Dear St. John XXIII Catholic School Community,
This entire week I have been working through last weekend’s Gospel reading more than
usual. In last Sunday’s Gospel, ten lepers approach Jesus asking for his pity. He sends them
away to the priest and on their way they are all healed. Only one of the ten chooses to return to
Jesus to thank Him. It doesn’t go unnoticed by Jesus that the pack is a bit “light” when they
return.
The priest that gave the homily at the Mass I attended talked about gratitude and its
importance. He conjectured that the word ‘gratitude’ is often diluted because we hear it so much
that it has lost its depth. He even went as far as to say that our gratitude to God was THE most
important thing we can offer God each day because in summary, in each day, EVERYTHING
was given to us. Daily living encompasses a slew of emotions, activities, and relationships, all of
which are gifts from God. Birth, family, friends, talents, interests, sacraments, and even God’s
very desire to dwell with us; can we ever say thank you enough for those gifts in a lifetime?
We were challenged to create a journal for the next month on gratitude. In the journal it was
suggested that we list 3 things each day we are thankful for equaling 90 items for the
month. The trick is that we can NEVER repeat the same thing twice. He even challenged those
among us that thought this was easy to try it for the year. He asked us all to give it sincere
thought and prayer before we wrote any responses for the day. Having worked through it this
week, I can tell you it has been a wonderful experience that I thought I would share with all of
you because I’m am thankful it was shared with me. Gratitude, when expressed in the context of
God IS prayer. So when I give thanks to the people in my life for the gifts they share with me, I
am also giving thanks to God who makes those relationships possible. Try it out!
Thank you and God Bless,
Preston Colao Principal

What is Lectio Divina??
October Pride Day, your children will learn more about this contemplative way to pray the Gospel and share what they learn with you!
The Latin phrase “lectio divina” may be translated as “divine reading.” Lectio divina is a method for praying with the Scriptures. As one reads and invites the Word to become a transforming
lens that brings the events of daily living into focus, one can come to live more deeply and find the presence of God more readily in the events of each day. The method of lectio divina follows
four steps: lectio (reading), meditatio (meditation), contemplatio (contemplation), and oratio (prayer).

The month of October is annually observed by the Catholic Church in the United States as Respect Life Month. We are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. We are called and sent to be messengers of God’s love, treating one another as cherished and chosen by Him. In doing so, we help build a culture that respects all human life. Let us all keep those who are most vulnerable in our prayers this month and always.
