ANZAC 2015
To commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, there will be a service
for school representatives on 24 April 2015. This will consist of a March and a service at
ANZAC Peace Park. There will be limited attendees due to the numbers of schools in the
district: St Joseph’s allocation is 150 places.
A service at the College will take place simultaneously; this will allow all of our students to
commemorate and pray for the Souls of ANZAC.
On ANZAC Day the parade is expected to be large, consequently there will only be places for
approximately one hundred students from all schools.
On Sunday 26 April the Parish is planning an ANZAC weekend commemorative Mass - details
of this will follow.
A reminder that the first Family Mass of the year is on Saturday, 21 February at Holy Family
Church commencing at 6.00pm.

Project Compassion 2015
Project Compassion is Caritas Australia’s annual fundraising and aware-
ness-raising appeal, bringing thousands of Australians together in soli-
darity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and
uphold dignity. Running through the six weeks of Lent each year, Pro-
ject Compassion is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the
faith, love and generosity of caring supporters, all in the name of justice and peace. It is the
lifeblood of Caritas Australia.
The theme for Project Compassion 2015 is “Food for Life”.
Food is essential for all life, yet many of the world’s poorest people do not have food securi-
ty. That means they live from day-to-day, uncertain of how to afford or how to access their
next meal. Without food, the rest of life is impossible to contemplate: how can you plan for
the future or educate your children when you fear you will be hungry?
As Pope Francis says: “It is a well-known fact that current levels of production are sufficient,
yet millions of people are still suffering and dying of starvation. This is truly scandalous.”
Over the Lenten period we will bring you stories from Fiji, Niger, Indonesia, Peru, Nepal and
Australia that will show how your support helps people to grow and access food for life.

Congratulations to our Term One
winner of the car park raffle. Paul
Jacob, Adam’s Dad from Year One,
was very excited to hear that he
had won. Thank you to everyone
for respecting that this car bay is
now his to use for the duration of
Term One.
St Joseph’s Day is coming up in
March and we would like to decide
if we are going to use the coffee
machine at the fair, but we need
someone to operate it. It will be
for a couple of hours from around
lunch time. Parents of younger
students, you will be required to
assist your child at the fair, so we
are asking a volunteer, or two, of
older students to give us a hand.
While on the subject of helpers,
we are also asking for some par-
ents to give us a hand in selling
raffle tickets before and after

Middle and Senior School Inter-House Swimming Carnival
Students in Middle and Senior Schools will be participating in the Inter-House Swimming
Carnival on Wednesday 25 February 2015, commencing at approximately 9.30am. The car-
nival is a combination of championship races, which determine year group champions, and
novelty events that contribute to the Inter-House Shields.
Students will be transported to and from the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre by bus, re-
turning to the College in time for the normal end of the school day. Students are required to
wear their full College sports uniform and their House colours. Board shorts or racing bath-
ers are fine for the Carnival. One piece bathers are required, brief bikini bathers are not
permitted. If students only have two piece bathers they are required to wear a rash vest.
Parents/Guardians and supporters are most welcome to attend the Carnival. Any parents or
guardians who are able to assist at the Carnival would be greatly appreciated and are invited
to contact Mr Scott Hodgen through the College Office as soon as possible.
It is a College expectation that all students attend the Carnival. Parents who wish to discuss
a planned absence for that day will be required to schedule a meeting with the Principal, Mr
Bradley Hall, prior to the Carnival. Students are required to stay for the duration of the
whole Carnival. (PLEASE NOTE: Parents/Guardians are reminded that students can only leave
directly from ALAC once Parents/Guardians have personally informed their child’s Home
Room teacher and signed the attendance register kept by each Home Room teacher. Par-
ents / Guardians MAY NOT take a child other than their own from the Carnival without
written permission from a Parent/Guardian of the other child.)
Lunch orders from the ALAC café can be completed at the ALAC canteen on the morning of
the Carnival. The College canteen will also take lunch orders on the Carnival day and will
deliver these lunches to ALAC.
I look forward to a successful and enjoyable Swimming Carnival. Please contact me if you
have any questions about the day.

Workplace Learning Induction Seminar 10 February 2015
The Induction Seminar for twelve Year Twelve and twenty-one Year Eleven Workplace Learn-
ing students was held at the Stirling Club on the afternoon of Tuesday 10 February. The thir-
ty-three students with their teachers, Mrs Rosanna Page and Mrs Ann Heward, had the op-
portunity to listen to three keynote speakers who had a wealth of valuable information to
assist young people to make a successful transition from school to work.
Ms Bernadette Duell from Latro Laywyers addressed the issue of interpersonal skills in the
workplace. Bernadette informed the students that in her research in preparing her talk she
found that the top three skills that business organisations recognised as essential skills were
teamwork, communication and responsibility and accountability.

What is Ash Wednesday? Why do
we have to celebrate it?
The other term for Ash Wednesday
is the ‘Day of Ashes’. The use of
ashes was adapted to mark the
beginning of Lent, the 40-day prep-
aration period (not including Sun-
days) for Easter. The ritual is
found in the earliest editions of the
Gregorian Sacramentary, which
dates at least to the eighth centu-
ry.
Historically, it can trace back to the
Old Testament times, as it was
used for mourning, mortality and
penance. One concrete example
can be found in the story of Job
(whose story was written between
the 5th and 7th centuries B.C.),
when he repented in sackcloth and
ashes. Likewise, Jesus said the
same, "If the miracles worked in
you had taken place in Tyre and
Sidon, they would have reformed
in sackcloth and ashes long
ago" (Mt 11:21).

Bernadette told the students that the skills of working in a team and knowing their role in
the team started with their involvement with team sports. Most students present indicat-
ed that they played team sports on a regular basis. Bernadette highlighted the role of key
players, such as those attacking and defending, and their understanding of their role was
essential for the success of the team.
With communication Bernadette told the students that what they said was only seven
percent of what they were communicating. Ninety three percent came from the tone of
their voice and body language. The latter is very important in conveying a message and
this is what employers use to gauge an employee’s ability to contribute to their organisa-
tion.
The skills of responsibility and accountability underpin the success of any team and it is
imperative that as an employee the students understand this. Bernadette informed the
group that it is alright to make a mistake, in fact the best learning comes from the mis-
takes that are made, but students need to admit when they are wrong. She also remind-
ed students that if they say they are going to do something to do it! Walk the walk, don’t
just talk the talk – remember actions speak louder than words.
Scott Leary, Albany City Motors, covered the expectations from employer perspective
with respect to the all-important resume and interview. It was a timely reminder to stu-
dents that their resume should be succinct and the information it contained was appro-
priate to the position they were applying for. It was therefore important for students to
find out the criteria they had to address for a particular job. Scott also stressed that they
submit their resume personally as this indicates the level of their interest in the business
and the position for which they have applied.
The interview process provides more information of suitability for a particular position.
Scott told the students of actions they need to undertake before the interview if they are
to be competitive in the job market. From researching the company and the salary they
should expect for the position applied for, to making sure that they know how to get to
the interview.
A casually dressed Seamus Ronayne from Albany Community Pharmacy opened his talk
by asking the students who they would employ – Scott who was dressed in a suit or him.
Seamus considered the differences between a career and a job, stressing that these days
people no longer have a job or occupation for life. A career involved following one’s inter-
est and citing his career, Seamus said that his interest was problem solving and the jobs
that he had had reflected this interest. His current jobs of pharmacy and developing a
computer programme for the health department underpin this interest.
To have a successful career required planning, an active process in which students need-
ed to be informed and do the necessary learning. This would enable them to make in-
formed choices to develop their career pathway. Seamus stressed that they also must
have the right attitude and be determined to undertake whatever course of action was
required. Seamus reinforced the importance of the skill of being responsible and account-
able for the progress of their career, and being prepared to make career changes when
appropriate.

Chaplain’s Corner Cont...
In our present liturgy, we use
ashes made from the burned
palm branches distributed on the
Palm Sunday of the previous
year. The priest blesses the ash-
es and imposes them on the
foreheads of the faithful, making
the sign of the cross and saying,
"Remember, man you are dust
and to dust you shall return," or
"Turn away from sin and be faith-
ful to the Gospel."
As we begin this holy season of
Lent in preparation for Easter, we
must remember the significance
of the ashes we have received:
We mourn and do penance for
our sins. We again convert our
hearts to the Lord, who suffered,
died and rose for our salvation.
We renew the promises made at
our baptism, when we died to an
old life and rose to a new life
with Christ. Finally, mindful that
the kingdom of this world passes
away, we strive to live the king-
dom of God now and look for-
ward to its fulfillment in Heaven.
Finally quoting “Carpe Diem” Seamus told the students that they must be prepared to
“seize the day”. Life will present opportunities and it is important that students not
only recognised these but also that they were prepared to grab them.
Daniel Baker from ATC Work Smart had the hard task of being the final speaker and
spoke to the students about traineeships and apprenticeships outlining the difference
between the two. Daniel also outlined the progression from Workplace Learning to a
School Based traineeship.
The speakers were thanked by the student group for the time they had given to address them and were invited to afternoon
tea. Some students took this opportunity to speak with the speakers informally.
Judging by the animated chatter over afternoon tea, there is no question that the students had much to reflect on and hopeful-
ly will “seize the day” and act on some of the suggestions before the end of the year.

2014 Language and Cultural Tour
Late in 2013 a meeting for the first ever St Joseph's Language and Cultural Tour was held. After seeing the numbers that ar-
rived and expressed their interest, as well as their support for the tour, it was decided to be a worthwhile endeavour and plan-
ning began.
Throughout 2014 we had weekly meetings discussing the culture of France and Italy and learning the basics of the lan-
guages. French and Italian were taught by two of our teachers - Ms Hill who is well versed in French and Italian with the help
of our French exchange student Laurianne and Dr Runco – our Italian and historical expert. Both Ms Hill and Dr Runco accom-
panied us on the tour along with Mr Hall, our Principal.
We also trialled some of the food, which in its own right was good but did not prepare us for the variety and deliciousness of
French and Italian food.

Great views over Perugia
What followed was an amazing 21 day journey into six different cities and two countries. Paris for four days before going to
Italy and staying our first night in Venice, we then moved on to Milan (five days), Florence (three days), Perugia (four days) and
ending our trip in Rome for six days.
We were introduced to a whole new world. We explored the architec-
ture, art, history, food and culture, as much as possible, during our trip.
We had a family stay and lived like Italians for a while. We visited a
school and were given a huge welcome. Using our limited French and
Italian we realised we have a lot more to learn compared to the stu-
dents command of English in the school that we visited.
We went to Church in centuries old buildings, saw Pope Francis at St
Peter’s and learned a great deal. We also caught the travel
bug……..we’ll be back.
