CATHOLIC BURIAL
More and more people are considering or, indeed,
have turned to cremation as an affordable, practical
and efficient way to deal with the burial of loved ones.
However, this alternative is not without its problems in
the consciousness of many Catholics. Many have some
vague awareness of the Church’s disapproval of this
practice for some equally vague reason.
Without giving an exhaustive explanation of every di-
mension of this issue, I think it might be helpful for me
to outline some of the basics as follows:
1. Through her funeral rituals, the Church does
express a preference for “full body” funeral
rites, and burial. Why? Because she be-
lieves that the human body is to be an ob-
ject of reverence since it is a “temple of the
Holy Spirit,” (1 Cor. 6:19). And, it is in our
bodies that we are to rise from our graves
on “the last day.”
2. It is true that, in the past, the Church prohib-
ited her members from cremation. Accord-
ing to an online article from American Cath-
olic, “from early Christian days cremation
was viewed as a pagan practice and a denial
of the doctrine of the Resurrection. That's
why cremation was expressly forbidden by
the Catholic Church until recent years.”
Slightly more recent history also saw the
rise of the Masonic movement in Europe
which encompassed a belief system which
encouraged cremation explicitly as a denial
of the immortality of the body. Hence, in
the middle of the 19th century, church law
was crafted to expressly forbid the practice
to Catholics.
3. Now, however ---since 1963 in fact---the
church has lifted the outright prohibition
against cremation. Initially, this choice re-
quired one to settle for a memorial Mass
instead of a funeral Mass for the deceased.
However, since 1997, the ritual of the
Church was updated to allow for funerals
with the presence of the cremated remains
of the deceased. Mind you, this is still not
the preferred way, but it is allowed.
4. As for burial . . . The Church still requires a
level of reverence and respect for the re-
mains of the deceased whether in the form
of a body, or ashes. The scattering of ashes
to the wind or in the ocean is not regarded
by the Church as appropriate since it carries
connotations other than that of the Resur-
rection of the Body, which is central to our
faith. Whether consciously intended or
not, the scattering of ashes suggests the ir-
relevance of the body to eternal life and/or
the final disposition of the body as some
form of earth-bound reality, (part of the
ocean, earth, plants, or other).
