The Ascension the Lord

W hat is Ascension all about? It means that in the incarnation event, Jesus became man by the power of the Holy Spirit through Mary.

Ascension was not a farewell party for Jesus. That Jesus will not come back or the termination of His redemptive works. Rather, it was His hour of glorification by the Father, The time for His physical and visible presence in our midst was completed but the time for His presence in its invisible and sacramental dimension has just started. Even though Christ is no longer present to us physically and visibly, He is still here with us because He said: “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do unto me.” He, too, said: “Whenever you gather in my name, I am in your midst.” In the consecration of the Eucharist, the priest pronounces: “This is my Body…This is my Blood.” Indeed, the host and the wine become Christ’s Body and Blood.

There is a story that says that, when Jesus returned to heaven, his Father asked him whom he had left on earth in order to carry out his mission. Jesus proudly told his Father that his friends would do it. “And”, God replied, “you mean Peter who betrayed you, and Judas who sold you and all the rest of the disciples who ran away when you were crucified? You mean to tell me that they are going to carry out your work”? Jesus answered, “Yes, Father, they are the only ones, except for Judas”. His Father said, “What is your backup plan”? Jesus said, “There is no backup plan. Either they do it or it does not get done. There is no plan B. We are the only plan that God has to bring His Good News to other people. We are His only witnesses. We are the ones with the power to show others how to go to heaven. And, if we think about it, this power that God has given us comes with an awesome responsibility, the responsibility to use His gifts to us for His glory, and not just for our own pleasures. They say little who love much. In fact, those who love much need not say much. As long as there are men and women who quietly and humbly live out their commitment to the mandate of the Ascension, then we can be rest assured that the work of salvation goes on.

ASK YOURSELF: Are you engaged in something that’s beneficial to your church and society? Can you say at the end of your earthly life, like Christ did, “Mission accomplished?”

Congratulations to these children who received the First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 5, 2018,

I believe in ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC and APOSTOLIC Church. These are what are called the “Four Marks of the Church.” This week we focus on the fourth mark: APOSTOLIC The Church Jesus founded is apostolic because He appointed the apostles to be the first leaders of the Church, and their successors were to be its future leaders. The apostles were the first bishops, and, since the first century, there has been an unbroken line of Catholic bishops faithfully handing on what the apostles taught the first Christians in Scripture and Sacred Tradition (2 Timothy 2:2). Including Peter, there have been 266 popes over the past 2,000 years. Eighty of them are saints. Some were of questionable moral character but all of them zealously protected the Deposit of Faith left to us by the original Apostles. Two of the Gospels were written by Apostles – St. Matthew and St. John. It is widely understood that St. Mark received the input for his Gospel from the teachings of St. Peter while traveling with and listening to him. St. Luke re-ceived the bulk of his information from St. Paul and other eyewitnesses of Je-sus’ teachings. St. Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, while St. Paul wrote most of the letters of the New Testament with others written by Sts. Pe-ter, James, John and Jude. The Book of Revelation was likely written by St. John the Apostle. There is no public revelation of God’s Word after the death of the last Apostle - St. John who died near the year 100 AD. Peter was the only Apostle to lead the universal Church as Pope. However, each of the Apostles (including Paul) ordained deacons, priests and bishops to assist them and to continue protecting the Deposit of Faith as their succes-sors. There are some Eastern Orthodox churches who can trace the ordina-tion of bishops back to the Apostles and have valid sacraments but do not recognize the supreme authority of the Roman pontiff. None of the protestant denominations can claim Apostolic succession for their ministers, deacons, priests, bishops, etc.
