As some of you may already be aware, Cardinal Tobin and the Archdiocesan administration has published a plan for gradual church reopening, and has given permission for phase 1 to begin this Sunday, May 17th, at the discretion of the local pastor and leadership team. Phase 1 allows for the reopening of churches for private prayer on an extremely limited basis, once the required protocols are in place to do so. The second part of phase 1 gradually introduces access to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, again in a way that is at the same time safe for both priest and penitent and provides sufficient safeguards for privacy. More information will be announced soon.

Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

As has been announced, Cardinal Tobin has recently given permission to begin to reopen churches in a three-phased process which has steps for safety for both priests and people in each phase. We will begin today by opening the church daily between 12noon and 3pm for private prayer and adoration. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed prior to opening on the main altar, and will be reposed shortly after the church is closed at 3pm. We ask everyone to honor this three–hour time limit, to use the hand sanitizer at the entryways to the church, to wear a mask for the whole time inside, and to keep the 6-foot social distancing between yourself and others present while observing the guide marker limits inside. Only the two doors near the parking lot will be open for now.

I am so grateful to all those who support the parish through returning collection envelopes or using our electronic platforms, as well as the overwhelming generosity to our food pantry, which continues to serve clients as more will surely be coming forward. As you can see from the collection figures below, there is a substantial shortfall between what came in on Palm Sunday weekend this year compared to what a typical Palm Sunday like last year might bring in. Fortunately, the parish and school received a Small Business Administration Payroll Protection Loan to fund typical salaries over a two month period which will become a grant according to the terms of the legislation which provides this assistance.

Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings.

The head nurse had called Mary Beth in desperation. “The patient in 207 can’t talk because of her throat cancer surgery. She is so agitated by her daughters that I’m concerned about her recovery. They fight over everything from what treatment she should receive to where she should go when we release her from the hospital. Help!” Mary Beth had done pastoral care in the hospital long enough to have gotten a reputation with the nursing staff for her healing presence. She was only in the room ten minutes before the patient was calm and smiling, and the sisters had agreed to sit down with a social worker to discuss their options.

In today’s first reading we see the Holy Spirit at work in Philip, Peter, and John. They are living proof that Jesus’ healing presence lives in them. With words, prayer, and touch they communicate the Spirit that unites the crowds, heals the sick, and brings the Samaritans to life in the Spirit. Looking back at previous Easter readings from the Acts of the Apostles, we can see that now all the believers in the ancient world are united in the Spirit—Jews in Jerusalem, Hellenist Greek-speaking Jews, Gentiles, and now Samaritans. They are cured of their divisions and united in harmony through the healing presence of the Holy Spirit. Alleluia!

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God’s will, than for doing evil.” 1 PETER 3:17

The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning and making sure things are progressing smoothly. Then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended or an unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively and ask, “Why me? I did everything right!” Here’s the thing – adversity humbles us and reminds us of our dependence on God and not on our own self-reliance. Rest assured, God has a better plan in store for you.
