The Epiphany of the Lord "Behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying 'Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.'" How strange to journey so far for perhaps so little. Of course the magi go to the capitol city. Of course they entreat with King Herod. Of course this is where they expect newborn royalty to be. But where is the child? "In Bethlehem of Judea," the scribes say. And so the magi go on to what is yet another Christmas miracle. We don't know where the magi met the Christ Child, but it cannot have been lavish. Perhaps it was the stable. Perhaps it was a small hovel Joseph had found to wait out the census. But it would have been the home of a laborer, worn and threadbare. Here, in this unassuming abode, the magi are still "overjoyed...they prostrated themselves and did him homage." Have you ever gotten to the end of a great work and found the results to be underwhelming? How did you respond? Were you disappointed or elated at God's providence and your upended expectations? The magi journeyed hundreds of miles over treacherous terrain to pay homage to royalty they have seen prophesied in the stars. They encountered an ordinary family displaced from their home. This Sunday, the magi are an example for us. Can we see God in the unexpected? Do we encounter Him in the person who doesn't fit our expectations of propriety? Do we revere Christ's presence in the poor? Or do we expect to meet God only in places of honor and esteem? This week, ask God for the grace to honor Him in the unexpected places and unassuming people. He is waiting for you! Epiphany of the Lord The song "We Three Kings" details the gifts of the Magi, but do you know what you're singing? "Born a king on Bethlehem's plan, gold I bring to crown Him again." This one is the most straightforward - gold symbolizes the Kingship of Christ. "Myrrh is mine: its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom." Myrrh is an embalming spice. Already at Christ's birth, we have the symbolic reminder of his death. "Frankincense to offer have I. Incense owns a deity nigh." In many religious traditions, incense symbolizes prayers rising to heaven. In some pagan traditions, it is thought to help "call down" the deity. The gift of frankincense symbolizes Jesus' role as the Great High Priest, sanctifying the world through his sacrifice.

If you or a family member have a cold or the flu… If you have a suppressed immune system, are feeling unwell or have family members or housemates who are unwell, please receive Communion only in the hand. Receiving ONLY the host is receiving the FULL Body and Blood of Christ. We ask that you don’t receive the host on the tongue. The transfer of germs is more likely when Communion is administered on the tongue because accidental contact may be made between the ministers finger and your saliva. So, too, with receiving from the cup. The Sign of Peace may be offered as a nod or verbal greeting.

Birthright Birthright, a local pregnancy support service in Ballston Spa, has moved to 1490 Saratoga Road (Route 50) in Ballston Spa. The new location is 1.5 miles south of our previous location on Front Street. We are before Mangino’s car dealership on the left-hand side of the road just past the intersection of Routes 50 and 67. Our mailing address is still P.O. Box 661, Ballston Spa, NY 12020, which should be used when sending donations and any correspondence. Our phone number is the same, 518-885-4117. New office hours are Monday thru Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or any other time by appointment. Birthright has been serv-ing the Capital Region for 41 years and relies on the generosity of its volunteers and donors. All of our services are free and con-fidential, including self-administered pregnancy tests, diapers, formula, layettes, and essential baby items.”

Everyday Stewardship

"The Story of the Other Wise Man" by Henry Van Dyke was first published in 1895. It tells the fictional story of Artaban, a fourth wise man who began a journey to visit Jesus, the newborn King. Unlike his fellow Magi, he failed to make it there for the birth of Jesus because he kept pausing to help various people in need. In fact, it took him about 33 years of searching before his quest comes to an abrupt end when he is hit in the head with a falling roof shingle. His final breath takes place in Jerusalem near the place where Jesus is being crucified. As he lies dying, he hears the voice of Jesus telling him that the gifts he has given along the way to "the least of these" he has actually given to Jesus himself. If you have never read this story or seen the made-for-television movie based on the tale, you really should seek it out. It is a story that reminds us of a profound truth: Jesus himself rests in the lives of all those around us in need. In the story, it was the wise man's constant response to a stewardship call that prevented him from getting where he wanted to go. In the end, where he needed to go was more significant than where he thought he should go. If we live lives of generosity and graciousness, we may find our-selves on constant detours from the road on which we are travel-ing. It is in the detours and the unexpected circumstances of our journey that often times we find our true purpose in life. We think God is somewhere we must travel to, when in reality, God is closer than we think in the least likely of places.

Grief & Bereavement Support Group Our mission is to welcome all people to God’s love as they are dealing with a loss in their life. In most cases it will be a loss of a loved one through death. But support for any type of loss will be provided in a sensitive, non-judgmental and supportive way. Our next gathering will be Monday, January 28 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the rectory. The group will meet every last Monday of the month 6:30 to 7:30. In St Joseph’s rectory.

Offertory Envelopes If you wish to claim your church offerings on your tax returns, you will be required to show proof with cancelled checks or with a statement from your church. In order for us to issue a statement, you will have to place your offerings in a marked envelope and we will keep track of your 2019 offerings and issue a statement in January 2020. Contact the office if you would like to receive envelopes.

Are You Registered? Each year we ask every parish household to be sure they are registered and that we have the correct/updated mailing address, main phone number and email address. For new registrants, we also ask if you’d like to receive contribution envelopes and the diocesan newspaper, The Evangelist. All email addresses are added to our database to receive email communications from the parish through Flocknote. This is our main means of communicating to everyone. Urgent news and changes to mass times will be shared this way. To register or update your information, visit our parish website at StJosephsChurchGreenfieldCenter.org and click on the link halfway down the page on the left side, “Click Here…” You can also email or call the parish office and leave a message.

Thank You for Your Generosity!
