St. John’s Messenger Volume 94, Issue 1 January 8, 2014 Excerpt taken from God’s Pause: Psalm 29 This psalm transports me, a land-locked Iowan, to the shore of an ocean or perhaps to one of the Great Lakes. A gale-force wind blows; waves pound the sand or break on the giant boulders. In the wild cacophony of nature I hear the "voice of the Lord." The Psalm proclaims God as Creator of the cosmos, able to shake the wilderness and cause the oak trees to whirl. Why is this psalm appointed for the celebration of The Baptism of Our Lord? Perhaps because there are other waters over which God speaks, the waters of the font to which we bring people of all ages. Baptismal fonts come in all shapes and sizes, of course, from large tanks used for immersion to a small bowl on a table. But these are waters over which the voice of the Lord also thunders: You are my beloved child. Clothed in the Trinity, you are held in my love forever. The waters of baptism are mighty waters, made mighty, Luther reminds us, by God's Word and God's command. In and over them God's claim on us forever is proclaimed with thundering love. Thank you, Mighty God, for declaring us your beloved children. May this gift of love free us to serve you with joy today and always. Amen. Excerpt taken from God’s Pause:

Psalm 29

This psalm transports me, a land-locked Iowan, to the shore of an ocean or perhaps to one of the Great Lakes.

Amen.

Psalm 29 (NRSV)

1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor.3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters.4 The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.9 The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, "Glory!"

Epiphany's significanceThe church season of Epiphany begins on January 6 each year. The name comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, meaning “to appear, to show or to manifest.” The ending date of the Epiphany season is determined by Ash Wednesday, which is determined by the date of Easter.

Traditionally, Epiphany Day marks the arrival of the Magi, or wise men, to worship the infant Jesus. The significance of Epiphany for Christians is that it symbolizes the first recognition of Christ by Gentiles, or non-Jews.

The season of Epiphany emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus, the light of the world. Symbols for the season include light, a star and the color green, which represents life, growth, hope and eternity.

Fill a jarNeed a new tradition to beginthe new year? One way toreflect on your blessings as thedays and months pass is to filla Blessing Jar. Simply find acontainer (ideally with a lid) and place it in a prominent place in your home. Next to it, set slips of paper and writing utensils.

Encourage every family member to jot down one thing they’re grateful for every day. If you have a large family, you may need one jar for each person. You can also use different-colored paper slips for each family member.

Every week, sit down together and review the many ways that God is present in your lives.

WE NEED YOU ! ! !

More than 95% of our ministries, programs and projects here at St. John’s are done by volunteers. Each of us has a talent or gift given to us by God in which we can share. All of us have time, whether it is an hour or two or more.

At the end of this issue is a Time and Talent Sheet. Please look over this survey, there are a lot of different opportunities in which to help. Please fill out a form for each member of your house and return it to the office by January 26th. Even if you already volunteer, please fill out a form - this allows us to update our lists and is a great way for us to keep up with current contact information for you. Additional forms will be available in the rear of the sanctuary and outside the Church Office.

Sign at a local car dealership – offering New Souls starting at $15979. I’d rather go to the God Dealership – his prices can’t be beat and the warranty lasts forever.

1 Corinthians 4-124 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord;6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
