There is still great need for volunteer teachers and
helpers for the children’s liturgy during our weekend
Masses. The requirement is for one Mass per month
and can be for the Mass you normally attend. In
addition, substitutes are needed to fill in occasionally.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY
Parish Library Spot At Mass we sing “Here I Am Lord”,
“You Are Near”, and “Table of
Plenty” - some songs by Dan
Schutte. Schutte has also written a
book titled Walking the Sacred
Path. It is a compilation of thirty
spiritual exercises based on the
“Spiritual Exercises” of St. Ignatius. As in his music,
Schutte deals with themes of longing and desire for
God, the hungers of the human heart, unfulfilled
human hopes and dreams, and the profound
happiness of finding one’s home in God. His goal in
both his music and his writing these spiritual
exercises is to draw the reader into a personal, living,
growing relationship with Jesus Christ. CHECK IT

We are still in need of a volunteer for the 4:30 Mass
shift on the fifth Saturdays of the month. This only
happens about four times per year. This position
involves the sale of gift certificates in the Bell Tower
30 minutes prior to Mass and approximately for 30
minutes after Mass has ended. Please leave a message
on the Shopping Cent$ hotline (699-6960 ext. 240) if
you can help fill this position.
ARE YOU AWARE that every holiday, several
parishioners send cards to our parishioners who are
homebound or in a nursing home? Thank you to these
ladies who so graciously give of their time.
ARE YOU AWARE that Martha’s Group is in need
of helpers? On Monday morning and Thursday
afternoon these two groups of volunteers clean our
church and gathering space. If you have a few hours to
spare to help clean, we would be most grateful.

NOVEMBER 15, 2015 COLLECTION REPORT
7th and 8th Grade Poinsettia Sale Wouldn’t you just love to have some beautiful
poinsettias for this Christmas Season? The St. John
the Baptist seventh and eighth graders are selling
poinsettias to help reduce the cost of their eighth grade
trips. These poinsettias are from Northgate
Greenhouse and are beautifully foil wrapped. They
come in red, pink, and white. The poinsettias come in
two sizes. A 4.5” pot sells for $7.00 and a 6.5” pot
sells for $12.50. If interested, please contact your
nearest and dearest seventh or eighth grader to place
your order. Order forms are available in the Gathering

MUSICIAN’S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE
T his weekend we find ourselves at the end
of another liturgical year as we celebrate
the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ
the King. Next Sunday we will begin a
new liturgical year on the First Sunday of Advent.
Today we sing hymns very commonly associated
with this feast day – “Crown Him With Many
Crowns” and “To Jesus Christ Our Sovereign King”.
I would just like to give a little background to both of
those hymns. This history comes from books which
give histories to many of our most beloved hymns.
“Crown Him With Many Crowns” was written in its
original form by Matthew Bridges and consisted of
six stanzas (verses). He thought of his hymn as a
sermon in song, based upon Revelation 19. “…and
on His head were many crowns.” I have written in
the past about the difference between the title of the
hymn and the “hymn tune”. Interestingly enough, the
title of this “hymn tune” is DIADEMATA.
Translated, this means the adorning with a crown or
wearing a crown. Mr. Bridges called his hymn “The
Song of the Seraphs.” He once wrote a book
condemning Roman Catholics, but ended up
converting to Catholicism in 1848.
In 1874, Geoffrey Thring, an Anglican clergyman
feared that some of Bridges’ verses invoked too
much Catholic doctrine. So, he wrote six new verses
for the same song. “Crown Him” therefore became a
six-verse hymn that was written twice. Over the
years, these twelve verses have become intermingled
in different hymnals, with editors mixing and
matching the verses. In fact, in our Gather hymnal,
we have verses 1 and 3-5 by Bridges and verse 2 by
Thring. In fact the five verse hymn that we find in
our Gather hymnal is the
most commonly used setting.
In each of the hardbound
hymnals by the three major
publishers, this five verse
version seems to have
become the standard. Who
would have known that there
are an additional seven
verses to this hymn?
“To Jesus Christ, Our
Sovereign King” has a lesser known background, but
from what I can tell and have found from several
sources scouring the internet, this text was written by
Martin Hellriegel. According to several sources I
have found, this hymn text was written by in 1941
Fr. Hellriegel, a German-American pastor in St.
Louis, as a direct response to the pretensions of the
Third Reich and to remind people who actually
reigns eternally.
As an article I recently read, Americans have
always believed that God is in charge. In fact, our
founding fathers wrote “We hold these truths to be
self evident, that all men are created equal, that they
are endowed by their Creator with certain
unalienable rights, that among these are Life,
Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Nothing could be further from the ideas that
fueled the Third Reich, and Father Hellriegel in this
great hymn conveys this majestic conception of God
and of humanity under God:
To Jesus Christ, Our Sovereign King,
who is the world’s salvation,
All praise and homage do we bring,
and thanks and adoration.
Christ Jesus Victor! Christ Jesus Ruler!
Christ Jesus Lord and Redeemer.
I hope this background on both of these hymns
helps us to better understand the texts of these two
wonderful hymns and reminds us each time we sing
them who truly is the One who rules our lives.

to LOVE as
GOD LOVES

I recently read a book about making one
simple change in your life every week for a year. It
doesn’t have to be a big change - in fact, something as
simple as drinking a glass of water right when you
wake up is one of the author’s suggestions. Fifty two
weeks pass. Fifty two changes happen. Each of those
tiny changes were transformative.
Every year we experience change due to both
our own choices and circumstances beyond our
control. Every year God calls all of us to be more
generous, gentle, selfless, compassionate, kind and
loving. Every year we have the opportunity to choose
to become who God is calling us to be.
It is so easy to become so overwhelmed by the
big picture. God’s vision of what he is calling us to be
is magnificent and perfect. Paradoxically, the very
splendor of our call to be Children of God can cause
us to become discouraged. We look at ourselves and
our neighbors and have trouble seeing God’s presence
and perfecting love.
Do not despair in your imperfection. This last
Sunday of the church year we celebrate the Feast of
Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. We as
the Church remember that Christ is our strength, our
leader, and our guide. We remember that though God
calls us to a holiness impossible for us to achieve on
our own, he - the King of the Universe - is attentive to
our needs. This is a feast of joy! The King of the
Universe is with us every day, particularly through the
Word and the Eucharist, guiding and strengthening us.
This coming year, beginning with Advent, how
can we grow into the Children of God our King wants
us to be? What one change is God asking you to make
this week?
Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, give us the
wisdom to see how you wish for us to grow this
year. Thank you for giving us the strength to ask
for your help and for providing for all our needs,
even when we forget to ask. Amen.

National Night of Prayer
Tuesday, December 8th, 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Our Lady of
the Holy Spirit Center, in partnership with Cincinnati
Right to Life and 40 Days for Life, will
commemorate the 26th annual National Night of
Prayer for Life—united prayer for the world’s
consecration to Christ and the end of abortion. The
hours of prayer coincide with the Feast of the
Immaculate Conception; Our Lady of Guadalupe’s
appearance to Juan Diego; plus the beginning of Pope
Francis’ declared Year of Mercy. All are welcome to
participate in Eucharistic Adoration and all or part of
the guided prayers and devotions in the Sorrowful
Mother Chapel of the Center; come and go as

NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER
Pastoral Council and the Commissions met on Monday,
November 9. As in the past, we all had very busy agendas as
we devote our efforts towards the betterment of our parish
and parish community.
Dale Bosse and Gene Cullman gave a very insightful
presentation to council regarding the Joseph’s Group which
is a group of men who donate a great deal of time and effort
to help maintain and improve the parish and school facilities.
Dale shared the group came together in July of 1991 and
since that time they have donated 13, 649 hours of free labor
to the parish and have tackled 2294 individual projects. Over the years they have repaired leaking roofs, built the Blessed
Virgin grotto, assist with festival set up and take down each
year, repair carpet, built storage areas and storage shelving
just to name a few. In addition to the free labor these men
frequently find ways to get needed supplies and materials
donated or at a very low cost. We extend hearty
compliments to this current group of dedicated men and to
those men who have been called to their home with Our
Lord. You are a tremendous asset to our parish. As is the
case with all of our parish ministries, the Joseph’s Group is
in need of more help and some younger men and women to
continue on when some can no longer do so. If interested

Fr. Tim shared that this year’s October count of the
number of people attending weekend Masses at St. John the Baptist stands at an average of 886 people for the weekends
in October. This is up just a little from 2014 when the
average was 870. All parishioners are encouraged to attend
Mass each weekend and especially our school parents. Let
us all set the example for our young people.

High School Ministry
This past Sunday, some of our high school youth
gathered to begin a new High School ministry
program here called CHOSEN. It was a great night for
the youth to get to know one another better as well as
begin to pray and think about some difficult life
questions. Please continue to pray for our high school
youth as they begin this journey of drawing closer to
Christ and learning more about themselves. We will
meet again this Sunday, Nov. 22 at 7pm in the Youth
Ministry room.
Young Adult Ministry
This past Tuesday, our young adults gathered for an
night of Gospel reflection, awesome conversation, and
fellowship afterwards. If you are interested in joining
our Young Adult Group here at St. John’s, please
contact Rod Dunlap at [email protected].
Fr. Tim was also pleased to announce that the One Faith,
One Hope, One Love Campaign has reached and exceeded the
parish goal of $950,000.00 as a result of some additional
pledges and as a result of one family’s increase of their
original pledge. This means that an approximate total of
$190,000.00 will be returned to our parish and will be used to
accomplish as many of our four initiatives as possible. Many
thanks are extended to all of our supportive parishioners and
also to the committee who worked very hard to achieve this
success.
We are coming up on the fourth anniversary of our parish’s
Strategic Plan this coming February. Over the past few months
council and the commissions have been looking at our
progress to date which is quite good. As a result and prior to
the conclusion of the plan in February, 2017, council has
asked the commissions to dig even deeper into just how they
can more fully implement the plan especially in light of our
new parish mission statement – “We Love God. We love
others. We make disciples.”
Council also reviewed a final draft of the parish’s Annual
Fund Drive (AFD) letter which is scheduled to go out on
November 15. I realize we are coming at you yet with anther
request for major dollars just as we have brought closure to
the Archdiocesan Campaign and with Christmas just around
the corner. We are asking you to search your heart and soul as
you ponder this AFD request. The parish is very much in need
of the money as part of its annual operating budget. Without
the AFD funds we will most surely operate in the red for the
2015/2016 fiscal year. All we ask is that each parishioner
gives this some very serious thought and to contribute what
you can. If “too much is too much”, we understand; however,
please, please be as generous as you can. May Our Lord bless
you abundantly for whatever you can contribute.
This month permit me to highlight the Faith Formation
Commission which meets the second Monday of each month
(September-June) at 7:00PM. This commission provides
events, programs and resources which foster and nurture the
faith life of parishioners of all ages. The commission sponsors
The Early Childhood Program, Sunday Religious Ed Program,
The Summer Religious Education Program, Vacation Bible
School and the parish’s Lending Library. Many, many thanks
to all the commission members who give of their time and
talent on the commission and to all who help make these five
programs a huge success. Again, I have to say a few people
cannot do all this by themselves. We need more people to
help. If you are interested in serving on this commission
please call Betty Dirr at 385-3954 or call the parish office at
385-8010.
In closing it is with a bitter sweet feeling that I share that
Fr. Tim announced to the council and commissions that he has
set his retirement date as July 1, 2018. We will be sad to see
him retire and leave our parish but we are happy that he will
be able to enjoy many years of rest and retirement. You have
led us well and have helped each of us grow in so many ways.
May Our Lord bless you with many more years of health and
happiness.

PASTORAL AREA FOOD PANTRY CHRISTMAS PROJECT
Our three pastoral area parishes (Corpus Christi, St. John Neumann, and St. John the Baptist) will be participating
in the Food Pantry Christmas gift and dinner give away again this year. We have 282 families signed up to
receive Christmas assistance via a dinner or dinner and gifts for their children.
For any parishioner who did not receive a gift tag for families requesting Christmas assistance, additional tags
will be put out the weekend of November 28 and 29. Many families have signed up for Christmas gifts for their
children 17 years of age and younger. We asked the parents to provide a gift suggestion in the $20 range for their
children. The items on the gift tags are just “suggestions”. Please use your judgment when purchasing gifts.
We want to share some procedures about the gift program that would assist us in managing this Program.
Family Dinners
If you choose a gift tag to provide a dinner for a family, please provide the entire meal for the number of people
listed on the gift tag. This can be done in one of 3 ways:
1. Provide meat and food items
2. Provide food items and a gift card for meat
3. Provide a gift card to a grocery store for the entire dinner
Dinners should be packed in a container, box, basket, etc. Examples will be on display in the Gathering Space.
Grocery store gift cards for meat should be sealed in an envelope, Christmas card, etc. and placed inside the
container, box, basket, etc. If you have anything perishable in the dinner you are providing please notify us when
returning your dinner. The family gift tag you choose should be taped securely to the outside of the dinner
container.
If giving a grocery gift card for the entire dinner, put the gift card in a Christmas card or envelope and secure the

We prefer that restaurant gift cards not be given to families since many of our clients do not have their own
transportation. They would be unable to get to a restaurant and many restaurants are closed on Christmas day.
Children’s Gifts
All gifts must be wrapped with the gift tag you picked up at church affixed securely and should be visible on the
package. Do not put the gift tag you chose inside boxes, bags, envelopes, etc.
Put store gift receipt inside gift or taped securely to outside of gift in an envelope. If you purchase a toy, please
put the gift receipt in an envelope secured to the package for the parent.
Return Date
It is very important that all gifts and dinners be wrapped and returned at Masses the
weekend of December 5 and 6.
