GOD’S CALL The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today’s readings outline how the disciple is present in the world. The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread, shelter the oppressed. clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive to the urgent needs of others. Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds. We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent, however, that we have heard the word of God and been awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word and bring that presence to others.

Mass Book 2021

The Mass Book for your intentions for the year 2021 will be opened on March 20 and 21, 2020. More information will follow about the time and the procedure for arranging Masses. Our 2020 Mass Book is still available at the rectory for current year intentions.

World Marriage Day

Marriage is a precious sign, for “when a man and a woman celebrate the sacrament of marriage, God is, as it were, ‘mirrored’ in them; he impresses in them his own features and the indel-ible character of his love. Marriage is the icon of God’s love for us. Indeed, God is also communion: the three Per-sons of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit live eter-nally in perfect unity. And this is precisely the mystery of marriage: God makes of the two spouses one single exist-ence”. This has concrete daily consequences, because the spouses, “in virtue of the sacrament, are invested with a true and proper mission, so that, starting with the simple ordinary things of life they can make visible the love with which Christ loves his Church and continues to give his life for her”. (Amoris Laetitiae, 121)

Page 3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2020

Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

Today the Church observes World Marriage Day. Much as we focused on the Consecrated Life last weekend, so now do we turn our attention to the sacred place of Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church. We believe that the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony not only binds the couple together spiritually on the day of their wedding but also stays with them throughout the course of their life to sustain them in their difficulties and elevate them in their joys! Many of our parish couples will give testimony to this today as they reveal their many years of married life in Christ. This should be an inspiration to all married couples, and provides an opportunity to invite those who may be only civilly married to consider coming forward to have their union blessed in the Catholic Church. Of course, we are also still pleased to assist young and not-so-young couples in preparing for marriage in the Church.

The readings today lend themselves to the theme of this year’s Shining the Light of Christ Annual Appeal. There are many ways to let the light of our faith and charity shine forth, not to draw attention to ourselves but to encourage others by sharing the gift of Christ with them. I am pleased to report that as of last Sunday, 44 parish families have begun our parish’s response to this appeal with pledges totaling $16,800.00, already almost 16% of our parish goal of $106,901.00. Once we have met this goal, which supports so many works vital to the life of the Church and its people here in our Archdiocese, our parish will receive the balance of any additional pledges. Please respond by returning the pledge form you received in the mail directly to the Archdiocese. Limited copies are available at the doors of the church.

Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings.

In today’s reading from the Letter to the Corinthians Paul says it is the power of God working through him, not his own wisdom or talents, that allowed the Corinthians to put their faith in the gospel. The Corinthians themselves were so self-satisfied and proud about their gifts that they had forgotten who gave them what they had and what their gifts were for. Paul reminds them, and us, that everything we have—even our faith—is from the Lord and for others. It is the Lord’s light that shines through those who, like Paul, put their trust in God. To walk in that light is to allow God’s generosity, mercy, and justice to shine through us. And that means sharing all we have, as individuals and as a community, the way God has done and continues to do for us.

The Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church is entitled Lumen Gentium, “Light of the Nations,” because that is what the Church is called to be. Christ’s light is given to us—not only for our own personal benefit now or salvation someday—but that others might “see the light” and turn their gaze and their lives toward the dawning Sun of Justice: Christ, our Light.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

MATTHEW 5:16

The generosity of being a good steward of your gifts has a positive effect on people and it is contagious! Good works encourage more good works. Let your light shine! Be careful to recognize that God is working through you and don’t put yourself above the people you have been called to help.

Prayers for the Dead Please remember Johnny Jeyakumar and Deacon John Inguaggiato in your prayers.

Message from Cardinal Tobin You may have read in the secular press over a week ago that our Archbishop Emeritus, Most Rev. John J. Myers, has returned to Peoria where his family lives, and has been admitted to a care facility which will help him deal with physical and personal issues that have developed. Cardinal Tobin has advised that the controversial residence in Clinton, New Jersey, will be sold, and the money returned to the Archdiocese. Parishioners who may have been withholding donations to the Archdiocese through the Annual Appeal or in some cases the Sunday collection are kindly asked to positively reconsider their support for the good of the Church.
