Confessions will be heard from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM on Saturdays. You may also make an appointment. The temporary confessional is located outdoors at the patio adjacent to the parish office. The confessional in the church is too confined which better allows for the spread of the Coronavirus through aerosolized breath vapor. When you come for confession, please wait in your car, do not form a line, wait until the priest gestures to you to come into the confessional, wear a mask and practice social distancing. Thank you.

Catholic Worker House Meals

Help feed the hungry! Every second Monday of the month, the St. Joseph Social Justice Committee & friends collaborate to provide a meal for 25 children and adults staying at the St. John of the Cross Catholic Worker House in Cedar Rapids. Sign up to provide part of a meal, then drop off your ready-to-eat contribution at St. Joseph Catholic Church (main front doors) between 4:00 - 4:30 PM on that second Monday. Please practice social distancing while dropping off your donation! Our volunteer transporter will leave St. Joe's at 4:30 PM to ensure that all the dinner components will arrive by 5:00 PM.

Xavier Booster Club Golf Outing: Golf Safely; Support XHS Activities!

Farewell Deacon Martin Coolidge—The summer has flown by and now it is time for Deacon Martin to leave to return to the seminary in the fall. He has had a unique internship due to the pandemic and has done very well. He will be a wonderful priest.

We offer our thanks to Deacon Martin for his presence, ministry and service with us. He has given us even more than what we have given to him. Personally, it has been a joy for me to become better acquainted with Deacon Martin, to live, pray and offer ministry with him.

Deacon Martin, our prayers go with you as you depart and complete your seminary formation. Please do be a frequent visitor here. You are always welcome!

Mass Outdoors—will be celebrated on Sunday, August 9, 2020, at 8:00 AM. Here are some highlights: Folks may attend Mass while in their car. Space will be provided for those who bring their own lawn chairs. We have an FM band to which you may tune your radio or other electronic device. Tune to 87.9 FM. People may wish to attend this Mass because of their concerns with the confined space of the church or are compromised

due to a preexisting condition but feel comfortable attending Mass in the car. We will follow current CDC guidelines. ᴏ Those who are showing symptoms of the virus or who have been knowingly exposed to it should remain at home. ᴏ Family members attending Mass in the same vehicle need not wear a mask. It is recommended that those from different households and in the same vehicle wear masks. ᴏ Those seated outdoors should observe the appropriate six feet distancing from one another. Masks can also be helpful in this instance. Holy Communion will be brought to attendees. For safety considerations regarding potential exposure to the virus through

the communion minister or those attending, we ask that you exit your car to receive Holy Communion which will be distributed on the hand. Holy Communion should not be passed to participants in the car. Masks at that time are appropriate in consideration of the health of all people involved.

With thanksgiving to God, I am grateful for my time with you this summer. A week before I was ordained a deacon, I did not even know if I would be here because of the pandemic! So, to serve you these past months has been a true gift from God. Although the shut down and reopening process has been difficult for all, perhaps an experience of the spiritual desert, dark night of faith, exile, and certainly the cross, I want to take a paragraph to highlight the blessings God made me aware of this summer at the parish. Because, if there is one thing I know, it is the power of the Paschal Mystery. Although we may feel ourselves living Christ’s suffering and death more intensely right now, believe and do not forget the Risen and Ascended Jesus! Without ignorance of the hard times past, present, and those that may come, I hope you have not only been noticing what I saw but have been strengthened in faith from these good things of the Lord too:

We reopened immediately, the first weekend the Archbishop allowed! This was the fruit of much labor and preparation by Fr. Dave and the staff. The blessing here is you have a faithful shepherd and dedicated parish leaders. There were over 20 people brought into the Church or fully initiated through RCIA this summer! Because of the pandemic there was no public Easter Vigil Mass for these folks, so they patiently waited. The blessing here is how much the Holy Spirit is at work in the parish and the mission of evangelization the parish is fulfilling. There were infant baptisms nearly every weekend! I had the privilege of presiding at 7 of them. The blessing here is the gift of new life in Christ at our parish. Monday all day adoration has returned and is going strong thanks to many volunteers. The blessing here is the gift of prayer – seeking union with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and interceding for others. Giving to the needy of our community has continued through donations to the Marion Food Bank and many new service projects to come through YFF. The blessing here is the heart of charity you possess and desire to deepen. Lastly, St. Joseph’s has a good culture of vocations to the priesthood. Continue to pray for more men to enter seminary from the parish and pray for your two current seminarians – Peter Binder and James Duggan.

I am thankful to God for calling me to be a priest! It has been the greatest joy of my life to be formed closer to Christ. Thank you for helping me learn and grow in my vocation and for your many prayers and encouragement. Please do keep me in prayer as I return to Mundelein Seminary for my final year of formation.
