Happy Thanksgiving!—Mass will be at 9:00 AM. Although we didn’t have much of a fall this year, autumn calls our attention to the harvest, the fruits the earth produced during the growing season. Some harvests are better than others, yet the bounty of God is still evident. We can easily, however, emphasize what is wrong or an exception to the harvest or God’s bounty. Some people, too, seem to be left behind or maybe even forgotten by God. However, even in deprivation and turmoil, real blessings are realized. People who have experienced
great tragedy and loss have offered this reminder. I recently read, for example, an excerpt about Thanksgiving written by Jennifer Hubbard, a mother whose daughter was one of the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. She reflected upon what St. Paul wrote that, “. . . all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Rm 8: 28). Goodness is produced in all things, she said, and that without darkness, there can be no growth, and that jagged rocks are transformed into polished stones. All things work for good by the power of God. There is, then, always fruit in our lives and a reason to give thanks. The Solemnity of Christ the King—is celebrated this weekend. The reality of Jesus Christ being king may initially be a remote intellectual concept or an unfamiliar form of governance. To be king means one has dominion—power and authority—and reigns, rules, over his subjects with it. For Americans who rejected a king which resulted in the founding of our country, we may initially meet this solemnity with our sense of independence rather than desiring the dominion of a king. Look again. The passage from St. Luke’s gospel (Lk 23: 35-43) proclaimed today shows that Jesus reigns not from a throne, but the cross. His power is self-abasement, humiliation and the ignominy of an innocent man condemned to death. He is the lamb of sacrifice rather than the subject of adulation. The Son of God surrendered himself to being sacrificed on the cross and died in obedience to the Father. He was not served, but is the suffering servant. His reign is one of overwhelming love that tempers God’s justice for our sinfulness with infinite mercy. His power is exercised over sin and death and his authority is asserted over evil and Satan himself. He reigns with mercy and forgiveness while calling all people unto himself, without compromise to their freedom. Behold, this is Christ our King! Advent—begins next weekend (November 30-December 1). The advent confession schedule is published below. Please note carefully the confession times and take full advantage of the communal penances being held in the metro area. Individual confessions are heard at these celebrations and a large number of priests will be present. COMMUNAL PENANCES Saturday, December 14, All Saints, Cedar Rapids, 10:30 AM Thursday, December 19, St. Elizabeth, Hiawatha, 7:00 PM Saturday, December 21, Immaculate Conception, Cedar Rapids, 10:30 AM CONFESSIONS AT ST. JOSEPH Saturday, November 30, 3:00-4:00 PM Saturday, December 7, 3:15-4:00 PM Saturday, December 14, 3:00-4:00 PM Saturday, December 21, 3:00-4:00 PM Sunday, December 22, 5:00-6:00 PM St. Joseph Christmas 2019 Mass Schedule--The Mass times will not change this year, but we will have one less Mass. Since we are now a one priest parish, the 4:00 PM Christmas Eve Mass in the school gym will not occur. Rather, all Masses will be celebrated in the church and we will welcome the overflow for any Mass in the church basement where a large TV screen and sound system will be set-up. The Christmas Mass schedule is: 4:00 PM Christmas Eve—This Mass time is the most popular and hence is very crowded 6:30 PM Christmas Eve—This Mass has competed with the 9:00 AM Christmas Day Mass as the second most crowded which
means about two-thirds of the church being filled. 9:00 PM Christmas Eve—This is the least crowded of all the Masses and is usually half full. 9:00 AM Christmas Day—This Mass can be on par with the 6:30 PM Christmas Eve attendance or larger.
