Pastor’s Column

Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, Today we welcome many guests and visitors. We are very happy that you are here with us! You are always welcome. Every year I write a Christmas poem. I put it on my Christmas card. I have done this for several years now. It’s a funny thing, because I never know what new in-sight into Christmas I will have until I sit down and write the poem. This year, the poem was inspired by one of the stained glass windows at St. Joe, the so-called “Magi Window.” What struck me was that one of the three kings, King Melchoir is kneel-ing down, giving Jesus his gold. That’s not what’s unusual, of course. What’s unusual is that the win-dow depicts Melchoir giving Jesus the crown off his head. It’s as though he is abdicating his power, giving it all to the true King. Anyway, here’s my poem for Christmas 2019:

The desert he crossed-- the pathway unsure -- no matter the cost

He laid his gifts there in front of the King uttering a prayer

That King, He smiled and said with care, "Put that here, child."

"You mean my crown?" -- it was hard to let go -- but he laid it down.

One day he died And that King was there! "My Son," He cried, "My crown is yours to wear."

I pray for you all this Christmas. Today is a day of great joy—the cookies, the gifts, Christmas pajam-as, eggnog, family time, the snow (I hope)…the list goes on. Let us never forget that everything good about Christmas—everything good in our lives—comes from the Babe in the manger. It’s the most

wonderful thing! Don’t forget to keep your Christmas decorations up until the Epiphany (January 6). We Catholics celebrate Christmas for 12 days after Christmas Day (hence the song about the 12 days of Christ-mas), because there is too much joy about the Incarnation to contain in one simple day. If you’re here today and it has been a while since you’ve been to Mass, I’m so glad you’re here. Please come back….we need you. God bless you, Fr. Mike

Year-end Giving and the IRA Charitable Rollover

As we approach the end of the year, many are thinking about charitable year-end giving and how to support our parishes while maximizing the tax benefits. The IRA charitable rollover (known as the QCD) is a popular choice for those 70 ½ and older. Donors can make a tax-free gift directly from the IRA of up to $100,000 and avoid paying income taxes on this distribution. The gift meets the required minimum distribution and the owner of the IRA doesn’t have to pay income taxes on this gift. Please contact Rebecca in the Parish Office at 317-398-8227 if interested. If you are planning to make a year-end gift to St. Joseph, we need to receive your gift before January 1st.

Angel Tree News

This year we were blessed in that just 9 children from 3 families needed to be adopted. They received clothes, toys and Christmas dinner thanks to several very generous sponsors. In addition, over 200 toys, several bicycles, coats, and clothes were donated to the Salvation Army for its annual Angel Tree event. Much needed supplies went to Especially Kidz! Many cleaning supplies, linens and other items were lovingly donated to Hancock Hope House. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in these programs; we are very grateful!

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend’s readings are about God with us, Emmanuel. We arriving at the moment of celebration of God’s presence within the human family. Our celebration of Jesus’ birth is only two days away. Do we really know what we are celebrating?

The Emmanuel of Advent-Christmas, the God who is with us, witnesses our social life from within the community, so that God is not far away but is actually among us as we become part of each other’s lives (and sometimes step on them), as we work together (and sometimes against each oth-er). As we try to support each other (and some-times fail).

There is no game of hide and seek with this God, who is present to witness our good deeds and our misdeeds. This week as we take time to pray (and it is important especially this week when we think we are too busy), let us rejoice at the prospect of having God among us. Let us also reflect on the awesome responsibility of living in the presence of God.

May each of you have a blessed Christmas.

Sr. Joan

Year End Giving

If you are planning to make a year-end gift to St. Vincent Cemetery Endowment Fund or St. Vincent Parish Endowment Fund or to the par-ish, we need to receive your gift before January 1, 2020. According to the IRS guidelines, the post-mark on the envelope must not be later than December 31st. All donations given during New Year's Eve Mass will count as a 2019 donation.

Today’s Readings—Dec. 22

First Reading — You will be given this sign: The virgin shall conceive and bear a son (Isaiah 7:10-14). Psalm — Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory (Psalm 24). Second Reading — God has called us to belong to Jesus Christ (Romans 1:1-7). Gospel — The son born of Mary shall be called Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:18-24).

Nativity Prayer

Please use the following prayer in front of your nativity scene at your home. Turn your “decoration” into a place of prayer and reflection. O Divine Redeemer Jesus Christ, prostrate before Your crib, I believe You are the God of infinite Majesty, even though I see You here as a helpless babe. I humbly adore and thank You for having so humbled Yourself for my salvation as to will to be born in a manger. I thank You for all You did for me in Bethlehem, for Your poverty and humility, for Your nakedness, tears, cold and sufferings. I desire to show You the tenderness which Your Virgin Mother had toward You. I hope to love You as she did. If only I could praise You with the joy of the angels, that I could kneel before You with the faith of St. Joseph, and the simplicity of the shepherds. Uniting myself with these first adorers at the crib, I offer You the homage of my heart, and I beg that You would be born spiritually in my soul. Make me reflect in some degree the virtues of Your holy nativity. Fill me with that spirit of poverty and humility, which prompted You to assume the weakness of our human nature, and to be born amid destitution and suffering. Grant that from this day forward, I may in all things seek Your greater glory, and may enjoy that peace promised to men of good will. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Some thoughts to ponder as you pray in front of your Nativity Scene… What would it have been like to be in Bethle-

hem that night? Did the people of Bethlehem know what was

happening? Where does the presence of Jesus need to be

born again in our world, in our community, in our homes?

What would it have been like to be Mary, Jo-seph, a shepherd, a king, the innkeeper…etc?

What impact has the birth of Jesus Christ had on the world, in our country in your life?

Do we make room for Christ in our heart, our homes our busy lives, or is there no room like the Inn?

What character would you most be like: the adoring and reverent king, the busy town per-son, the singing angels, the poor shepherd?

St. John’s Mass & Wine Tradition—Dec. 27

Mass on Friday, December 27th will take place at 5:30pm followed by a wine tasting. No Mass at 8:15am. Please feel free to bring a bottle of wine with you to share after Mass! The wine is blessed (not consecrated) during Mass, and then all go downstairs afterwards to enjoy a little wine.

This is part of an ancient tradition. St. John was the only apostle not martyred, but they certainly tried to kill him. Tradition says that folks attempted to poison his wine, but, even after having drank the poisoned wine, he survived. St. John also wrote the Gospel of John, which talks a lot about wine and how it becomes the blood of Jesus. This gave birth to this beautiful tradition!

Christmas Mass Etiquette

See Christmas visitors as our greatest Christmas gift! Leave your home early- drive safely. Be extra patient in the parking lot- there will

most likely be visitors. Welcome people and say hello to people as

you arrive and approach the church building. Open the door and keep it held open for others. Sit up toward the front and scoot all the way

into the center of the pew. Be prepared to possibly have to split-up as a

family and sit in different pews. If the pews get to max capacity, please offer

your seat to mothers with children, the elderly or those with special needs.

After Mass, please go out of your way to shake hands and welcome individuals who are not regularly with us.

Be very attentive and patient as you leave the parking lot. No falling!

GOD bless you and keep you this Christmas Season!

It has far exceeded our expectations. Please believe us; The Holy Spirit is working with us. Thank you so very, very much.

Until January 6, 2020 We wish you all a Merry Christmas

A Christmas Prayer

May knowing JESUS, bring you PEACE to bless each day;

HOPE for each tomorrow; and JOY in your heart!

Christmas

A young mother, her eyes shining with fatigue, a father who finds himself alone with his pretty wife and baby, straightening the stable to make himself useful in some way; shepherds who bring cheese and perhaps also some curdled milk; sheep who look at their shepherds while bleating; a donkey who is eyeing his manger changed into a cradle; an adorable swaddled baby whom one calls Savior, Christ and Lord: This is the manifestation of the goodness and the tenderness of God. This is the most fantastic birth in the history of humani-ty, the one which changed the face of the world! This is how far God humbled and compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel!
