"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Mt. 5:1-12
The Beatitudes, which Jesus proclaimed in word and deed, contain his core values which lead us to a life filled with eternal happiness both on earth and in heaven, indeed
an alternative translation for “Blessed” is “Mountains of Happiness”. The “Sermon on the Mount” and the Beati-
tudes are revolutionary, turning the world up-side-down. Jesus teaches the truth of human life, that it is not the rich
and powerful, those who see the world in terms of “Winners and losers” but those who can accept the reality that all
are powerless and that we need to depend on the lord, who alone is our strength. Alone it is impossible to live the Law of God, it is impossible to love as Jesus loves us, however, when we are in communion with the Lord, we walk with
him on a journey of faith, growing in his love and life. The term “Poor in spirit” does not mean poverty, but the act of faith through which we are in communion with the Lord
who is our strength.
“I can do it myself, I do not need any help” and “If I can do it you can do it too” reflect the attitude of the “Rich” with its illusion of power, which is the OPPOSITE attitude of the “Poor in spirit”. Everyone before Jesus believed that through their good acts they merited God’s blessings, a
burden that was impossible to carry. When we embrace our own powerlessness, we embrace the spirit of the poor, and depend on the strength of the Lord, through whom we can do what is impossible alone, and in that journey of faith in
communion with the Lord, we encounter “Mountains of happiness” now and forever in the “Kingdom of Heaven”
Centennial ProjectRedahan Hall Kitchen
We need to form a committee of persons who work as chefs and others from our parish groups to evaluate what needs
to be done to improve the Redahan Hall Kitchen. Please call the Parish office to leave your information. While this phase of the Centennial Project is two ears away we need to make
the plans now.
Roofs
We detected no water leaks in the roofs during the recent rains, it seems that the previous repairs were timely.
Parish Trees TrimmedWe are most grateful to our Parishioners who donated their time and talents in trimming the trees around the Church,
Redahan Hall and in front of the Rectory. Thank you!

hablará a tu corazón!
Exposition of the Blessed SacramentConsider making an appointment with the Lord. We have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Monday through Fri-day after the 8:00 Am Mass until 9:00 PM and on all Satur-days (not on the first Saturday until we have sponsors) from after the 7:00 PM Mass until 5:00 AM. The Lord is present in the tabernacle, but during the Exposition He is placed in the Monstrance for solemn Adoration. Those who make the time for a visit with the Lord have found deep peace and consolation as well as greater joy of life. Spend some time in silence with the Lord and He will speak to your heart!
Flu Season PrecautionsAs in years past, we are making preventative measures during the flu season. We will have sanitizer at all of the doors for all to use as you enter the church and we will not be offering the chalice.
About our Liturgy... Acerca de Nuestra LiturgiaFinal blessing and dismissal: From a very early time the shape of the Mass included two divisions, word and sac-rament. Communion was originally the final act of Mass, but early on there was a felt need to formalize the dismissal of the people. The simplest way to do this was in a kind of second post-Communion prayer called the “prayer over the people” (which is now a choice that is given with some Mass formularies). Paralleling the blessings of those who were dismissed earlier in Mass (and still present in the prayers accompanying the dismissal of the catechumens in parishes implementing the RCIA), there eventually developed a sim-ple blessing over the people. The import of this concluding blessing is to call down God’s help and protection on the people as they leave to take up their daily tasks. We might interpret this concluding blessing as a kind of shorthand for the Beatitudes. Thus, at every liturgy we are sent forth armed with God’s Presence, knowing that what-ever difficulties (persecutions) we might encounter in living the Gospel, we are not alone but always accompanied by God. Brief though it is, this final blessing atMass sums up a message that Scripture often reminds us: our God wishes us all good things.

Living the Paschal MysteryThe Beatitudes seem to describe behaviors and attitudes that we generally ascribe to those we call “saints.” Yet, all of us can name good people we know—truly good people. We can name the qualities and actions that lead us to judge them truly good. These (and we ourselves) are truly good—the blessed. It is awesome to think that our own halting efforts at being really good—at extending mercy, justice, and righteousness to others as God has extended them to us—are one means for bringing God’s blessedness to others! Simply sharing in God’s work of salvation—providing for those in need—is a blessingin itself that brings unequaled happiness. Our deepest hap-piness comes notfrom fulfilling our own needs and wants, but from reaching out to others as God reaches out to us in blessing. Happiness that comes from our own desires and efforts is fleet-ing; the blessings of God that are showered upon us as we live humbly, justly, and faithfully last forever. Here’s the truly amazing part: the happiness we share now is but a taste of our great reward in heaven!
Connecting the Gospelto the first reading: The blessings Jesus announces contin-ue an ancient tradition reflected in the first reading: God extends protection and refuge to those who “seek justice” and are “humble and lowly.”
to experience: When people hear the word “blessed,” they tend to think of holiness and discount themselves. The Be-atitudes remind us that blessedness is bestowed by God on those who faithfully follow Jesus.

Safeguard the ChildrenDid you know? Pay attention to and address risky behavior. It is possible for children to abuse other children, and that when it happens, the effects can be devastating for the child who has been abused. As caregivers, make sure to notice any young people who are exhibiting behaviors that are troublesome or inappropriate. Be there to step in when high-risk behavior is present. Support the youth, and give him/her the opportunity to get professional help, to go to counseling with a therapist that is trained in this issue, and to talk with you about the challenges they are facing so that together you can find solutions. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Turning Our Attention to Teen and Youth Offenders,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
Protegiendo a los Niños de Dios
¿Sabia usted?
