Stewardship thru 8-27-17 $ 127,009
“ Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the
renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will
of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Romans 12:2
The bishops in their pastoral letter on stewardship warn us about
conforming to the destructive “isms” at work in our culture -
materialism, individualism, and consumerism. Stewardship calls
us to generously share what we have with others. Stewardship
focuses on our dependence on God. This focus goes against our
culture’s focus on independence and individualism.
Have you remembered St. Joseph Church in your will?

Jer 20:7-9; Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9; Rom 12:1-2; Mt 16:21-27
O God, you are my God whom I seek.
Psalm 63:2
What is intimacy with God?
How do we know if we have it?
Intimacy with God means we have a deep personal
relationship with God. Today’s readings offer some signs of
such intimacy. In Jeremiah’s prayer, he is honest with God.
“You duped me” (Jeremiah 20:7), he says. Then he
describes the sufferings he has endured for being God’s
prophet. Jeremiah tries to convince himself to resign as a
prophet and never speak of God again. But he can’t. When
he tries, his heart bcomes like a burning fire. Two signs of
intimacy with God are honesty and passion.
The psalmist gives us another sign of intimacy with God.
He says to God, “For you my flesh pines and my soul
thirsts” (verse 2). Intimacy involves pining for someone
beyond ourselves. And it involves our whole person. Paul
says intimacy with God means offering our bodies as a
living sacrifice to God. And Jesus adds a few more signs of
intimacy with God: thinking as God thinks, taking up our
cross and following Jesus.

St. Joseph Church ~ Bardstown KY September 3, 2017
Dear Saint Joseph Parish, I have now completed a ten week summer internship. It has gone by fast! I shared in a lot of great experiences: preaching at daily Mass and on the weekends, traveling to a service camp and retreat in Saint Louis with W.O.W., assisting at wakes and funerals, baptizing children, and speaking about vo-cations in Saint Joseph School. The time has come for me to remember, give thanks, and to look for-ward to the next step.
I remember several funerals during my first weeks at Saint Joseph. Father Terry told me that folks at Saint Joseph do a great job caring for a family as they grieve. I have to agree! The choir pre-pares a beautiful service that is comforting and touching. One of three bereavement teams offer hospi-tality, kindness, and a meal. I give thanks for the wonderful ministry of each volunteer. You have in-spired me! There are many, many other ministries here and I cannot name them all, but you, too, have inspired me.
I began a new phase of ministry Saturday, August 19. I was with UofL Catholic Campus Minis-try’s student leadership team. We were on retreat together, planning activities for the upcoming semes-ter. During my final year of seminary I will be traveling to UofL every Wednesday and one weekend a month. Seminary classes resumed for me on Wednesday August 23rd.
For seminarians and priests, life includes a lot of goodbyes. Several people from Saint Joseph have commented on how many associate pastors have come and gone in recent years and how they miss them. I can say for myself that I am sad to leave Saint Joseph. I now have many connections here. This is like Jesus’ own life because Jesus said many goodbyes. I imagine he experienced sadness too. He was actively proclaiming the Gospel only three short years and during that time he was moving in and out of people’s lives. The apostles saw him day after day, but most people only caught glimpses and had quick exchanges.
In Matthew 15, Jesus travels to Tyre and Sidon, meets a woman, heals her daughter, and returns to Galilee. Why all this movement? Why all this saying goodbye? One perspective to consider is that the fewer goodbyes we make, the fewer hellos we make. Leaving one place allows us to meet new peo-ple. And the relationships we form, no matter how brief, can be deeply meaningful and eternally fruit-ful. Jesus tells us to store up treasure in heaven and I know that the many interactions I’ve had with you will find their fulfillment in eternal life, where there will be no goodbye.
I do not know where I will be in one year. I have only the people in front of me and today’s mis-sion. Pray for me to be attentive and faithful. And do not let the fear of saying goodbye keep you from loving the people in your life. I am reminded of a saying: “Do you know how children spell love? T. I. M. E.” Give time to the ones you love while it is still today.
Finally, Thank You! Thank you Father Terry and Father Joe, all the staff, and each parishioner. Your lives and faith are a conduit of God’s grace. I will carry you with me as we all journey toward our common home. “One day within your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere” – psalm 84
Peace in Christ, Deacon David Farrell

occur during the fiscal year. That is why we ask every parish family to
