St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

In this week-end’s Gospel reading from Mark, Jesus is revealed to be the one who is sent to confront the evil one, the power of evil throughout the world. He has come to reveal the authority of God over all creation. Jesus is to call others and send them to reveal God’s love and authority.

A man with an unclean spirit presents himself to Jesus. This is the first time in Mark’s Gospel that Jesus is revealed as the one sent to confront such unclean, ungodly spirits.

There is a spirit that moves us to hold tightly to our own opinions without depending on any authority or self-reflection. Children learn the power of the word “mine” quite early in life. That is not an unclean spirit unless it is allowed to grow and control one’s life.

In this Gospel Jesus gives the person back himself with the dignity of being known by God. The “authority” with which Jesus speaks is the creative love of God. Jesus is the new Prophet, telling us not to be afraid or worried.

This week as we take time to pray, let us present our true self to God, the ungodly parts as well as the god-ly. And then reveal to others how God loves us all. Sr. Joan

St. Vincent’s St. Ann Altar Society

Now is the time to look ahead to Spring and the up-coming rummage sale tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 9th and Saturday, April 10th. You may bring your clean usable rummage to Sr. Joan's garage at your convenience.

How To Memorize the 7 Deadly Sins

Here’s how I teach the kids at school how to memo-rize the seven deadly (capital) sins:

S-L-A-P E-G-G Sloth Lust Anger Pride Envy Gluttony Greed

The Capital Sin of Gluttony

Last week’s sermon was about gluttony. Sins that fall under the umbrella of gluttony are as follows: eating too much, eating too fast, eating beyond one’s fill, looking to food or drink to solve one’s problems, eating too little, drinking too much, being too picky, wasting food, misusing food, any and all uses of illegal drugs, drinking under the age of 21, satisfying my every hunger, not fasting from time to time, not abstaining from meat on Fridays throughout the whole year, eating at the wrong times, breaking the Eucharistic fast (no food or drink except water one hour before Holy Communion). The most sinful form of this deadly sin is intoxication, by which we bring dishonor, disgrace, unhappiness, poverty or some kind or another, anger, impurity, and so much more to ourselves and those around us. The basic thing is this: we should not allow our lives to be dominated by our taste buds or our bellies. We eat to live, we don’t live to eat. Feasts and banquets are fine from time to time, but every day is not a feast!

Go to confession! Keep busy. Flee temptations. Get an accountability partner. Practice self-denial in all areas of life. Pray often.

How To Go To Confession

If the light is on and the door open, go in. Close the door. Kneel and say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned. My last confession was ____ days/weeks/months ago. These are my sins: ________. For these and any sins I cannot remember at this time, I am sorry.” You need to list your sins in number and kind as best you can (e.g., “I said God’s name in vain three times” or “I was impure with myself two times” or “I yelled at my husband four times” etc.), but you don’t need to tell a story behind the sins. Frequent confessions help us ensure we aren’t leaving any-thing out. Just name the sins and a ballpark number of times. Then, the priest will say some words and give you a penance. Then he will say, “Now please make your Act of Contrition.” The Act of Contrition is right there in the confessional so don’t worry if you don’t know it by heart. Then, the priest will absolve your sins and you have a blank slate again! The penance is done after you leave confession.

Sign up sheet is in the Church Narthex or contact Jim Kozinski at 317-850-5248 for further information.

E6 Catholic Men's Conference

The 6th annual E6 Catholic Men’s Conference will take place on February 27th and features 3 of the world’s most dynamic Catholic speakers: Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers, Jason Evert and Patrick Coffin. Due to anticipated social distancing limitations in 2021, this conference will take place at the St. Joseph campus of All Saints Parish with live streaming!

Watch it LIVE! Easy one-click online access for on-ly $10. Host a “watch party” with your friends, family, men’s group or entire parish. These tickets are available online by clicking: www.e6catholicmensconference.com/registration

The E6 Catholic Men’s Conference is designed to bring men into a deeper relationship with Christ and his Catholic Church through: A worthy celebration of the sacraments, engaging talks to strengthen their faith, opportunities for true fraternity and exposure to good resources to aid them in living their faith as dis-ciples of Christ. In a world that is losing a truly bibli-cal understanding of masculinity, fatherhood and brotherhood, this conference aims at equipping men to put on the Armor of God of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and stand as men of Christ.

Fr. Mike will be assisting with this event.

St. Joseph Consecration

We will be having a Consecration to St. Joseph group here at St. Joe. The consecration prayers start on February 15th, which is 33 days before his feast day on March 19th. More to come, but please plan to take part! A sign-up sheet will be available in the narthex after Masses in the coming weekends.

Life is Worth Living

“Peace be to you.” During my Exodus90 Journey I have not only been reading books but listening to many different podcasts. One podcast that has become a very close friend and inspiration to me is the podcast, “Life is Worth Living.” This is a series from the 1950s by Bishop Fulton Sheen that walks through some of the most complex theological truths in our tradition, doctrine, and faith and paints a simple picture of what they all mean!

There is a book about this which is the script of the whole series completely written out. I have used it and have gone through it slowly point by point, from proving God’s existence, understanding the true meaning of the resurrection and ascension, worldly issues, politics, sin, the sacraments, sex, prayer, judgement, salvation, and so much more! If you have an iPhone, the series is free on Apple Podcast!! He speaks with such vigor that comes from a solid and strong faith in our Lord that you can’t help but be inspired by it!

Fr. Mike mentioned to me that, just as the “Bible in a Year” podcast is the number one podcast this year, so too, Fulton Sheen’s “Life is Worth Living,” series was back in the 50s. Two amazing series, not only meant to empower and inspire Catholics but to help everyone in the world to discover the true meaning of life, which is only found in JESUS CHRIST! “God Love You!”

Word of God Sunday Procession Last Sunday

Last weekend was Word of God Sunday, which is always the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. To celebrate, after the 12:15pm Mass, the congregation took the enshrined Word of God around the block. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the presence of God’s Word in our world and at work in our community. Jesus is the Word Made Flesh….who dwells among us!

From Our Principal

Dear St. Joseph, As a long time educator, I truly believe that the combination of our Catholic faith and teachings with a rigorous education is the key to develop-ing well-rounded students and active community members. St. Joe School has been here for nearly 150 years. Both our faith and our school have stood the test of time. For generations, our children have excelled in the classroom and in the com-munity. The traditions, experiences, and faith-filled lessons, with your help, will continue for another 150 years. In this week’s bulletin you will find personal letters to you from our stu-dents, expressing their appreciation and grati-tude for supporting their Catholic education. Here at St. Joe, we build upon the strength of our past while looking toward our bright future. Our teachers, staff, and religious leaders show every day how they celebrate the successes of previous generations while embracing a chal-lenging academic curriculum. Throughout the next week, we will celebrate all the facets of a Catholic education: our parish, our students, our staff, our faith, and our com-munity. Please join us in celebrating all the gifts God has given us! Faithfully yours, Beth Borland Principal

News for Both Parishes Pope Francis’ Letter On St. Joseph

(continued from last week)

3. An obedient father

Joseph accepted Mary unconditionally. He trusted in the angel’s words. “The nobility of Joseph’s heart is such that what he learned from the law he made dependent on charity. Today, in our world where psychological, verbal and physical violence towards women is so evident, Joseph appears as the figure of a respectful and sensitive man. Even though he does not understand the bigger picture, he makes a decision to protect Mary’s good name, her dignity and her life. In his hesitation about how best to act, God helped him by enlightening his judgment”.[18]

Often in life, things happen whose meaning we do not understand. Our first reaction is frequently one of disappointment and rebellion. Joseph set aside his own ideas in order to accept the course of events and, mysterious as they seemed, to embrace them, take responsibility for them and make them part of his own history. Unless we are reconciled with our own history, we will be unable to take a single step forward, for we will always remain hostage to our expectations and the disappointments that follow.

The spiritual path that Joseph traces for us is not one that explains, but accepts. Only as a result of this acceptance, this reconciliation, can we begin to glimpse a broader history, a deeper meaning. We can almost hear an echo of the impassioned reply of Job to his wife, who had urged him to rebel against the evil he endured: “Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?” (Job 2:10).

Joseph is certainly not passively resigned, but coura-geously and firmly proactive. In our own lives, acceptance and welcome can be an expression of the Holy Spirit’s gift of fortitude. Only the Lord can give us the strength needed to accept life as it is, with all its contradictions, frustrations and disappointments.

Jesus’ appearance in our midst is a gift from the Father, which makes it possible for each of us to be reconciled to the flesh of our own history, even when we fail to understand it completely.

Just as God told Joseph: “Son of David, do not be afraid!” (Mt 1:20), so he seems to tell us: “Do not be afraid!” We need to set aside all anger and disappoint-ment, and to embrace the way things are, even when they do not turn out as we wish. Not with mere resigna-tion but with hope and courage. In this way, we become open to a deeper meaning. Our lives can be miraculously reborn if we find the courage to live them in accordance with the Gospel. It does not matter if everything seems to have gone wrong or some things can no longer be fixed. God can make flowers spring up from stony ground. Even if our heart condemns us,

“God is greater than our hearts, and he knows every-thing” (1 Jn 3:20).

Here, once again, we encounter that Christian realism which rejects nothing that exists. Reality, in its mysteri-ous and irreducible complexity, is the bearer of existen-tial meaning, with all its lights and shadows. Thus, the Apostle Paul can say: “We know that all things work together for good, for those who love God” (Rom 8:28). To which Saint Augustine adds, “even that which is called evil (etiam illud quod malum dicitur)”.[19] In this greater perspective, faith gives meaning to every event, however happy or sad.

Nor should we ever think that believing means finding facile and comforting solutions. The faith Christ taught us is what we see in Saint Joseph. He did not look for shortcuts, but confronted reality with open eyes and accepted personal responsibility for it.

Joseph’s attitude encourages us to accept and welcome others as they are, without exception, and to show special concern for the weak, for God chooses what is weak (cf. 1 Cor 1:27). He is the “Father of orphans and protector of widows” (Ps 68:6), who commands us to love the stranger in our midst.[20] I like to think that it was from Saint Joseph that Jesus drew inspiration for the parable of the prodigal son and the merciful father (cf. Lk 15:11-32). (continued next week)

St. Joseph News

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

We have some exciting news! At St. Joe, we are happy to announce that we will soon be introducing Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) as a way to help both our school children and our non-school children to grow in their faith and their relationship with Jesus. CGS helps with the religious formation of children 3-12 years of age. It originated in 1954 with the founding of the children’s center or “atrium” in Rome. Inspired by Montessori principles of education, it now extends to many countries around the world and has become quite popular here in the Archdiocese! The setting of CGS is the atrium. The atrium is a room (we have one in the school for this purpose!) which is dedicated to the spiritual formation of our young parishioners. The atrium is the specially prepared space where the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd takes place. In the atrium, children use items hand-crafted by parishioners to learn through touch and inter-action with the items about the Mass, the Sacraments, Bible Stories and Geography, History of the Life of Jesus, the Kingdom of God Parables, Practical Life, Art, and Prayer. The pictures to the right show some examples of this hands-on learning! What sets the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd apart from most other methods of learning about religion is that it has no “textbook” but rather many “hands on” materials. (Textbooks and prayers are given as supplements outside the atrium.) How does it work? Small groups of children come together for a weekly session in the atrium, which introduces them to the Bible and the Liturgy/Sacraments—the two pillars of our faith. The weekly sessions, led by an adult catechist and assistants, begin with just 30 minutes as the children are oriented to rhythm of the atrium. In time, the sessions last for up to 90 minutes. Another essential aspect of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is the adult catechist. Catechists participate in several hours of formation related to three developmental levels, ages 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12. We are looking for catechist volunteers to assist with the atrium for both our school and non-school kids. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Billy Cross or Beth Borland. There is training for catechists but the parish will happily cover those costs for all interested parties. “Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46: 10
