyLeader,MathsLeader,StudentWellbeingLeaderandReligiousEducationLeader.WehaveparttimeItalian,ArtandPhysicalEducationteachers.Thereare2administrationofficers(afulltimestaffmemberandoneworkingfourdaysperweek)andaLibraryadministratorworkingonedayaweek.Wealsohave3learningSupportOfficers.Ateacherisreleasedonedayperweektoco-ordinateICTwithintheschool.Furthermore,wehaveaConsultativeCommittee,OccupationalHealthandSafetyteamandaunionrepresentative.StJosephtheWorkeralsohasacounselloronedayaweekandoffersMusicLessonseachMonday.

StudentleadershiprolesincludeSchoolCaptainsandViceCaptains,SportsHouseCaptains,aLiturgyTeam,ArtsTeamandGreenTeamwhoworkcloselywithstaffleaderstoplanandorganizearangeofschoolactivitiesandwhotakeanactiveroleininformingtheschoolcommunityofouraccomplishmentsandupcomingevents.

Principal’s Report

Thestaff,studentsandfamiliesofSt.JosephtheWorkercanbejustifiablyproudoftheireffortsduring2016.

OurProfessionalLearninghascontinuedtofocusonLearningandTeaching,targetingareasofneedinReading.TheYear3-6teachersparticipatedinfivedaysofReadingtoLearnworkingcollaborativelytoimplementstrategiestosupportreadingcomprehensioninthemiddleandseniorclasses.StaffalsorevisitedRestorativePracticesandCircleTime,discussedtheYearofMercyandintroducedthenewChildSafePolicy.

TheCatholicethosofourschoolisconstantlydrawnintofocusthroughprayerandreflectionandtheregularwholeschoolcelebrationofEucharistandparticipationinourSacramentalProgram.

Iwouldliketothankthestafffortheircontinuedcommitmentanddedicationtoensuringstudentsarechallengedintheirlearningandprovidedwiththeopportunitytoreachtheirfullpotential.FrMannyBonello,ourParishPriest,hascontinuedtobeinvolvedinthelifeoftheschoolthroughhisinvolvementwiththeSchoolBoardandregularinteractionwithstaffandstudentsthroughliturgies,prayerservicesanddiscussionswithstudents.

ThestudentsofSt.JosephtheWorkerworktogetherinaspiritofco-operationandwillingnesstolearn,whichmakesourjobenjoyable.Theyarerespectfulandwell-manneredandtheycontinuetoenjoyalllearningatourschool.Studentsareencouragedbytheirparentswhoactivelysupporttheschoolembracingtheethosofourcommunityof‘workingtogether’.IamimpressedbythestudentswillingnesstoembraceandsupportourSRC,ArtsandGreenTeam,workingtogethertomakeavaluablecontributiontoourschool.

Finally,lwishtoacknowledgeandthankalltheparentsfortheircontributionstoandsupportofourschool.TheSchoolBoardmembershavecontinuedtoplayavaluableandimportantroleinensuringthatourcommunitysocializesandworkstogethertosupportourcommunity.Ouraimistoalwaysextendawarmwelcometoallfamilies,acknowledgingthatweworktogethertosupportandenhancetheeducationofallstudentsinourschool.

School Education Board Report

StJosephtheWorkerhashadasuccessfulyearin2016.Ibelieveweareveryfortunatetohaveacommunitywhichissocommitted,considerateandunited.I’dliketoextendaveryheartfeltthankyoutothespecialgroupofparentsandhelpers,bothinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.Frombarbeques,tohotlunches,tocampsandschooldiscos,withouttheparentsthatdedicatetheirtime,itwouldbeimpossibletoruntheseeventssuccessfully.

Forhisspiritualleadership,I’dliketothankFrManny.YouinstilltheteachingsofGodinourchildren,assistingthembuildstrongChristianvalues,andtoshowlove,kindnessandcompassiontowardsothers.Wethankyouforyourconstantprayersandguidance.Wethanktheclassteachersforpreparingthechildrenforsacraments.

Aschoolisnotaschoolwithoutthededicationanddeterminationofteachers.Wethankthemfortheirtiresomeeffortstoeducateourchildren.Yourlessonsstandnotonlyintheclassroom,butinprovidingmemories,instillingvalues,andembeddingstrategiesinthelifelonglearningjourneyforourpreciouslittleones.

Fundraisingrequiresmuchplanningandcommitment.Thefundraisingcommitteehasdoneanamazingjob,organizingeventssuchasthetrivianight,Mother’sDay&Father’sDaystalls,theschooldisco,andtheelectiondaybarbequetonameafew.Theseeventshaveraisedtheschoolapproximately$17,000.

ThankstotheGreenTeamfortheirintegralroleineducatingtherestoftheschoolcommunityonsustainabilityandtheenvironment.Likewise,totheArtsTeamforprovidingandmaintainingexistingartworks,andfortheireffortsinbeautifyingtheschool,makingitamorecolourfulandinterestingplace.Thankyou!

ThisyearthemaintenanceteamwasheadedbyJoeSinopoli.Joe’sdiligenceinorganizingandcoordinatingtheworkingbeeshasledtotheefficientcompletionofahugevolumeoftaskssuchasrefreshingthegazeboarea,layingyellowsafetystripsinhazardousareas,generalgardenmaintenance,includingpaving,replanting,mulchingandmaintenanceofnativecorridor,thecleanoutandofthefrogpond,andfence&gaterepairs.

Andlastlytotheboardmemberswhoseeffortsandgoodwillbenefitsthewellbeingoftheschool.Thankyouforyourtimespentattendingboardmeetingsandotherschoolevents

Intended Outcomes ThatallmembersofStJosephtheWorkercommunitywillbeabletoarticulate,modelandlivetheirunderstandingsofbeingpartofaCatholiccommunity.

Achievements • StaffparticipatedinaprofessionaldevelopmentdayfacilitatedbyBernadetteVenables(CEM).

SheassistedstafftounpackandbuilduptheirunderstandingoftheYearofMercyandfocusedontheSpiritualandCorporalWordsofMercy.

• ThestaffcontinuedtoreviewtheLearning,LifeandFaithconceptualframeworkinlightofVicCurriclum,ensureastronglinkbetweentheReligiousEducationLearningFociandsecularinquiryareaswhereverpossible.

• TwoLearning,LifeandFaithLeaderscontinuetoplanregularlywithteacherstosupportthelearningthroughouttheschool.

• TheRELmeetsregularlywiththeParishPriesttoplanliturgiesandliaiseswiththePastoralAssociateinregardstosacramentalprogramstoensureschoolandparishgoalsarealigned.

• Thestudentsandtheirfamiliesareanintegralpartofthesocialjusticeprogramoftheschool,throughprayerandmaterialsupportofthelocalcommunityintheFeastoftheSacredHeartandtheglobalcommunitythroughsupportofProjectCompassion,MissionWeekandtheSchoolofStJudeinTanzania.

• StudentsandtheirfamiliesattendSundayClassMasseswheretheyparticipatewithotherparishionersandprovideareflectiontoenhancetheceremonythatlinkswiththeirclassroomlearning.

• StaffbegantounpacktheCEMHorizonsofHopeFramework,withafocusontheVisionforCatholicEducationinourArchdiocese.

• TheSeniorLiturgyteamassistsinthepreparationandpresentationofMassesandotherprayertimes.

• StudentsareregularlyinvolvedinprayerandliturgythroughclassandschoolMasses,weeklyprayeratwholeschoolassemblies.Classlevelsarealsoabletosharetheirlearning,aprayerorreflectionorsongthattheyhavelearntaspartoftheirRE/LLF.

• Prayerlifeisvisibleandactiveinclassrooms(seenviaprayerstables,changingliturgicalseasonsandcolours,crucifixesandarangeofprayerresources)toensurethatprayerisanintegralpartofschoollife.

• StudentsparticipateintheSacramentalprogramthroughtheguidanceoftheirparentsandteachersandthesupportofthewholeparishcommunity.Wherepossible,allsacramentalMassestakeplaceduringregularSundayParishMasses.

• MakingJesusReal(MJR)–students,staffandFrMannycontinuetouseaconsistentlanguageandexpectationbasedontheMJRprogram.

• StaffandschoolfamiliesareinvitedtoattendandlistentotheParishGuestSpeakerwhoin2016wasFrBobMaguirewhospokeontheYearofMercy.

• HolyWeekandEasterprayerservices.

• CelebrationMassfortheFeastofourpatron,StJosephtheWorker.

• FamilyChristmasCarolseveningincludedthenativityplayatthebeginningofthenightandtheschoolchoiralsoparticipatedalongwithacarolsorsongfromeachyearlevel.

• ProfessionallearningopportunitiesregardingGAFE(GoogleAppsforEducation)havecontinued,withteacherssharingtheirexpertisewitheachother.MostteamsarenowusingGoogleDocstoplancollaboratively,sharewithothersandstoreonGoogleDrive.

• 2014-2016NAPLANresultsdemonstratethatstudentsdoexceptionallywellagainstNational

benchmarks.Our2014-2016dataindicatesthat100%ofYear3studentshaveachievedthe

benchmark inall areasexceptnumeracywhere therehasbeena slightdownward trend in

2015-2016.

• Our 2014-2016 Year 5 results demonstrate a continuous upward trend in Reading, and

Grammar and Punctuation. Our Writing data indicates an improvement from 2015-2016.

Furthermore,wehavemaintained100%studentsachievingthebenchmarkinNumeracyand

Spellingoverthepasttwoyears.

Achievements

AtStJosephtheWorkerPrimarySchoolweholdthecare,safetyandwellbeingofchildrenandyoungpeopleasacentralandfundamentalresponsibilityofourschool.OurcommitmentisdrawnfromandinherentintheteachingandmissionofJesusChrist,withlove,justiceandthesanctityofeachhumanpersonattheheartofthegospel(CECVCommitmentStatementtoChildSafety).

StJosephtheWorkerPrimarySchooliscommittedtoprovidingasafeenvironmentforallstudentsandyoungpeopleandwilltakeactivestepstoprotectthemagainstabuse.Toachievethis,theschoolhasdevelopedandactivelyenforcesChildSafetyStrategiestoensurethatanypersoninvolvedinchild-connectedworkisawareoftheirobligationsandresponsibilitiesforensuringthesafetyofallchildrenundertheircare.

In2016weintroducedtheChildSafestandardstothecommunityby:

• Staff were introduced to this policy through staff meetings and Professional Learning Team
