TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The Holy Father usually marks the solemn opening of the Lenten fast with a procession and Mass on Ash Wednesday evening. He walks from the Benedictine monastery, San Anselmo, down the Aventine hill to the

Dominican monastery of Santa Sabina. This very old tradition was revived by Pope John XXIII in the late 1950s. Have you ever wondered who gives the pope his ashes? It’s the cardinal who has been given the

“title” of the church of Santa Sabina. The pope’s homily at this Mass states his theme for Lent. Santa Sabina dates from the fifth century, and is one of the most beautiful churches in Rome. One of the panels on its main doors features the Crucifixion, a scene not normally depicted in art until much later. In the year 1219 the pope gave the church to Saint Dominic for his new religious order, the “Order of Preachers,”

commonly called the Dominicans, and it remains their world headquarters to this day. That pope, Honorius III, was a member of the Savelli family, and this church was their personal family chapel. Sabina was a wealthy Roman lady who became a Christian and was martyred, and whose home became a place of prayer. Later,

First Reading: God’s covenant with Noah when he was delivered from the flood (Genesis 9:8-15). Psalm: Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant (Psalm 25). Second Reading: The water of the flood prefigured baptism, which saves you now (1 Peter 3:18-22). Gospel: This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:12-15).

PEOPLE OF THE COVENANT If there is one word that stands out in today’s readings, it is “covenant.” God’s faithfulness and goodness serve as examples to us of how to live. Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God’s covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to

all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and nature, is the rainbow in the heavens. The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our

goodness, but because of God’s goodness and fidelity to the promise. God shows us how to be good, not by decree, but by example.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La Cuaresma tiene sus raíces en la preparación para el Bautismo de adultos y en el arrepentimiento de

pecadores públicos. Ambas se concentran en la conversión y en especial en los tres pilares de la misma. La Cuaresma nos da la oportunidad de encontrarnos de manera fuerte y vital con estos tres pilares: ayunar,

ayudar y orar. Éstas son las prácticas cuaresmales que la Iglesia ha ido proclamando y practicando desde tiempos antiguos. Son prácticas que los cristianos deberíamos emplear todos los días de nuestra vida, pero

con mayor fervor durante la Cuaresma para poder celebrar dignamente las fiestas de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

La conversión es un proceso por el cual regresamos a participar de la vida divina que recibimos en el Bautismo. Dios Padre mandó a su Hijo para salvarnos. He allí el por qué, el ayuno, el altruismo y la oración es colaborar con Dios. Dios mismo colabora con nosotros derramando su Espíritu en nuestros corazones.

PERSONAS DE LA ALIANZA La palabra que sobresale en las lecturas de hoy es la palabra “alianza”. La fidelidad y la bondad de Dios

nos sirven como ejemplo de cómo debemos vivir. En Génesis aparece el relato de Noé y de la alianza de Dios no sólo con las personas sino con la naturaleza. Las aguas purificadoras del diluvio nunca más descargarán su poder destructivo en toda la tierra otra vez. La señal, el recordatorio para Dios y la

naturaleza, es el arco iris en el cielo. El salmo nos recuerda esta compasión de Dios y le implora a Dios que se acuerde de nosotros, no por

nuestra bondad, sino por la bondad de Dios y su fidelidad a la promesa. Dios nos muestra cómo ser buenos, no por decreto, sino dándonos el ejemplo.

Reminders and Suggestions The Church gives pride of place to the Lenten weekday

Masses over Masses in memory of saints, votive Masses, or Masses for special needs and occasions. Only the bishop

may permit votive Masses or Masses for special needs. This means the First Friday votive Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is not celebrated during Lent, nor are the Saturday

memorial Masses in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Catechesis and Communication: The Ceremonial of Bishops reminds us of the practice of not using flowers throughout Lent except on solemnities and on the Fourth Sunday. Parishes that use potted plants during

the year may find Lent a fitting time to remove them All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

In the Gospel, Jesus repeatedly contrasts his disciples with hypocrites. The word that is used in the original Greek, hypokrites, was a theatrical term meaning “actor.” The

hypocrite in Jesus’ eyes is not just someone who practices these moral disciplines in public, but someone who does them

only for show. They are only acting the part; they have not turned their hearts to God. We know ourselves that if our

hearts are in the right place, we fast, pray, and give generously because we want to, not because it makes us look good.

This is the test of our sincerity.

Recordatorios y Sugerencias La Iglesia le da el lugar de preferencia a las Misas diarias de Cuaresma, por encima de las Misas de memoria de los san-

tos, las Misas votivas o las Misas por necesidades y oca-siones especiales. Sólo el obispo puede dar permiso para las Misas votivas o Misas por necesidades especiales. Esto sig-nifica que las Misas votivas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús

en los primeros viernes no se celebran durante la Cuaresma, ni tampoco las Misas de memoria en honor de la Santísima

Virgen María los sábados.

Catequesis y Comunicación: El Ceremonial de los Obispos nos recuerda la práctica de no usar flores durante la Cuaresma excepto en las solem-

nidades y en el Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma. Es re-comendable que las parroquias que tienen plantas en

macetas durante el año las quiten durante el tiempo de Cuaresma.

Todos los viernes de Cuaresma son días de Abstinencia.

En el Evangelio, Jesús hace repetidamente un contraste entre los discípulos y los hipócritas. La palabra

que se usa en el griego original es hypokrites, la cual es un término teatral cuyo

significado es “actor”. Para Jesús, la persona hipócrita es aquella que no sólo practica estas

disciplinas morales en público, sino que lo hace solamente como espectáculo, o sea, para hacerse notar.

Sólo están actuando su papel, pero no han vuelto su corazón a Dios. Sabemos bien que lo

correcto es ayunar, rezar y dar generosamente, porque así lo deseamos, y no porque nos haga lucir bien. Ésa es

la prueba de nuestra sinceridad.
