Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 28, 2018

    Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you!” [Mark 10: 49c] God’s goodness in our lives far exceeds anything that we can ask for or imagine. You and I have only splashed around in the shallow end of the pool of God’s mercy. To dive deep into the fullness of his love that is indeed available to us, we must learn how to open our hearts, how to begin again to pray.

Like Bartimaeus, we are tempted to stay where we are by the side of the road thinking that “nothing will ever change.” But because the Holy Spirit NEV-ER gives up on us, Bart begins to CRY OUT: “Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me!” Even though peo-ple tell him to “Shut up!” and tell him that he is being politically incorrect and socially embarrassing, he won’t give up. Finally, Jesus answers and calls him. Bart lets go of everything and stumbles forward to encounter Jesus, who asks him what he really wants. Bart tells him “I want to see!” “On your way,” says Jesus. “Your faith has saved and healed you!”

How do we respond? Admit we need a new vi-sion. Pray more faithfully. Ask for advice from some-one you trust. Read the scriptures with a hungry heart. Make retreat or reflection time a normal part of your life.

Questions for the week: How have I experienced spiritual blindness in my prayer life? When do I feel most loved by Jesus? How is it conveyed to me?

    Your Pastor, Fr. Bob

Work, Pray, Play Days! were a hit! 50-60 people showed up last Saturday to share some holy sweat in cleaning the church inside out and shaping up the grounds. Most stayed for a sandwich lunch and some even went right back at it until 2 PM Saturday af-ternoon. On Sunday we prayed in Angel Baza’s big white tent, contemplated Oscar Romero’s life and mar-tyrdom, dined on burgers and dogs from the Knights of Columbus, and played like squirrels for several hours in the perfectly cool fall weather. Many thanks to Maria Contreras who anchored the kitchen work, to Loretta’s teens who had lots of fun things to do, and to all who came out to work, pray, and play!

  • Word from Pope Francis

“The treasures we have given to others, that we take with us… And that is what the Lord lets us bring. Love, charity, service, patience, goodness, tenderness are very beautiful treasures: these we bring with us. The other things, no.”

The Cloud of Witnesses: Every year at the end of October we place on the bulletin board our All Souls Day List for 2017-2018, and invite our parish members to share their losses with us.

As a Community of Faith we solemnly remember our sisters and brothers who have come to the end of their pilgrimage in this life and have gone before us into Eternal Life. We honor and cherish them, interceding for them during the month of November until the feast of Christ the King. Please add to this list on the bulletin board the names of relatives and friends who have died since

Nov 2, 2017 last year. These names will be read solemnly with the prayers on next weekend, November 3-4.

The Cloud of Witnesses tableau in front of the altar welcomes pic-tures and prints of our deceased loved ones that may be taped to the cardboard poster. This gives us a visual image of those we are praying for.
