Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners, Did you know that there are lots of documented cases of Eucharistic miracles? While it’s true that every Mass includes a Eucharistic miracle, I’m talking here about miracles where the consecrated host bleeds.

One such miracle happened in 1996 and was witnessed by the bishop at the time, Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis). Bergoglio had the host tested by medical schools in Argentina. It was brought later to Columbia University here in the US to be examined by Dr. Frederick Zugibe, a medical exam-iner and cardiologist, who had no idea where it came from.

Here are some of the findings: The bloody substance was identified as human

heart tissue The tissue was identified as having come from

the heart’s left ventricle The blood type is AB+ and matches the blood

samples taken from the Shroud of Turin The chemistry and white cell count indicate that

the person died of extreme trauma. These results were then compared to the tissue from the Eucharistic miracle in Lanciano, Italy in 750 AD and from Sokolka, Poland in 2008. The extract-ed DNA prove them all to be from the same heart, from the same man.

Friends, it is time to renew our belief in and love for the Eucharist!!!!! This Lent, come closer to our Eucharistic Lord. Maybe in Daily Mass, maybe with some more time in the Adoration Chapel.

Jesus waits for you in the monstrance in our chapel every moment of every day. Please visit him there. It is a place of great peace, great renewal. If you’re not doing an hour, you should. Please sign up in the narthex this weekend. Spending an hour with Our Lord will do you great good.

Biography of the Saint of the Week

St. Thomas More Birth: February 7, 1478 Death: July 6, 1535 Feast Day: June 22 Patron of Lawyers, Statesmen & Politicians, Marriage St. Thomas More was born in London. As a young adult, he considered joining the Carthusian monks, but instead became a lawyer, writer, and statesman. He wore a hair shirt, for continual discomfort, as a voluntary penance. He married and was known to be a good father to his four children. After his first wife’s death, he remar-ried and adopted his stepdaughter. St. Thomas More rose in Parliament, was knighted, and eventu-ally named Lord Chancellor of England. He became part of King Henry VIII’s inner circle. King Henry VIII, after not receiving the marriage annulment he wanted from the pope, declared England’s separation from the Catholic Church. St. Thomas More and others were ordered to take an oath declaring the king was the head of the Church of England. St. Thomas More refused to accept the schism and was sent to the Tower of London. He was sentenced to death for treason; thus he died a martyrs death. Before his beheading, he said, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” His head was put on public display to warn other “traitors.” His body was buried at the Tower of London. His satirical novel, Utopia, remains a favorite today. The classic play and film “A Man for All Seasons” is a story of his life and worth watching. Reflection Questions from Rediscover the Saints

Spring Break is just around the corner or if you are planning a long weekend, it is a perfect time to keep up with your regular church offering by giving elec-tronically. Feast of St. Joseph Giving Tree

Where’s Fr. Mike This Weekend?

Fr. Mike is giving a parish mission in Iowa at a parish named St. Mary’s in Storm Lake, Iowa. He will be there through Tuesday night. Fr. Paul is taking all the Masses, except for the Mass in Spanish, which is covered by Fr. Mauro Rodas.

Stations of the Cross—Lenten Fridays

Join us at St. Joe every Friday during Lent at 6:00pm for Stations of the Cross. This year, they will be bilingual so as to enable all of us to pray them together. Please come to the K of C afterwards for a Fish Dinner! Let us follow after our Lord with the Cross, and let it bear us up to Heaven.

Dear Parishioners,

In this weekend’s Gospel Jesus is tempted by three temptations that we all have. Many people call them the three Ps—Power, Possessions, and Prestige. They are so dangerous because we can either have not enough of them or too much of them. For exam-ple, if you feel you have no power, then you don’t do anything to make yourself or anyone else better. This is not good. If you feel you have power and want more and lord it over others, that is not good. What is good is that you know you have enough power to change yourself and help others. The same is true for Possessions. You need some things, but if you have more than you need, one needs to share and give the excess away. Then we look at Prestige. When we were little and young, we may have done things to please our parents. Now that we are older and hopefully wiser, we are not motivated to do good just because we want people to think well of us. We do the right thing because it is the right thing to do and not because people are watching. As you can see, we need some of the three Ps, but not too much. This is why the Church asks us each Lent to do more prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer in secret helps with Prestige, Fasting reminds us that we need God’s help, and Almsgiving helps us share our Possessions. This week as we pray, let us ask God to help us live in moderation.

The 17th St. Vincent Charity Tea will be Saturday, April 25th. As in the past two years we have been blessed with the donation of a handmade quilt to raffle as part of our fundraising efforts. St. Joe Feast Celebration—Mar. 15

The annual St. Joe Feast celebration will be a bit different this year. This year, the celebration will take place on Sunday at St. Joseph following the 10:00am Mass. Mark your calendars! Offer Flowers & Candles for Deceased Loved Ones or Special Intentions

Remember that there are envelopes in the adoration chapel you can use to dedicate a week’s worth of altar candles or flowers in honor of a deceased loved one or special intentions. Place them in the metal candle box.

Faith Formation is for EVERYONE at St. Joseph and St. Vincent!

Faith formation is for everyone. That is to say, all our life we are seeking to be formed into Christ, into saints. This looks different at various stages of life:

Preschool through 5th Grade go to one or more of the following: St. Joe School Religious Ed classes at SJ meet Sundays from

11:00am - 12:00pm Religious Ed classes at SV meet Wednesdays

from 6:15pm - 7:30pm As a supplement, Children's Liturgy of the Word

also takes place every Sunday during the 8:30am and 10:00am Masses. All preschoolers, kinder-garteners, and first graders are welcome!

Middle Schoolers go to: Sunday morning Religious Ed at St. Joseph Wednesday night Religious Ed at St. Vincent As a supplement, Middle Schoolers are encour-

aged to attend the monthly enrichment opportuni-ties (social, service, and spiritual). Details to be shared in classes.

Confirmation Candidates (generally HS freshmen) go to Confirmation Preparation. St. Joe and St. Vincent do Confirmation preparation

together. The Confirmation class meets the First and Third Sundays at St. Joseph.

The Fourteen Holy Helpers are a group of saints venerated together in Roman Catholicism because their intercession is believed to be particularly effective, especially against various diseases. This group of Nothelfer ("helpers in need") originated in the 14th century at first in the Rhineland, largely as a result of the epidemic (probably of bubonic plague) that became known as the Black Death. Seek the help of these saints...it’s powerful!
