St. Joseph Parish The Vigil September 16th, 2018 ROONEY TUNES: CATECHETICAL SUNDAY: The theme for this celebraon is ‘Enlisng Witnesses for Jesus Christ’. At the 10:00 Mass, those who have been commissioned as catechists, by the parish, will stand to receive the blessing. The blessing, which prays that the Catechists will model in their own lives what they seek to pass on to our children. It’s worth keeping in mind that the Church consistently reminds us that parents are the first teachers of their children in the ways of our faith. When you brought your babies for Bapsm you promised to raise them in the pracce of our faith. When the child becomes an adult – parents can’t be held responsible for the choices their sons or daughters make regarding a faith commit- ment. Many parents are saddened to report that their children are leaving the Church aſter preparing and celebrang the sacraments, aſter years of Catholic School or parish Faith Formaon. Figures for Bapsms, Church weddings and weekly Mass aendance are down. Recently I heard one of the Bishop’s say that this proves we don’t brainwash our children, but educate them to make a choice! Most of us know that our kids will seldom do as we say but, more oſten than not, will do what they see us do! By the example of our lives, may we be among those who are enlisng witnesses for Jesus Christ! FAITH FORMATION: Instrucons for the children will resume this Monday and Tuesday (17/18 September). Monday at 6:30 pm and Tuesday at 5:30 pm. Both evenings we will begin with the celebraon of Mass. It would be a holy and wholesome thing if, instead of dropping the kids off, that you would come and join us for Mass. Mass will be offered for the spiritual and material welfare of the parish. I realize, that for some parents, that hours the children are here give you a chance to draw your breath. One mother told me she uses the hour to balance her check book! TRAPPED CHILDREN: Last month, we watched, mesmerized, as the whole world came together to free the boys trapped in the cave at Chiang Rai. The finest experse and technology from many naons, as well as the prayers of millions, were mobilized in a concerted effort that showed what our com- mon humanity is capable of doing. Elsewhere, children are bombed, starved, kidnapped, separated from their parents, trafficked, imprisoned and abused. The choice, in either case, is in our hands. May God forgive us for not doing what we should be doing! SAINT AUGUSTINE: Your heart is filled with pain, but you do not suffer. You are at once angry and at peace. You change your works, but not your plan….You are my God, my delight, my life. Can our words about you really say anything? But woe to those who are silent in your praise, even though those who are the most eloquent cannot find words to describe you! Many thanks to those who have been watering the flowers and pulling the weeds! The parish grounds reflect your hard work and your faith- fulness! With every blessing of peace. Father Rooney.

Faith Formation Corner

CSA Report

Our weekly Faith Formation program has traditionally been a wonderful way for the children of our parish, who aren’t able to attend our school, to learn about the teachings of the Church. Seeing these children grow in their relationship with God is very rewarding. We have over 50 adult and teen volunteers who dedicate a few hours each week to make this happen. We are THANKFUL for them and ask for God’s continued blessing upon them, as well as our St. Joseph School Teacher’s who do the same thing each and every day with their students. May God bless our St. Joseph School Teachers and our Faith Formation Volunteers this year! This week is the first week of Faith Formation classes. We will begin in the church with Mass for both parents and students. God’s Blessings for the week ahead, Dennae Petrlich Cataldo Director of Faith Formation [email protected]

Dear St. Joseph Parishioners, This graph shows the status of the CSA Collection as of September 5, 2018. Our goal set by the Archdiocese is $88,673. To date we've received 105 pledges totaling $53,137.70. The CSA Drive is open through the end of September 2018, for pledges. St. Joseph Parish currently has approximately 900 active parishioner families, which means that less than one-third of our families have donated. We know we can do better than this. Please go to the AOD's website (aod.org) to see the Archbishop's video which outlines all the good the mon-ey raised through the CSA does for our parishes, schools, CYO activities, the needy, etc. Please prayerfully consider making a pledge, in any amount, to this very worthwhile cause. Lastly, please note that any shortfall as of September 30, 2018 will be paid by the parish out of its general operating budget. Thank you and God Bless You.

Reverence Every Person

God’s ways are not our ways. We know this. It is challenging for us to even consider God’s ways, let alone actually do things God’s way. As far as the heavens are above the earth, so are God’s thoughts above our thoughts and God’s ways above our ways, according to the Sacred Scriptures. And yet, the life of faith is precisely an invitation to do things God’s way. Jesus pretty explicitly invites us to do this. The preach-ing and teaching and healing and even the life of Jesus constitute this invitation for us to embrace God’s ways of doing things. We are sometimes skeptical about God’s methods. We may even be fearful, stubborn, lazy, foolish, or (God forbid) arrogant enough to completely reject God’s ways of doing things. One helpful compact term we Christians use to describe God’s way of doing things is “The Gospel.” We have been given this Gospel, the Good News of our salvation, from Jesus. When Jesus tried to share the hard details of this Gospel with His disciples, Peter immediately rejected the very idea. The interaction between Jesus and Peter is recounted in today’s reading at Mass. In that story, Jesus tells us what we need to do in order to be able to do things God’s way. Jesus tells us to follow Him. He will be the guide; He will be the example; He will demonstrate for all of us how it is done. In the reading, Jesus tells us we must deny ourselves. We must give up our ways and our thoughts

if we want to do God’s will. We have to let go of what we want, let go of our plan, and release our hold on the things we thought were important but ultimately weren’t. This is at the heart of our Catholic faith, that we surrender to God. That our life and our values completely, unreservedly, and unconditionally surrender to God is a key facet of having religious faith. This kind of thing will not happen without sacrifice. Jesus promised to show us the way by His life and so He demonstrates the greatest act of surrender to God’s will. He faithfully and obediently enacts God’s plan of salvation. He provides the perfect sacrifice. He dies on the cross. Jesus’ noble act of surrender to God shows us how to consign our will to God’s way. So, we follow Jesus, which re-quires us to deny ourselves, in or-der to be able to “take up our cross” whatever God decides that cross will be. We have many different individual and personal crosses to bear. But, now we have a certain cross that we must bear together. This is the improvement, re-energizing, and re-orienting of the whole Church. Archbishop Vigneron has provided us with a plan, a blueprint, a pastoral letter detailing how we as an archdiocese will go forward to make a radical overhaul of the Church’s culture. We need a plan to better re-focus our faith and our hearts on the work of evangelization. This plan was distributed to all the parishes of

the Archdiocese of Detroit in 2017 and it is called “Unleash the Gospel.” Peter began to argue with Jesus and disagree with His plan when Peter heard what kind of sacrifice would be involved, but we must be braver than that. Please come to hear all about…

“Unleash the Gospel” This Tuesday September 18th at

7pm in the Church basement where a representative from the

archdiocese will be explaining and discussing this pastoral docu-

ment from the archbishop with all of us.

All are welcome!

Peace and Blessings, Scott Anastasia

St Joseph Sports

St Joseph School

The Cardinals were on the court and on the pitch last weekend with plenty of volleyball and soccer action. JV #2 volleyball played with great enthusiasm but dropped their matches at Gesu and at home against St. Linus. JV#1 volleyball swept to a 2-0 win at St. Pius and at home on Sunday, had a very exciting 2-1 win over All Saints. After losing the first set, they came back and won the second to force a third and deciding set and pushed through for a 15-12 win. Varsity volleyball lost their first league game at St. Pius but at home on Sunday, they came up with a come from behind 2-1 win, taking the deciding third set in a decisive 15-2 win. Soccer returned to St. Joseph with the Cardinals participating in the pre-season Holy Ghost Tournament in Monroe. The Cardinals dropped all three matches, 4-0 to Christ the King, 4-0 to MCES and 4-1 to Guardian Lutheran. Thomas Szczechowski scored the Cardinal's first goal of the year.

Next weekend, Cardinal soccer will play Holy Ghost Lutheran at SMCC's field in Monroe on Saturday, September 22 at 10 am and will play a home game at Gabriel Richard on Sunday at 2 pm. Next Sunday is also a home date for Cardinal Volleyball with games for all three teams featuring matches with Gesu and St. Pius.

Happy September! First Grade was welcomed with 18 students this year, with 5 students being new to our school. We have been working hard in our class and adjusting to our new schedules and classroom work. This week in Religion we have focused on belonging to Jesus’ Church and being Catholics. The first graders have been practicing the proper way to make the sign of the cross and the many ways people follow Jesus. Students shared many examples of how they follow Jesus, such as praying, helping others, listening and caring for those in need. We also read about “The Good Shepherd” and discussed how Jesus is like the good shepherd and we are like the sheep. Blessings, Mrs. Mullins and the First Grade Class

Daily Readings and Reflections

September 16th TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDI-

NARY TIME The answer this time

We evolve. This is one of the most grate-ful things about existence, that we’re

not required to remain stuck in our stuff. We grow, learn, and adapt through the

years. Our relationship with the Holy One evolves too. So, when Jesus asks us once more—Who do you say that I am?

—our reply may well be different this time. Is Jesus still the God someone gave

us long ago? Has Jesus become more real and necessary: as a friend, brother,

healer, teacher, fellow sufferer, or cham-pion? Is Jesus Lord of our lives, judge,

irritant, role model, or inspiration? Today's readings:

Isaiah 50:5-9a; James 2:14-18; Mark 8:27-35 (131).

“And Jesus asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ ”

MEMORIAL OF ROBERT BELLARMINE, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

Make care for the poor a cardinal virtue The Italian Jesuit Robert Bellarmine (d.

1621) is rightly remembered for his bril-liance—he was made a cardinal by Pope

Clement VIII on the grounds that “he had not his equal for learning.” But while Bellarmine wore the red hat and had an apartment in the Vatican, he refused to live the high life. He maintained his aus-tere disciplines, spending the bare mini-mum on his own needs and eating only the food available to the poor. It is said

that he even used the tapestries he found in his Vatican apartment to clothe

poor people, remarking, “The walls won’t catch cold.” Pray that all the lead-ers of the church share Bellarmine’s vi-sion of what it means to be a servant of

God. Today's readings:

1 Corinthians 11:17-26, 33; Luke 7:1-10 (443).

“I did not consider myself worthy to come to you, but say the word and let

my servant be healed.”

September 18th What you do for the least helps the

most One of Jesus’ greatest gifts was his abil-ity to comfort people who were suffer-ing. He did that by performing miracles, of course, but also by simply accepting

each person he encountered. Jesus’ method was simple, but 2,000 years later it is apparent that we still have

much to learn about how to treat the

most fragile and vulnerable among us. The French geophysicist Xavier Le

Pichon, in a profoundly personal and moving essay titled “Ecce Ho-

mo” (“Behold Humanity”), writes that when people turn toward the suffering

ones in their midst, the entire communi-ty is transformed. Take some time today

to read Le Pichon’s essay and hear his extraordinary life story at onbeing.org.

You won’t be sorry. Today's readings:

1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-31a; Luke 7:11-17 (444).

“When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, ‘Do not

weep.’"

September 19th MEMORIAL OF JANUARIUS, BISHOP,

MARTYR They’re there when you need them The bishop Saint Januarius, who died

near the beginning of the fourth century, is known primarily for the San Gennaro festival named after him and for a fa-

mous phenomenon: the liquefying of a vial said to be his blood that has been

going on several times a year in Naples, Italy for centuries. Apparently, he was an

inspiring presence even before that. When Saint Paulinus of Nola was dying in 431, he called out to Saints Januarius and Martin of Tours, “who a little while ago were speaking to me and promising me that soon I would join them,” a biog-raphy says. Saints are always available.

Pray to them for help and let them serve as examples of love and service in your

life. Today's readings:

1 Corinthians 12:31—13:13; Luke 7:31-35 (445).

“Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts.”

September 20th

MEMORIAL OF ANDREW KIM TAE-GŎN, PRIEST, PAUL CHŎNG HA-SANG, AND

COMPANIONS, MARTYRS What they did for love

“Love makes the whole difference be-tween an execution and martyrdom,” Evelyn Underhill once said. As one of

Christianity’s renowned commentators on mysticism, she should know. The

saints we call mystics are hailed for their utmost trust in God’s love, their sheer

abandonment to its power. But martyrs take it one step further—abandonment to even the point of death. Such devo-

tion is “not an affair of red cassocks and authorized hymnbooks,” Underhill

wrote, “but a burning and consuming

fire.” As we remember today nearly 10,000 Korean martyrs, most of them

laypeople, who were tortured and killed for their love of Christ, whose blood

built the church in Korea, reflect on what real love looks like and what helps it

grow. Today's readings:

1 Corinthians 15:1-11; Luke 7:36-50 (446).

“You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with oint-

ment.”

September 21st FEAST OF MATTHEW, APOSTLE, EVAN-

GELIST I’m the tax man

Before Matthew was an apostle, he was a tax collector. Tax collectors as a rule

are not the most popular people on the block, but they were despised in Roman-

occupied Jewish lands, where they did the dirty work of collecting the Empire’s taxes. Jesus’ desire to mingle with such

people scandalized the religious authori-ties, but Jesus was more interested in being with “tax collectors and sinners” than with the righteous, who felt they

had nothing to learn from Jesus and no need to reform their lives. If we want

Jesus to feel comfortable in our homes and hearts, it is good for us to guard

against righteousness, the temptation to elevate ourselves by judging others.

Today's readings: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13; Matthew 9:9-13

(643). “Why does your teacher eat with tax

collectors and sinners?”

September 22nd MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN

MARY Run like a girl

The spiritual life is often described in sporting terms: Fight the good fight, run

the race, win the crown. These come from an ancient Greek culture immersed in the excitement of athletic games and

competition. But there are other ways to triumph, spiritually speaking. Mary of

Nazareth employed the gospel paradox of the weak surpassing the strong

through utter reliance on God’s promis-es. Her “race” involved domestic life,

birth and death, security and danger and challenge. Competition isn’t the only

way to win. Today's readings:

1 Corinthians 15:35-37, 42-49; Luke 8:4-15 (448).

"Knowledge of the mysteries of the king-dom of God has been granted to you.”

CSA FUNDED MINISTRIES: September 15/16: Office of Evangelization and Catechesis This Sunday is Catechetical Sunday, a day set aside to affirm and support the work of the many men, women, and young adults who teach our faith in parishes and Catholic schools throughout our Archdiocese. This year’s Catechetical Sunday theme is “Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ.” Through baptism, we are called to hand on the faith and be a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday allows us all to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith. Your CSA gifts support religious education directors and their staffs through the work of the archdiocesan Office of Catechetics, which provides consultation concern-ing policy, curriculum guidelines, and text selection, as well as professional growth and formation opportuni-ties and certification.
