MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” That’s the Responsorial Psalm for today. I think many of us have uttered those (or similar) words depending on our life situation; times we’ve felt isolated, abandoned, or simply can’t make sense of what’s going on in our lives. So, we might ask, ‘Did Jesus felt abandoned by the Father as he hung on the cross?’ One commentary noted that just as if we were to say, ‘Our Father who art in heaven’ most people could finish that prayer because as a little child we memorized it because of its importance in our faith. The same can be said for the psalms in Jesus’ time. Like those prayers we memorized from childhood, the Jewish people would have internalized the psalms and when hearing Jesus begin the psalm, they would have been able to finish it, like we could finish the ‘Our Father.’ The Psalm Jesus is quoting is Psalm 22. It is not that God abandoned Jesus, but as we look at the entirety of the psalm we can see how the understanding of feelings change from these beginning lines with feelings of abandonment in to a psalm of praise to God for his faithfulness. Jesus reminds us that even in our darkest times, when we may feel God is not with us that He does in fact care and listen to our prayer. It is in verse 25 we are reminded that God has not turned away from us but heard us when we cried out. What a wonderful gift Jesus gave us as he hung on the cross; this reminder that no matter the pain and sufferings we experience in this world, God really is there with us through it all. During this coming week, we will be remembering much of what Jesus did for us. As much as I am an advocate for celebrating Christmas, this week is the Holiest Week of the Church year. We begin today with the reading of the passion at our Palm Sunday Masses. As Holy Week winds down we will have the Institution of the Eucharist at the Mass on Holy Thursday, Good Friday we have the stations of the cross The Liturgy of the Word on Good Friday and then on Saturday, the Easter Vigil which is the greatest of all Church Liturgies. I’d encourage you to try to make this week special by limiting or curtailing some of the activities that can draw us away from the wonders of God. As we approach Holy Week, let’s ask ourselves how we will reflect on this great gift of salvation which Jesus gave us.

April 19: The Agony and the Ecstasy (NR)- Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison portray two of the Renaissance's most colorful figures in this historical drama from the early 16th century. When Pope Julius ll (Harrison) commissions Michelangelo (Heston) to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the artist initially refuses. Virtually forced to do the job by Julius, he later destroys his own work and flees to Rome. Eventually resumed, the project becomes a battle of wills fueled by artistic and temperamental differences that form the core of this movie. Nominated for an Oscar in Cinematography.

Prayer Service for Healing for Victims/Survivors of Sexual Abuse In 2005, the Diocese of Arlington began a series of Prayer Ser-vices for victim/survivors of sexual abuse celebrated by Vicar General Rev. Mark S. Mealey, O.S.F.S. The Prayer Services includes a survivor’s testimony of his or her efforts to heal from the effects of sexual abuse, followed by a light reception. The next Prayer Service will be April 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, 8601 Wolftrap Road in Vienna. Please join us as we pray for healing for our victims/survivors in the Diocese of Arlington and around the world.
