A WORD ABOUT HALLOWEEN At this time of year many Christian parents wonder if they should allow their children to take part in Halloween activities. The Christian history of Halloween (All Hallows’ Eve) ties it to All Saints Day (the following day). It is a part of a celebration of Christ’s victory over sin, death, and the devil. Far from acknowledging Satan’s power or “worshiping the devil,” Halloween actually is a way of making fun of the devil and celebrating the truth that Christ has been victorious and evil has been defeated. Let your kids know this. Martin Luther once said, “The children of God enjoy playing with devils because they know they are perfectly safe.” So use Halloween for fun; put on the masks, walk with the little ones, and have a good time.

EVENING SERVICE

Congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Roman Catholic Church will

join in the --

31st Annual celebration

of their common heritage in an

All Saints’ Day Worship Sunday, November 1, 2015 7:00 pm

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church --- Garnavillo

A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the service.

Thankofferings: Our History -- Beginning in the late 19th

century, Lutheran women were given small Thankoffering

boxes to place in a special location in their homes as a visible

reminder of blessings received. Women would add coins to

those boxes almost daily as particular blessings were noted.

From their use came the idea of an ANNUAL CHURCH

SERVICE to celebrate their collection, and so the women of

the congregation would come together for a Thankoffering service. The concept of Thankoffering

celebrations dates back more than 100 years and beyond Lutherans. In the Lutheran tradition, the

General Synod’s Women’s Home and Foreign Missionary Society created their first Thankoffering

service in 1889 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the organization. At that first Thankoffering,

$6,100 was collected. Today, Women of the ELCA collects more than $1 million in Thankofferings

annually for the ministries and mission of our women’s organization.

THANKOFFERINGS: continuing the tradition Thankofferings show gratitude for God’s blessings

and give us an important and tangible way to express that gratitude. It is a tradition grounded in

our celebration of community, of meeting together to joyfully give thanks for what God has given us.

Thankofferings have always been, and still are, our opportunity to say thank you to God in both

significant and ordinary moments. Giving Thankofferings is grounded in scripture and in our

constitution. “All income, whether received by the unit, cluster or conference, synodical or church-

wide organizations, shall be viewed as being given to the total program of Women of the ELCA.

BRING YOUR ENVELOPES SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22ND –

this includes all members of the congregation – a great way to support the Women of the E.L.C.A.

NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR HAROLD MCMILLIN

Dear Friends in Christ:

The question for today is: How Long?

The ladies of the church studied Psalm 113 in their “Gather” magazine for October. In this study we talked about how personal enemies, whether that be illness, attackers, mouthy neighbors, rumors, whatever that persist over a period of time. We ask God sometimes –

HOW LONG will this last?

Well, on Tuesday on my way home I had a call from Linda saying: “We are under attack. We are being invaded.” She then in the same breath said I had to stop at Fisk’s in order to get their bug treatment. So I stopped and picked up a package of treatment to get rid of those pesky little critters.

It is good to treat those little pests called Mexican Bean Beetles. I got home and they were clinging to the house by the thousands.

They are the little pests that leave left over undigested food trails on the siding of your house, they land all over you when you are outside, and they can bite pretty hard if they are of the mind to. Some say - leave them alone and once it gets cold they will disappear, - but they reappear when the sun of winter warms them up, only then it is on the inside of your home. They seem to pile up in the light globes, the slide tracks of doors, along the walls in garages and around the house.

It seems to get a lot worse once the bean harvest is started or done. When I got home it looked like a miniature locust infestation flying through the air.

Where are the birds to feed on them when you want them? I don’t think they even like to eat them. Must be the after-taste.

Anyway, we ask – HOW LONG must we endure this infestation of little pests?

It seems like they can stick around and get under your skin for quite a while. They will get you out of your comfortable chair to pick them up, catch them in a Kleenex and throw them away, vacuum them, clean after them, or just chase them out of the house. If you catch them with a Kleenex, you can’t just throw them in the garbage, you have to flush them down the stool or they will reappear. When you vacuum them you have to release them outside or they will crawl out the hose again, and they stink when left inside the vacuum. Or as one brave lady said she plugged the end of the hose, except you dare not forget to remove it before you start the vacuum up or the hose will be plugged. All kinds of complications from such a small creature.

Due to the inventiveness of man I did spray for them and now have none flying or crawling on the premises, but thou-sands to clean up with broom, vacuum, blower, and some to clean out of the light bowl.

I think I will have few to deal with for another year. I can finally say with the Psalmist: “I feel like celebrating, because you rescued me.” One thing our Psalmists and many other witnesses in scripture can do, when they are faced with in-flictions that last for a long time,

REJOICE and PRAISE GOD. May you find the same expression in your challenges. May God forever be seen as good in your life and may you sing about His work in your life.

Looking for ways to Praise the Lord,

Pastor Harold

NOVEMBER

National Adoption Month

November is National Adoption Month, and LSI is a proud partner of Iowa Kids Net, the statewide collaboration of agencies that helps Iowans become foster or adoptive

parents for children in Iowa’s foster care system. Nationally, there are over 101,000 youth waiting to be adopted from foster care, and thousands of teens age out of foster care every year without a permanent family. We know there are no unwanted children, only unfound families! To learn how you or someone you know can make a difference, visit www.IowaKidsNet.com. LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

Keeping Up With Brookie Brookie loves to talk, and she makes friends everywhere she goes. It’s quite likely she would be delighted to be your friend, too. But you’ll have to keep up with her first. Brookie has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. She lives at Harmony Place, a Muscatine house specially designed for “medically fragile” individuals. The home, built in 2008 by the Muscatine Welfare Association through public and private funding, has 24-7 staffing provided by LSI. The house is innovative, with a track system that makes it easy for its five residents to move from one room to another. And all five of their wheelchairs easily fit together in the Harmony Place bus. It gives Brookie a home base from which she can go anywhere. And she is always on the go. “I try to do as much as I can,” she said. “I work at Wal-Mart, I do sled hockey, I play softball in Davenport. I go to concerts.” There’s also bowling league, swimming, singing group, regular trips to see friends and family and fun times at Camp Courageous in Monticello. Plus, she spends a few days in Ames every year chasing down the competition in the Spe-cial Olympics wheelchair races. (She won gold in the 100m this year!) “Since I’ve been here, I’ve come a long way,” said Brookie. “I’m more independent now. I’m able to do a lot more. I see a friend whenever it fits in the schedule. I see my family whenever I want. LSI makes really good accommodations.” Some group homes have limits on how many vehicle miles a resident can use each month. Harmony Place does not. Instead, it places special importance on community integration and spending time with loved ones. LSI also helps support her in her goals, such as cooking, exercise and community involvement. “Many parents cannot provide caregiving,” said Lisa, an LSI staff. “Sometimes their home is not equipped or they are older. Harmony Place helps improve quality of life for people.” And for Brookie, that life is lived to the very fullest. Catch her if you can.

WELCA News Donations are needed for fall church cleaning. Checks can be made to St. John WELCA and given to Sharon Henning, WELCA treasurer, or placed in the offering plate. Thank you.

Thank you to Clark and Kris Wikner and to John Kluth who are Thrivent members for sharing their Community Impact Card to purchase the food and for the advertising of our Harvest Meal this year. Thank you to Thrivent for making this possible.

Throughout history, November was a relaxing month because the crops had been harvested and the cold had not yet set in strong. November is a time of the year that provides you a few weeks of rest before the rush of the holiday season, which begins with Thanksgiving at the end of the month.
