Dear Parish Family, Today’s Gospel recounts one of the most dramatic stories from the life of Jesus: the raising of Lazarus from the dead. John goes to great lengths to make clear that Lazarus

had been dead for some time, and he shows Jesus’ power to conquer death. There is a Jewish belief that the soul hovers over the body for three days before departing permanently. Four days is an indication that Lazarus was beyond the point of recall! We live in a world that has been caught up in death for a long time. We kill each other in acts of murder, abortion, euthanasia, execution, war, terrorist activities, drunk and reckless driving. We kill ourselves through suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, smoking, overwork, stress, bad eating habits, and physical neglect. We watch to the point of being entertained on our news telecasts as others die from poverty, hunger and malnutrition, homelessness, unemployment, poor education, destruction of the envi-ronment, unsafe working conditions, violent extremism and all the laws, policies, practices and attitudes which contribute to these condi-tions. Jesus is the resurrection and the life. He is the God who “will put my spirit in you that you may live.” There is a tension between this life and the next … What is more important, this world or the next? Within what perspective do I make decisions, the span of my years here on earth or the horizon of eternity? How much potential happiness should I sacrifice here in this world in view of eternal life? Is this life a vale of tears or a valley of opportunity? The Christian view is that both are important. When Jesus said that “I have come so that you may have life he is referring both to life after death and life after birth. The account of the raising of Lazarus is another exploration into the fullness of life; in this case it is the fullness found by responding to Jesus as the one ‘Sent’ by the Father. As is usual in the Fourth Gospel, insight comes through conversations in which there are two levels of understanding. Jesus makes statements that are misunderstood by his interlocutors because they hear him in a conventional and superficial way, whereas he means something deeper. Jesus says to his disciples that Lazarus is sleeping and that he is going to awaken him. They take the idiom of sleep and awakening literally, whereas Jesus is really talk-ing about resuscitation of the dead man. We soon discover that the physical resuscitation of a dead man is a sign of something deeper still. Jesus arrives four days after Lazarus's death, and Martha scolds him for not coming earlier to heal her broth-er. When Jesus says, “Your brother will rise,” she takes this as a con-ventional reference to the general resurrection “on the last day.” Jesus responds, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” In this statement, Jesus has moved beyond the tradi-tional Jewish expectation of the general resurrection and applied that language to the new life that a person enters by relating to him with faith. Just as the healing of the man born blind of last week’s reflection, is a sign of something else, the deeper “seeing” that is the life of faith, the raising of Lazarus from physical death is a sign of a deeper awakening to the fullness of life, the “eternal life” that comes with Christian faith. ‘Life is short and eternity is long.’ The secret of the meaningful adventure of the journey of life is the personal relationship with Christ.

Lazarus Is Us The sequence of the Gospel of John is the opposite of the chil-dren's game "Show and Tell." It is "Tell and Show." The Pro-logue tells us that Jesus is the light and life of the world (Jn. 1:4, 5). The giving of sight to the man born blind (Jn. 9) and the rais-ing of Lazarus from the dead (Jn. 11) show us Jesus giving light and life to particular human beings. We are invited to see our-selves in them and him in our lives. We are to see ourselves in Lazarus, whose name, a shortened form of Eleazar, means "God helps." He is from a town whose name, Bethany, means "House of Affliction." So God helps one who suffers from affliction. John takes a friendship between Jesus and this family and an event that has the quality of reminiscence and shapes it to his theological purpose (Brown, 431). Lazarus is the "one Jesus loves"; he represents all those whom Jesus loves, which includes you and me and all humankind. This story, then, is the story of our coming to life from death in this present mo-ment, not just in a future event.

The Fourth Gospel repeatedly uses the physical realm as a met-aphorical pointer to the spiritual realm. Water is a metaphor for the quenching of our spiritual thirst through Jesus' presence; Jesus is the living water (Jn. 4:14). The bread Jesus multiplies to feed the crowd is a metaphor for the satisfaction of our spiritu-al hunger that Jesus brings; Jesus is the Bread from Heaven (Jn. 6:35). Sight is a metaphor for the spiritual vision and clarity that Jesus brings; Jesus is the light of the world (Jn. 8:12, and chapter 9 where Jesus gives sight to a man born blind). Here, in chapter 11, the restoration of physical life is a metaphor for breaking free from the bonds of spiritual death into the gift of eternal life that Jesus brings. Jesus is the resurrection and the life Jesus responds to Lazarus' illness with equanimity. He says that "this illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it" (Jn. 11:4). He is not expressing his hope that, because of the miracle he is about to perform, he will be admired and praised. "God's glory" is a reference to Jesus' own resurrection. His raising of Lazarus from the dead will speed his own death, which will lead to his resurrection, in which we all participate.

When Jesus says, "Take away the stone," the reader can't help but be reminded of Jesus' coming resurrection. Our knowledge of the reality of future life colors our experience of present death.

Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" Jesus' shout brings life to Lazarus and to us. Lazarus is us, bound by death in our current lives, called to life by Jesus who is the Light and the Life of the world. Jesus stands at the edge of our

tomb, shouting "Come out!" We are to substi-tute our own name for that of Lazarus, hear his command, and walk into the light of day, pulling free of our grave clothes as we go.
