What is an Endowment? An endowment is a permanent fund that is created and invested for the benefit of a particular organization or cause. Grants are made only from the investment income earned by the fund. The endowment’s capital may never be drawn upon and so it is never depleted. Since endowments are maintained forever, a gift to an endowment is truly a gift that continues forever. Through the endowment, you are providing for future gen-erations. Imagine knowing that because of your decision today, your parish will re-ceive a grant every year, even beyond 100 years from now. To learn more, please call 408.995.5219 or e-mail [email protected]. There will be a second collection for our parish endowment fund at all masses on the weekend of our parish feast day, Sep-tember 14-15. To contribute to our endowment fund now, please follow this link: giving.cfoscc.org/DonateNow

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this past Thurs-day s solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the an-cient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resur-rection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ s victory over death. In the tradition of the East, Au-gust 15 is the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the Falling Asleep of the God-bearer. There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary s life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary s death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary s body rising to heaven. She greeted him as my friend, and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, re-ceived a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the

ON FIRE Jesus intentions to set the earth on fire and to cause division were disturbing to his listeners, and may be disturbing to us, too. In the Old Testament, fire was seen as the means of God s purification and judgment, truly a gift to the people. The fire destroys our illusions about ourselves and our behaviors. It burns away obstacles to a loving rela-tionship with God. God s fire melts any institutions, beliefs, or practices that enable evil and injustice. Jesus came to expose evil and thereby force decisions about God s true nature and purposes. Divisions emerged because of the diverse choices people made. Does Jesus represent some demonic power, or the true God? Do we fight to preserve current attitudes and behaviors, or do we enter the path offered by Jesus? In evok-ing fire, Jesus is certainly not suggesting violence or disre-spect toward others. Jesus lights a fire, and then in his death, bears its results. It is a fire of sacrificial love, melting cold hearts and bringing light to a darkened world.

LISTEN TO JESUS AND THE PROPHETS Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to perse-cute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Tes-tament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to un-derstand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen.

OCCUPANCY The value of life does not depend upon the place we occupy. It depends upon how we occupy that place.

Stewardship at St. Joseph of Cuper no

In today’s second reading, St. Paul encourages us not to grow weary or lose heart, but to persevere in follow-ing Jesus. Our willingness to give of ourselves, even in the face of conflict and division, is one way to measure our discipleship. How well do I measure up in my giv-ing?

Stewardship Prayer Rev. Gregory Kimm, 2009 God rich in kindness and generous in love, You call us to be your people, a church, a community of faith. You have entrusted St. Joseph of Cuper no Parish to our care. Help us to be good stewards, always worthy of your trust. As you are a en ve to the needs of each of us, Enable us to be a en ve to the needs of our parish, using the gi s you have given us not just for our own good, but for the good of all. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Brother, and in the Spirit, who makes us one. Amen!
