I am delighted that you are taking the time to explore the diverse educational community
that is St. Johnsbury Academy. As you thumb through the pages of our publications, wander
around our campus, and come to know members of our faculty, staff, and student body,
I hope you will get a sense of the exciting array of opportunities that await you here. This is a
place where you are encouraged to dream big—a place in which you are offered many chances to
develop your own unique brand of greatness.
We are committed to helping you discover and pursue your particular intellectual and
extracurricular interests, and in the process, discover who you are and what particular kind of
excellence you possess. At the same time, our traditions of civility and active citizenship will
challenge you to become more compassionate, honest, responsible, and respectful.
Our teachers and programs are among the very best in the world, and they will challenge you
to reach your full potential, helping you achieve more than perhaps you thought possible. Our
diverse community—with students from Vermont, New Hampshire, and dozens of other states
and countries—speaking dozens of languages and each with a unique culture and world view—
will inspire you to rethink your own perspectives on the world and international relations.
As a boarding student, you will live in a small community, surrounded by some of the finest
young people in the world. Living in small, close-knit residences, ranging from Victorian
mansions to brand new dorms, you will make friends easily and develop lifelong friendships with
other young people from all over the world. You will also develop close relationships with the
handful of adults who live with you and help guide you through your Academy years.
From its inception in 1842, the Academy has been a place where young people like you have
developed the skills, knowledge, and character necessary for them to make their world a better
place. All of us here at the Academy confidently promise you that we will help you become the
best person, the best learner, and the best citizen you can be. And as a long-time Academy faculty
member, coach, and parent, I can promise you that you can have a lot of fun along the way.
Very sincerely yours,
Thomas W. Lovett, Headmaster

We are committed to helping you discover and pursue your particular intellectual and extracurricular interests, and in the process, discover who you are and what kind of excellence you possess.
The Academy treasures the spirit of young people—their energy, their creativity, their compassion and generosity—and the unique spirit of each student, believing in them even when they don’t believe in themselves.
The Academy is committed to providing every reasonable opportunity for every student to succeed, proactively and empathetically encouraging each one to be resilient, and providing the supports and resources needed to make success a reality.

By creating a comprehensive and independent school, offering technical training as well as college preparatory studies, the founders forged a community unique among New England academies.
A long-standing education voucher system, providing area students with educational choice, continues to allow the Academy to enroll the majority of students from the regional area while maintaining its independence and offering world-class boarding programs.
history & traditionThe AcAdemy wAs founded in 1842 by Erastus, Thaddeus, and Joseph Fairbanks of Fairbanks
Scales (a major manufacturer in early America), to provide
intellectual, moral, and religious training for their own children
and those of the community. When the school was founded,
the Fairbanks family set the tuition at a level that allowed any
qualified student to attend, thus creating a school in which every
child, regardless of family circumstance, had equal access to
excellence—in education, citizenship, and opportunity. This
enabled the children of farmers and factory workers to receive a
world-class education alongside their own children.
They dreamed of a school, independent in mission and governance, led by a world-class faculty, providing excellent facilities and a program that prepared hearts and minds for the challenges of democratic citizenry. For nearly 170 years, the Academy has embraced this dream, made possible by the vision and generosity of those who love it.

The commitment to independent community-based education remains at the very heart of the Academy’s educational philosophy and mission.
We have one of the most-diverse student bodies in today’s independent school world.
OurVisionThe AcAdemy is commiTTed To A sTudenT-cenTeRed APPRoAch To TeAchinG And LeARninG. The Academy
embraces the responsibility to determine how each
student learns best—and we adapt our delivery of
instruction to maximize each student’s performance. The
daily schedule is structured to provide all students with
additional learning support or enrichment. Additionally,
boarding students have evening study periods and access
to academic assistance.

Mission & PhilosophyCharacter To teach good character by modeling and fostering compassion, respect, responsibility, and integrity.
Inquiry To foster a love for learning by challenging individuals to pursue knowledge, creativity, and intellectual self-reliance.
Community To encourage each individual to understand his or her relationships, rights, and responsibilities within a community that is itself part of the larger world.
HigH asPirations for all Success at the Academy comes from the desire to be great: the Academy
cultivates a culture of high aspirations. Setting and maintaining high standards
for performance and decorum, expecting the best from each person, and
believing that no one should ever be or feel mediocre—the Academy community
challenges its members to succeed beyond their previous expectations.
oPtiMisM regarding tHe Potential of eacH stUdent St. Johnsbury Academy believes that young people have the potential
to do great things, that they have gifts and talents—some of which have
gone unrecognized or unused. We believe that by helping each student
recognize and use these gifts, teachers can empower all students to
achieve their own brands of excellence, transforming their own lives
while changing the world around them.

As a boarding student, I’ve learned that part of what makes St. Johnsbury Academy special is its diversity, and it’s something I never dreamed of back in China.
The Academy has an especially supportive environment. It’s here that I developed many of my interests and had fun studying and playing. There’s always something to learn and to discover.

morning assembly begins each day at Chapel

together. Freshmen meet in the more intimate setting of
South Church, while the Upperclassmen gather in Fuller
Hall. Chapel is a foundational tradition at the Academy
and one that allows you, your fellow students, and the
faculty to set a positive tone for the day. The experiences
we share in Chapel become lessons in empathy and
compassion. “Chapel Talks” by students, faculty, and staff
invite you to see a chapter in their lives and to learn from
the challenging experiences they have faced. Whether you
are applauding success, celebrating birthdays, or sharing
viewpoints, Chapel will remind you that you are part of a

Learning servicesThe Academy offers a variety of programs to assist those students
who require help with organization and study skills; or whose
diagnosed learning disability creates the need for specialized
assistance, remediation, and classroom accommodations.
Increasing a student’s academic, social/emotional, and self-advocacy
skills are primary goals within these programs. The Special Services
Department is staffed with highly professional special educators
and learning specialists. Services are provided through Study Skills,
Guided Studies, and Individualized Services programs.
The following courses offered in the Special Services Department
receive credit upon successful completion.
study skills is a one-credit course available to both Freshmen
and Upperclassmen. These courses teach learning strategies, time
management, goal setting, and provides time for course work and
assistance from staff.
the Guided studies program provides support services to
students requiring additional attention and support. In addition
to learning strategies and time-management skills, this program
provides individual support including remediation, and the
development and monitoring of classroom accommodations.
Students enroll in the Guided Studies program for one block per day.
the individualized services program is designed for
students who require intensive daily support, and focuses on small
group and/or individual instruction addressing basis skills in all
subject-area content, with real-life applications.
Learning centerThe Center for Academic Improvement was created to provide
students with one-on-one academic support from senior faculty. The
Center is available to students daily during their free block.
Advisor/AdviseeYour advisor will maintain close contact with you, your parents,
and each of your teachers. To promote the kind of cooperation and
understanding necessary to do this well requires time together. We
provide this time during Chapel, weekly advisory meetings, and
other meetings during the school year. Additional personal meetings
are scheduled as often as necessary.
Advisor meetings are designed for two purposes: to provide time to
address most of the common issues that arise during your secondary
school career in an informal and small group (approximately 10
students per advisor) setting; and to build a sense of community and
trust among the advisor group. Our advisor groups often get together
for social activities and community-service projects.
What’s truly special about St. Johnsbury Academy’s special services program is that it seamlessly incorporates world-class special services into the Academy’s renowned comprehensive curriculum. special services finds ways to help you, and the classroom teachers are open to making accommodations.

and long range academic planning, our Guidance Counselors
assume an active role in the scheduling process by offering assistance
to students, advisors, and parents. There is a direct relationship between
a student’s course sequence throughout high school and available post-

especially critical.
in addition to the advisor, each student is assigned a
college counselor who works with the student and family to research
appropriate college and other post-secondary educational opportunities.
The Guidance Office maintains an extensive library of reference books
