Good Shepherd | Madonna del Castello | St. Colman | St. John Fisher | St. Jude the Apostle | St. Maurice | Word of God

+++For the past two weeks there has been no

“Faithful Chronicles.” Instead, two weeks ago in this

bulletin I presented the letter from Bishop Zubik to

all parishioners announcing the formation of St.

Joseph the Worker Parish and his letter to me

appointing me its first pastor. Last week you read

the official canonical degree merging our former

seven parishes into the one new St. Joseph the Worker Parish,

effective July 1, 2020. This decree also detailed the

boundaries of our new parish. The “eight great churches of the

East” are now one!

+++I am grateful to all who helped to make our Mass of

Thanksgiving on Wednesday evening, July 1, in Word of God

Church the lovely and prayerful liturgy it was. Members of

the former pastoral councils and finance councils, as well as

parish staff and heads of parish organizations, joined the clergy

team in person for the Mass. Dozens of parishioners watched

via live-streaming. Thanks to all. We are off to a good start,

with the intercession of St. Joseph, patron of the universal

church, loving spouse of Mary, and carpenter of Nazareth!

+++Let me extend thanks and encouragement to parishioners

who are attending our Masses, on Sundays and weekdays.

You are setting such good example by wearing masks and

practicing social distancing faithfully. Keep it up! Again I

remind all that in March the bishops of Pennsylvania removed

the obligation of participating in Sunday Mass during this

pandemic. Use common sense (for those who are older, or with

chronic health conditions, or are beginning to have symptoms

of coronavirus) in deciding whether to attend in person or to

watch our live-streaming or another Mass at home. As

Catholic Christians all of us are obliged to pray daily, practice

our faith and carry out acts of charity and justice.

+++As was reported by the federal government and in local

news reports, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and its

parishes and schools received about $13-14 million through

the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) passed by Congress in

March. We applied for six of our parishes. St. Maurice Parish

received a PPP loan totaling $51,300, which we will work to

receive forgiveness over the next several months. The other

parishes’ applications were ignored. With the advice of the

diocese we have reached out to another local bank on behalf of

the five other parishes for a PPP loan. I’ll let you know what

becomes of these proposals. On behalf of our staff, who

remain employed because of your Offertory generosity during

the shutdown, I am grateful to the federal government and the

Congress for this loan (soon to be forgiven).

+++The coronavirus pandemic has uprooted so many nooks

and crannies of our lives. One is that our parish cannot host

fundraising events and meetings of parish organizations.

Outside of church services, we are limited to indoor meetings

25 persons by mandate of the Pennsylvania health department.

We are also required to clean and disinfect every room where a

meeting might be held before and afterwards. This is very

expensive and time consuming. As a result, for the rest of the

summer I reluctantly have to tell parish organizations and

groups that for your health I cannot allow meetings to be held

on church properties. I will revisit this decision in early

September, if the local and state conditions change. I don’t like

making this decision, but I am doing it for the good health of

all. Consider having telephone or Zoom conference calls, or

meeting outdoors in a local park or a backyard.

+++We have a new website! www.sjwpitt.org . Thanks to

parishioners Angelo Baiocchi and Cathy Collins who have

adapted the former websites for St. Maurice and Catholic

Westinghouse Valley. It’s a work in progress, and we are

trying to improve it each week. Visit it and tell your friends. I

welcome constructive comments and criticism from you to

make it better. You can email your comments to me at

[email protected] .

+++Look for the job posting in the bulletin for a new parish

staff position, Coordinator of Youth Ministries. Let people

know we are hiring.

+++Because of the coronavirus pandemic, in an extraordinary

act Bishop Zubik has given all pastors/administrators

permission to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation

between now and the end of the year. We have scheduled three

dates for our 55 children who were prevented from receiving

this sacrament this past spring: Tuesday, July 28, in St.

Colman Church; Wednesday, July 29, in St. John Fisher

Church; and Tuesday, August 18, in St. Maurice Church. We

will have limits of family members to attend, so that we can

keep attendance under 25% of capacity. Pray for our young

people as they receive the fullness of Christian initiation and

the loving power of the Holy Spirit.

+++Over the next three weeks we will have guest columnists

in the bulletin. Father Peter Daly writes about his “death box,”

and Fathers John Odeyemi and Matt Hawkins address “Black

Lives Matter” and “Black Catholic Lives Matter.”

+++We pray for all our beloved dead, during the pandemic and

up to today. During this heat wave pray also for the soul of

Willis H. Carrier, the inventor of air-conditioning. He

designed and built the first a/c unit in Buffalo, New York, in

1902. May he rest in the coolness of heaven, and not in the

heat of hell.

Faith Chronicles

By Father Peter Daly, Guest Columnist

During this coronavirus shutdown, I have been

working on projects at home. One of them is my "death box."

Not an attractive name, but a necessary part of planning for

death in our culture. My death box is a plastic file box which

contains all the relevant papers and records that will be

needed as I approach death or needed by others after I die. It

is a recognition that life is short and death is sure. Death may

seem remote, just like pandemics may seem remote, but

eventually it comes. So we might as well be ready.

What do I have in my death box? Here is a partial list.

This may be added to later.

• A copy of my advanced care planning health care

directive, colloquially known as a "living will," with

instructions for my health care if, or when, I am

unable to make decisions for myself. This includes

instructions regarding pain management, life

sustaining measures and whether an autopsy should

be done.

• A copy of my appointment of a health care

representative to make my health care decisions if I

am unable to do so for myself. This should only be

one person, but with backups if the representative is

unavailable. (Give the representative the originals of

the appointment and the directives.)

• A list of my doctors' names and addresses.

(Constantly needing updating.)

• A copy of a durable power of attorney, appointing

someone to take care of my financial affairs if I

should be unable to take care of them for myself.

• A copy of my last will and testament —to dispose of

real estate and personal property. This is a legal

document which must be done in accord with the law

of the state where you live. It appoints my executor to

handle my affairs after I die.

• A copy of my funeral plan and instructions for my

funeral Mass and burial, including prayers, scripture

readings and hymns. A copy goes to the archdiocese,

but the original goes to our former choir director, who

will be in charge of fulfilling my wishes. I also

indicated which priests I would like to celebrate my

funeral and preach, if they are available. I also have

left instructions and money for a reception after my

funeral.

• A list of prepaid funeral expenses and instructions for

use of my death benefit policy.

• The deed to my burial plot in our parish cemetery. I

purchased a plot about 10 years ago.

• A copy of my birth certificate, which will be

necessary for completing my death certificate, when

the time comes.

• A list of all my financial assets including bank

accounts, retirement accounts and investments and

insurance policies.

• The deed to my house and the record of its purchase.

• Important milestone documents such as copies of

diplomas from various schools, my ordination

documents, my admission to the American Bar

Association, etc.

• A sketch of my concept of a headstone for my grave,

with suggested wording.

• A list of the names and addresses of my heirs, friends

and relatives to be notified at my death.

There are probably things which I have forgotten. But

this is a start. Nobody dies with all their paperwork perfectly

in order. The will, for example, needs to be updated every few

years whenever there is a major change in circumstances,

such as the death of heirs. The death box does not solve all

problems, but it makes it easier for the people who have to

come along and pick up the pieces when I die.

Some things are not yet done. I still plan to write a

brief biography. I will also draft an obituary to send to the

local paper. One thing I should do is tell people where to find

the death box as the time comes.

In this time of COVID-19, the death box has a bigger

spiritual purpose. It reminds me of my mortality. Now is the

time to start letting go. Maybe because I am Irish, I do not

really mind.

As I have been working on my death box, I find

myself singing the words to "Molly Malone," which could

almost have been written for the coronavirus:

She died of a fever

And so one could save her

And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone

Now her ghost wheels her barrow

Through the streets broad and narrow

Crying “cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh.”

Father Daly is a retired priest of the Washington Archdiocese

and a lawyer. After 31 years of parish service, he volunteers

at Catholic Charities assisting immigrants with legal issues.
